north berkeley stray dog warning

hey folks if any of you see this black medium sized lab sorta looking dog with the leather stud collar- keep back. i saw it a few days ago, then again last night. It is wiley and has obviously been on its own awhile.

the reason i felt i should post is after last night i called the cops- of course they took 20 min to show up with 3 cars, right after dog split. now i hate to do this, send some dog to its likely death and stuff- really, it really sucks. BUT- ok the dog almost lets people approach it and usually runs, usually. Last night, it was digging through a bunch of trash it had knocked over. I was watching it from a good 30 feet away for a bit, it stopped eating, watched me. After about two minutes it full on charged me and kept barking until i was way farther away.

All that needs to happen is some animal loving person to think they can offer it some food, or try to catch it and it is going to bite them bad.
because it has a collar it appears like somebody's dog you would like to help return, but it is not, not anymore. Just if you see it alert animal control and stay back, don't get bit.

pretty amazing to watch it though.
very sneaky, careful animal. After i got far enough away and it went back to eating garbage, it would watch up and down the street, hide in the bushes when people walked by, then pop back out for more trash.

Thanks for the heads up, Thorn. As someone who almost had her kneecap ripped off by a German Shepard at age five (lucky to be alive, really), stray dogs make me nervous enough as it is. I will definitely steer clear of this one if seen.

Yeah, I got bit by one when I was four or five too. I remember the impression it made in my side with its incisors, although if it had meant to maul me, it would have...in my case, I think it was warning me that it was dominant and I was in it's territory...and, fortunately, the adult owners were nearby and intervened too. It taught me a healthy respect for dogs...and not to eye strange dogs' food bowls too intensely while they are eating.

Hmm...I wouldn't call the dog wiley, I'd say that it wasn't certain as to why you were eyeing it for so long...

Look, if you behave like you might be considering it or its trash as a meal, it's going to assert itself. Had you just walked on by and not taken notice of it, it might have left you alone. Of course, that doesn't mean that isn't a danger to people, especially smaller people and kids...so you certainly did the right thing in calling the cops.
