"3 Black Panthers and the Last Slave Plantation".
3 Black Panthers and the Last Slave Plantation: tells the gripping story of three men, all former members of the Black Panther Party known collectively as the Angola 3. We explore these men's lives caught up in extraordinary circumstances while incarcerated in one of the "most brutal and racist prisons in the United States", the Angola Prison in Louisiana.
Award winning journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal narrates from Pennsylvania's death row taking the viewer through the history of Angola Prison as it was transformed from Civil War slave plantations to a hard labor prison.
The Angola 3: “politicized” through contact with members of the Black Panthers while inside prison formed, one of the only prison chapters of the Black Panther Party in 1971. An astonishing feat given Angola's reputation for repression. Under these conditions these men organized prisoners to build a movement within the walls for justice, dignity and human rights. Our film focuses on the questions that have surrounded and clouded their cases since the 70s.
In addition 3 Black Panthers and the Last Slave Plantation explores the political climate of the 60s -70s that produced “political” prisoners in America situating the Angola 3 within the political unrest of the Civil Rights and ‘Black Power’ movements that emerged within prison walls.
Detailing the “political disruption and neutralization” of the Black Panther Party by the F.B.I. Counter Intelligence Program COINTELPRO, the scene is set for the story of the Angola 3.
Their cases have gained international attention and interest over the last few years. Amnesty International and the parliaments of Belgium, Portugal,Indonesia as well as South Africa have recognized their solitary confinement as “cruel and unusual punishment” and their status as “political prisoners” within the U.S. They have a pending civil suit Wilkerson, Wallace and Woodfox vs. the State of Louisiana which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled has merit to proceed to trial. The outcome of this landmark civil case could eliminate long term solitary confinement in the U.S.
A documentary film about the "Angola 3" .
32 years of solitary confinement, 32 years of
