The acai berry contains the highest orac value known to man. This is a great juice to drink alone, or to add to a smoothy, your frsh juice (ii even add it to greek yougurt). Its so potent you don't need to drink a lot.

I just got into this a few months ago. Acai berries give me immediate energy. What's orac value? I've been buying this in puree form, it's a bit thick, I eat it alone. Amazing little fruit.

ORAC = oxygen radical absorbancy capacity is one of three measures, the others being NORAC and HORAC, used to determine the antioxidant capacity of a particular food. Acai berry has recently been demonstrated to exhibit high antioxidant capacity, possibly the highest of any known fruit. It has been relatively unknown until recently and now many genuine and faux-nutritional companies are climbing on the band wagon. Many products are adulterated with all sorts of fillers and extenders and sold as the true thing.

all the acai i find in the freezer section of the healthfood stores is pasteurized. wish i could find some that isn't. not happy about the heat from a raw food perspective.

I've been using a frozen blend by Sambazon, but it does contain some cane juice and I just looked, it is "flash pasteurized" per the label. I don't know if that's one of those less is better things or if dead is dead as far as pasteurization?

from what I understand the acai berry, after it's been harvested, is very perishable. I would seek out freeze dried rather than pasteurized. From what I understand Monavie and Amazon Thunder use this process. I've yet to find a scientific paper on the effects of heat on ORAC value.

If one considers how the structure of food molecules changes when heated, I'd think that a fragile whole food like acai would also undergo some kind of change - if this diminishes its potency, I don't know.
