Sometimes I just want to slap customers!

Customer: What is that? (pointing to a paralellogram shaped objet d'art.)
Me: Oh, it's a vase, but not for sale. There's a crack in the bottom.
Customer: Can I see it?
Me: Sure.
Customer: How much do you want for it?
Customer's sister: She said it wasn't for sale.
Me: Well, yeah, it's cracked.
Customer: I'd like to have it just for show and maybe dried flowers.
Me: Yeah, that would work. Hard to put a price on it though. I made another one. It was intricately carved and I sold it for $145.
Customer: (makes huge choking noise) BUT THIS ONE IS CRACKED!
Me: I'll sell it to you for half price.
Customer: I'll give you $20.
Me: No. I won't sell it for $20. It cost me more than $20 in clay to make this piece. And the glaze decoration was highly labour intensive.
Customer: I'll give you $30.
Me: No.
Customer: C'mon! Meet me halfway! I'll give you $35 but that's my final offer.

What I Really Wanted to Say:
How is selling a $145 piece to you for $30 dollars meeting halfway? In what world is halfway really 80% of ME meeting your wish price of $30?! GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY SHOP!!!

What really happened (God, I hate myself right now)
Me: Um....<thinks that getting $35 is better than smashing it and using it to fill potholes> ....sure you can have it for $35.
Customer: I don't have any money on me.
Me: (BLINK BLINK BLINK!!! Shakes head)
Customer: I'll come back on Saturday or Sunday.
Me: I'll put it aside for you. <Quickly thinks up evil plan of smashing it anyway and using it to fill potholes and then telling her that someone came in and offered me $80 for it so sold it to them because she didn't leave a deposit>

OTHER THINGS she said:
Customer: How much is that three bowl condiment dish?
Me: $45
Customer: That's ridiculous!
Me: Well, it's 3 bowls, squished together, with two handles. Normally I would charge more than $10 for each bowl, plus the handles....and the labour that goes into these is quite high. I have to trim the bowls while still rather squishy so I can mush them together.
Customer: Oh. It's still ridiculous.
Me: Well, it's art, not a dollar store item. <knowing full well that this customer used to own a dollar store>

Don't know if this is possible.

Got the idea from a friend who makes precious metal silver clay jewelry.

Wondering about making a thin slip of the PMC and brushing it onto a glazed ceramic piece.

Anyone ever try this?

Hi Everyone,
A friend who owns a RV Park with cabins and camping has given me one of her cabins to open a studio. It is in rural western New Mexico. I'm looking for two electric wheels, an electric kiln and a slab roller. If you know of anyone selling these items please contact me. I will bewgin giving classes in January.
I have a wood fired kiln and have fired it 13 times. Its getting easier.
Peace, Maqui

Hello!

I am going to be making a silicone battery powered light and i need your advice on how to go about doing that. So far I have a blue foam model, two slabs of sulpher free plasticine, and a tub of silicone. Is it possible to melt the plasticine, put it in a box/container, add the blue foam to make an imprint on one side, do the same to another side... put them together, with a hole on top, and pour in the silicone?

Can plasticine be used to make the negative mould? If so, do I have to contain it or can it stand alone? Any advice you could give me would be appreciated. And I'm on a very tight schedule so the sooner the better! Thank you very much!

Decided to remodel my bathroom, then decided to make most of the tile. This project has been going on the better part of a year and it has been really cool to see it go up these last two weeks. Its not quite done but I wanted to get some feed back. I made all the round tiles as well as all of the fused glass pieces used.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm planning on buying an L&L kiln and want to do the wiring as cheaply as possible... Am I insane in thinking this is something I can tackle? I know the house is wired for 50amps or 220v... but that's the extent of my knowledge. Barring all the possible good advice in doing this myself.. does anyone know a good electrician that will not charge me out of home and kiln?

Hey there folks!
I have a local gallery that wants to carry my sculptures and I have never been this route before. I need some help with pricing. The scupltures take me roughly 6+ hours of actual build time. I can factor in clay and supply price but after that i am kind of lost. Any help would be much appreciated! thanks!

Hey there folks! I am looking for some cone 6 glazes. I need something that is fairly easy to make as I don't want to have to store large amounts of chemicals. I make sculpture so I dig mattes, textures, and earth tones. I have TONS of recipies (from low-high fire) to share so if anyone is interested in a trade let me know.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good way to protect a floor from the water, etc that splashes about from the wheel sometimes. I'm in the process of setting up my studio at home (finally!) and would like to cover the area where my wheel would be.

Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks!

Hey there folks!
I want to make some tiles for the outside of my house. I am using a clay body that matures at cone 5 (which is what I will take it to) I am wondering about thickness. What is acceptable for outside. It will be only a small portion of wall so there's no foot traffic. Any other pit falls I should look out for? Also I want to make counter top tiles as well-any thoughts on thickness there?
Slight warping-is it ok or should I reconstitute those?

I live in San Diego...maybe someone here knows of a professional I could consult with?

Wondered if anyone has ever tried this.

I found this site --

http://www.sculptnouveau.com/coatings.html

I think it was pretty interesting - they sell liquid metal coatings for ceramic sculptures along with patinas (can be used with plaster or concrete as well).

I didn't know this was possible - It is apparently durable enough for outside use...

Hello beautiful potters & souls! I'm a young man on his journey in life. Definatly loving each and every second. I've been staying in Northern Cali living at a mineral springs resort and working there as well. I'm interested in massage therapy, pottery, alternative building, self-sustaining communities, tantra, inner alchemy, chi kung, tai chi, and just being a wandering saint hehe.
My job is running out this weekend and i'm waiting to feel the tug of the flow which way is next. I'm really being drawn to get back into pottery its something I love. I don't know how common it is to have an internship or apprenticeship who knows it may not every happen. But Infinate possibilities right???
I'm asking now for the flow of creation to hook me up with where I need to be next. I would love to work under someone who's likeminded, and and further my own evolution as well as their own. So if you have a place to stay, a position to offer, or wisdom to pass along please do.
I know whatever happening will be for my own good and that of the world, so we'll see.

Thanks for your time, remember

I need a copper red oxidation cone 10 glaze... anyone have any ideas? I have found several really nice reduction recipes, but I don't think they'll work in my electric kiln. I'm also looking for a nice royal blue type cone 10 glaze, anyone have a favorite recipe?

Thanks!

Thanks for putting up the pic of my sculpture. She's done in hi-fire B-mix with a terra-sigilatta finish, raku fired without any smoke reduction. She's about 14 inces from knee to the back of her neck, and sits on the display shelf with her sisters from the same series.

Again, thanks for putting her pic up.

Where and how does one find one? I've been looking around and even on Ebay and the cheapest I've found is for over $400. Can one find one for less than that? Even used, banged up, old... anything but expensive...

Hey Clay Fans, I have a huge amount of clay that was given to me by a friend. The thing is that all of it is dryed up into bricks. I heard that you can soak it and revive it, but when I asked someone at a local studio, they said it wasn't worth the effort, and I should just go ahead and dump it all, because clay is cheap anyway. What should I do, dump it, or try to rewet it? I've only worked with clay that's already nice and moist...straight from the store or the pug. Any advice would be appreciated....

the meaning of it all...

friends, artists, fellow potters,
sometimes, it all just flows. the creativity is there, it all seems to have a glorious purpose... i am doing what i love! something important! pursuing the too-uncommon dream of making-a-living-through-art...
but handmade pottery and ceramics, be they functional, decorative, religious, meditative, whatever, are no longer the necessity they used to be, here on america's western shore. i look at images and pieces from up to 100 years ago, read of women in modern-day indonesia or africa whose work with clay is a matter of necessity, but also one of artistry, and i cannot help but feel that contextually, my work lacks cultural importance.
how do i rectify it to myself, dayin dayout, that the market for my work is the rich, those with the money for what has become a novelty--the handmade. of course, i produce for my friends, my family, my self, my collective of starvin artists as it were; but there is no niche in which i can make my necessary contribution to the community, live through this, and be assured my place due to the necessity of my skills...
functional pottery is one thing, "art"(with a capital A as my uncle would say...) is yet another. at times, i am inspired by the western-art-tradition-gallery-untouchable thing. needless to say, at others i evade and avoid it and what it offers--an arena in which the creations of my hands can be valued by those in power, can receive accolades for their attractive worthlessness and bought for too much money....
so tell me, friends, why do we do what we do? yes, for the love of it. yes, for the beauty of the works. but how do we justify our works and their place in our wealthy wealthy american society.

i think i do what i do because i hope to transcend that which has been handed down to me, a tradition of pre-fab and few questions asked, few endeavors undertaken. i do it because i am afraid of skills being lost. i do it because without creation on their resume, my hands would be worthless. but everyday that i create, every load that i pull crackling from my kiln, i am still not sure of the meaning of it all...

why do you do what you do?
thanks for reading...
*s*

hs anyone worked with it? iI know there is plastialina which i always thought was the same thing but which has more sulphur in it than plastaline. Also is sculpture house the only supply place for it?

while it is a bother to make molds..plastaline molds so much easier and lends itself to very fine detail and of course never dries.

Does anyone know any good pottery studios/ classes in NYC?

I am not really looking for classes per se just dreaming about getting my hands dirty again.

I think there is a place on W19th? Are there any in Brooklyn?
Any advice would be great.

I want to make a ceramic cookie mold of my company icon. Has anyone done this or have suggestions about the claybody to use, etc...

Also, anyone ever made chocolate in a clay mold?

A bit esoteric, but thanks for your time...

Hi,
Being newto this.(I think everyone is new to this). I would like to invite you to my wood fire kiln group or even better to my home. I live in New Mexico. I am building a alternative pottery studio. I have built a sand-bag house and the studio is next. This last summer I hosted a 16 day wood kiln workshop and tadah it worked.one 11 on the first try. It took about a cord and a half. I am offering this kiln and my gas, and raku kiln for summer exploration. Campin is available. $20 a day for food. You pay for clay, gas, wood, and a little help with my next project.

Thanks, Maqui

art-is it theft or borrowing to use a stamp tool w/o permission?

Hi all, I am a member of a public studio. Today I looked at my neighbors shelf and was SHOCKED! She has taken a stamp of mine (which wasn't even fired!) and made a negative. She is now using that stamp to emboss a high volume of her pottery. I am sooo annoyed! I think she also damaged the tool.

This stamp is for my own original tiles, and I under no circumstances gave her permission. What recourse do I have? I feel so very violated at this I want her not to fire those pieces because she stole my art.

Am I over-reacting? I left her a note, politely said it looked like my sprial design and can she call me. I hope she does - but what do I say? I am concerned that I will not convey myself clearly. She should have asked, she had no right, she should destroy those works.

I know there are times when I and many other people say, oh whatever. I am so tired of doing that! I feel ripped when this happens knowing she will sell my art and I get nothing. I need other people's perspectives...anyone want to give opinion on how to handle this?

The worst part- It was such a simple spiral, and such an easy stamp - why did she have to do that? It makes it worse on me because it feels like it is about the ethics, and I have such concern I am over-reacting.

thanks,
Aryana

hi,

any advice on how to get started making handmade architectural tiles? something like a modern version of the tiles popular during the arts & crafts movement.

i'm interested in trying my hand at both "stamped" and "carved" types of designs.

are there any good books, classes, kits i should find?

and what about kilns - can i use one of those small propane fired models? i know i can't fit much in there, but if i'm willing to just fire a few at a time would it work ok??

thanks in advance-

hey all, I am new here, ya. I love clay and ya, I am making some molds and stamps for them as well.

I want to emboss slab, cause I am experimenting with making my own tiles for mosaic in clay, and am trying to better understand the stamp making process.

Is there anyone here who makes stamps or similar mold making with rubber? Is there a better material?
Artists/Designers Wanted

Hi everyone, I'm new to this tribe. I am looking to make connections with artists and fashion designers of all types who are already in business for themselves (with their own customers), and can provide samples for us to market with.

We are (quietly) starting the launch of Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners, which has been in development for seven years by Creative Endeavors Consulting Company. Our mission statement:

Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners is comprised of entrepreneurial-minded individuals and partner companies with the vision, problem solving, and experienced leadership ability needed to bring together the worlds of creative and business.

We are looking to form Alliances with artists in various mediums. Their creativity and ours will be utilized in the development of projects and product lines. The type of people we are looking for are clothing and jewelry designers, painters, sculptures, fashion illustrators, entertainers (for special events), photographers (for photo shoots), etc. Right now I am only interested in people/companies in California to ease into things. Later we will expand our search nationwide.

Please understand this is *not* a situation where we take whatever the artist has made and go look for markets to sell it to. We are creating markets, and inviting artists that have aligned with us into deals. Please also understand that we do not want to be the artist's primary form of income, which is why we want to work with already established businesses.

For consideration, please send an email to rp@cecpartners.com with the subject "Artist Search: [fill in what you do]." In the email, please provide your contact info (location!), company info, a website link, bio, and anything you can think of that would help us to decide whether we could work with you.

Lastly, please understand if I can't respond immediately. We know there is a tremendous need in the market for artist representation. I am opening the door just a crack on Tribe to see who is out there. We will be working as fast as we can to sort through emails and get back to people, but it will take some time to get things rolling. Even if we can't use your particular talent right away, we will keep you on file for future consideration, if it makes sense for our needs.

Regards,
Rebekah

Hi there--

I'm just getting into clay work intensively; my real experience is with super sculpey or having my few pieces to date fired FOR me.

What I'm curious about is mold-making. If I create a piece in sculpey and want to mass-produce it on a limited scale, what is the best approach for making molds? How do you manage cutlines and things?

Does anyone know of any handy books or websites for a rank beginner with ideas?

Being probably the newest here, I figured I'd ask to see if anyone is still paying attention to this room before staking a claim and investing too much. I'm a potter and would be willing to put something into this if I had a notion of there being someone actually there. So...is there even an echo?

I've been trying to force myself to make up prottypes for instruents recently...anybody making anything that makes sound?

I see there are only 2 of us here but this is an interesting topic.

I took quite a few ceramics classes in college (10 yrs ago) & have been thinking of getting back into it.

Any advice?
