For more than 100 years cranberries have been known to be useful for urinary tract infections. For the American Pioneers discovering a bog of cranberries was reason to rejoice. The berries could be dried and being high in vitamin C could prevent scurvy in the winter, and they were used as a diuretic. As far back as the middle of the 1800's German doctors noted the value of the cranberry for urinary tract infections.
Cranberry has been shown experimentally to increase acidity of urine. Cranberries not only acidify urine, but also have a chemical polymer that interferes with the ability of bacteria to stick to the lining of the urinary tract. The bacteria losing their footing are flushed out in the urine before they can set up house and cause an infection. Another study in 1994 confirmed the value of cranberry in reducing bacteria and infection in an elderly population. In yet another study cranberry was stronger in preventing a urinary tract infection than curing one.

Re: Kidney support
Sat, November 17, 2007 - 10:11 PMI don't know exactly the answer to your question, as i don't know your history or what else is happening in your body, but did a course in traditional chinese medicine and recommend seeing someone who knows about the 5 elements and helping to balance organs and chi in the body.
kidney is connected to the emotion for fear...it is also the water element. you can maybe google TCM and kidney and see what you come up with. in the juicing book, there are suggestions for kidney, but i don't recall what it was exactly...so go to this link
www.juicingbook.com/search/search.cgi
you could also go to the library and look up books on juicing to help tonify or strengthen the kidney in the index. since there is so much info, i would just find a chinese doctor that does accupuncture and prescribes chinese herbs to take on your case. try it for a little while and make up your own mind. also, consider doing a kidney flush, there are a number of recipes on line (hulda clark) or some people have a program you can follow (dr. schultz)...but if you're worried about taking matters into your own hands, you will want to consult a physician before doing anything that could be too much a shock on the body.
-----------------------------------
here are some tidbits i found on the internet...
---------------------------
Kidney Stones and Other Kidney Related Problems:
If you suffer from kidney stones, then you will definitely want to avoid juices made from vegetables such as spinach, beets, collard greens and some other vegetables. These vegetables are higher in oxalic acid.
If you do suffer from kidney stones or other kidney related problems, then consult your medical doctor or naturopathic doctor before juicing.
--------------------------------
Although lycium fruit (is this Lychee (dragon eyeballs)?) was described in the Shennong Bencao Jing (ca 100 A.D.), its use in traditional formulas was rather limited until the end of the Ming Dynasty period (1368–1644). At that time, it was frequently combined with tonic herbs such as rehmannia, cornus, cuscuta, and deer antler to nourish the “kidney” (as described in Chinese medicine) for the treatment of a variety of deficiency syndromes.
-----------------------------------
Watermelon juice, for instance, is traditionally used for bladder and kidney problems...
------------------------------------
• When a person is constitutionally yin deficient, overwork, prolonged stress or illness, excessive sexual activity and pregnancy can consume the essence. The result is deficiency of Kidney yin which can in turn lead to blazing of Kidney fire. 'Kidney fire' is characterized by frequent, copious urination, cloudy urine (as if containing grease), progressive weight loss, dizziness, blurred vision, sore back, ulceration or itching of the skin, and vaginal itching. The tongue is red with scanty or no coating and the pulse is fine and rapid.
All three patho-mechanisms involve the mutual exacerbation of yin deficiency and dry heat scorching Kidney yin essence and the fluids of the Lung and Stomach. Yin deficiency is primarily associated with the Kidneys, and according to the principle that detriment to yin affects yang, Kidney yang deficiency is also invariably observed in prolonged cases. Therefore xiao-ke syndrome may also occur when there is deficiency of Kidney yang.

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 10:59 AMthanks everyone for your posts. I have been told that anything red is really of great support for the kidneys, watermelon, cherries, cranberries, beets... watermelon balances the electrolytes in the body. got to be careful with this one though because it is possible to to cramp, need to add potassium when this happens.
Burdock root.. hmmm wonder how that is raw and juiced? Anyone ever try it juiced before? -
