    Hi-

I have heard of both, but always thought they were the same thing, just different abbreviations for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.

Any research I have done (granted, not too much) always seemed to lump them together.

I have had TMJ almost my whole life. Whether it was something I was born with, or was the result of an injury I sustained at the age of 5, I guess I'll never really know, but it certainly has not been fun living with it. Of late I was disagnosed with Fibromyalgia, (completely different ailment, though many sufferers of FMS have TMJ) and was able to get some physical therapy, which included my jaw as well as my neck, shoulders, etc. It was a tremendous help. The therapist also showed me some trigger points inside the mouth to help the muscles relax and the jaw to release when it locks up. What a life saver!

How long have you had TMD, and what have you done for treatments?

thats just it.. i haven't been diagnosed with anything.. for the last ten weeks i have had a string of ailments.. first got sick from some mold & my ears "closed up" the ear thing happens whenever my emmune system gets weak, i usually can get rid of it by getting lymrpth massage a trip to the acupunturist and chiropracter..

it wouldn't go away this time and was accompained by tooth pain... so then i went to a dentist.... he replaced an old filling.. but said my teeth were not the cause of all the pain...
then my jaw/teeth starting hurting REALLY bad over the last week or so... i've been popping aleve like there's no tomorrow...
i called my chiropractor yesterday... he said it is some type of TMJ and adjusted my jaw...
which helped.... but the pain is back today... i just popped 2 more aleve...
      THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmmm...that is really odd. Sounds like a trip to a doctor will probably be needed, unless the dentist examined your jaw? I don't really think TMJ/TMD is the sort of thing that generally pops out of nowhere, unless you have suddenly started grinding or clenching your teeth. (If you clench while sleeping, you can usually tell by running your tongue along the insides of your cheeks, if so, you will usually feel a line along the inside, roughly where your teeth would come together.)

I have a severe joint malformation on one side, there is lots of popping and cracking, sometimes the joint locks and I cannot open my mouth, I have migraines, have difficulty eating hard or chewy foods, etc. I can easily say though it has never involved my teeth at all - no pain there.

Everyone of course is different, I really think your best bet would be to see someone who could examine the jaw & related muscles surrounding that area, perhaps even a Primary Care Physician to start. I think you should pester your dentist a bit more, too.

Chiropractic adjustments have never worked for me, I would always feel great for the first ten minutes, and then everything went back to the way it was. I think it is because with my Fibromyalgia, all the muslces are affected, so it just keeps putting pressure on my jaw/joint.

I hope you feel better soon!

my primary care physician told me he couldnt/wouldnt help and to see my dentist. since my "dentist" is our clinic here at the university, i managed instead to just get a referral upstairs to a real dentist and also the head of orthodontics, who told me i definitely had a form of TMJ (after ordering xrays and listening to my symptoms). They then referred me to an oral surgeon who put me on a regimen of Aleve which caused me all types of problems, but solved (at least temporarily) the pain I was having. I tried unsuccessfully for 6 months with his office to schedule the surgery he said I needed, but they never returned my calls.

Since then, the problem seemed to have rectified itself. I've had only minor pain once every few months (no more migraines, popping, etc), and I've decided, since that surgeon is the ONLY tmj surgeon covered by my insurance, I will live with managing the problem until (hopefully) he retires. Or I get better insurance.

I have had migraine like pain in the past, to the point of my not being able to function and vomiting from the pain levels. I had the popping which seemed like it was pushing in and out of joint. Thankfully, it seems the pads between my upper and lower jaw must have floated back into the proper place.

Neither my dental nor my health insurance will cover anything to do with my TMJ. I did manage to get an X-ray taken a few months back, which was completely worthless.

I find that I can have months where it doesn't bother me at all, for no reason I can really put my finger on. Since I have started my Fibromyalgia treatments, it has been much better. Part of that is treating a sleep disorder, and I think when I sleep better, I grind my teeth less, hence my jaw bothers me less.

              i am a HUGE freak about Dr.s....

so any kind of alternative stuff is worth trying for me... the bit of research i found says that TMD comes and goes.. and it is the only thing that has mentioned the facial pain, ear stuffiness, tooth pain... that have been plagueing me...
luckily i love my chiropractor and he is determinted to get ot the bottom of the problem..

thanks for the info... i have VERY quickly learned to be aware of how much i clench my jaw....and trying to relax it...

My concern was that it seemed like perhaps your dentist was a bit disinterested in your situation, and it really sounded like you were suffering. It's good that you have a decent chiropractor. I hope that you can get some relief.

I posted the name of a book here in the TMJ tribe, you might want to check it out, I found it very helpful.

This is one of those ailments that seems to manifest differently in everyone. Keep seaking treatment until you find the right one for you. Feel better soon!

yes you are correct... it was a new to me dentist and according to the info i found online... the fact that i had tooth pain that could not be accounted for AND the stuffy ear thing should have clued him in.
instead he ripped out a filling, put a new one in and charged me $300.00...
OH and mis aligned my jaw by cranking it open.... which has caused unbearable pain..

my chiropractor said in order for him to "try" to fix it it would take seeing him 3 times a week for several months... which he felt was forsure NOT a good solution... BUT by giving me a jaw adjustment today.. the pain is mostly gone...

i have found someone local who is a DDS, accupunterist, natuapath & more...
                  AND RETURNS HIS OWN CALLS!!!!!
so i have made an appointment with him... he said to get a jaw x-ray before i see him...

thank you tons for chatting with me... i will take all the info i can get...

Bad Dentist! Actually, going to the Dentist always kills my jaw, I always have to ask them to stop now and again, just to take a break from having it wide open, I am usually sore for days after that...that dentist should have at least referred you to someone who could help!

However, this new DDS/Accupuncturist sounds like the way to go -- I hope it works out for you!

    Hi,

My life has been defined by the boundaries of TMJ -- insofar as TMD goes I have become aware that there are specific diseases of the Jaw joint that are not those (NOW) more understood as TMJ. If I can help you in any way, please let me know. I have spent 30+ years straining and stretching to live within the dictates of a never-ending nightmare. However, I did go through something in July -'05 that has become known as my epiphany breakthrough. The haunting barriers of a numbed (almost to death numbed) lifestyle grew to be something I could relegate to the past.
While I did spend over an hour trying to "breifly" explain what I could about this nonstop ride through a house of mirrors -- mirrors that only embelished my inner terror with an uncontrollable hysteria that always bordered the unending days, nights and hours of PAIN. I have known other processes of the body to go awry but none (not even a fall off a cliff, leaving me with broken back, ribs, contusions, intubated and on life-support (again) could come to the field of burials wherein I laid my hopes, dreams, and loves of my life -- all the refugees of this madness.
Anyway I couldn't get it to Post, so....
