Does anyone have any interest in being part of a 4001 Writing Group? I was thinking we could meet once every two weeks, read what we've been working on and offer friendly advice/criticism over Two Buck Chuck and snacks.

If you're at all interested, you can contact me at: ghosthouse@honeyghost.com

Dear fuckers in #7,

You and your fucking party....

Congratulations, your monotone disco is still coming through the wall. Knowing how many units adjoin yours, further congratulations are in order for pissing off half the building or at least those of us that for some odd reason wanted to sleep tonight.

"Oh no way, bra. That was DJ Bump-&-Half's killer DeepUrban LoftGoa TranceMix#9!!"

Don't care.
But I guess I should count my blessings that you didn't break out your SupahKillah 300 bpm modem-stylee bingbongitron glitch breaks.

If I didn't have to find my keys, boots, pants and maybe a shirt and a parka to walk around the building to vainly knock on your door or find someone accountable or at least find your breaker box to dump a bucket of water in it, I'd be over there to chat. As it is, even without the bracing chill and stride of a midnight march, I doubt that I'll be able to get back to sleep.

Love,
#12

P.S. Next weekend, we and associates are having an "Indoor Sighting and Firing Range Party."
You'll see our flyer on the bulletin board that will absolve us of all responsibility .
Btw, the short pistol range target is on our adjoining wall, so when you hear three blasts of the air klaxon, you should dive and lay flat on the concrete until you hear the all clear. Or not.
Cheers.

Oh look, it's 5:30.

hi there,

i've finally decided to leave my cramped sf studio for some more space to pursue circus arts.
i have friends at the vulcan, though that warehouse may not quite have anything suitable for me right now.
nonetheless, i'd like to have a new place for july 1.
so does anybody here have the contact info for your manager/landlord...
i'd be much appreciative.

thanks!

I'm ripping up that big spikey plant in front of my door (#30). I made sure it was alright with management. Sorry if anyone had strong feeling for it, it always got in the way and I thought it was really ugly.
I'll be planting some vegetables in that plot soon.

On that note- does anyone have any full-size gardening tools? I just have a little spade and Will & I did most of the hacking with knives. A garden fork and a shovel would be very helpful.

Thanks!

4001 to host City Council Candiates?

Hi, Everyone-
I saw the circular on the mailboxes for Ignacio De La Fuente and read through it. Then, I got curious about who he is running against - Mario Juarez. I went on-line and read about him and found out his office is at International and 40th. I went over there, met him and talked to him one-on-one for about 45 minutes. He sounds like a good guy with some good plans.

So...I am thinking about having him come to our building and talking to us. If anyone has strong feelings about dates, please post.

Also, in the interest of fairness, I was thinking about inviting De La Fuente to do the same, but on a different date.

Lastly, I have been thinking to making the meeting open to others in the neighborhood...

Thoughts?

The election is coming up pretty quickly, so I'd like to do this in the next couple of weeks...

The word on the street is that the police were in the building the other day. No word as to why they were here, but they were here nonetheless. I suppose it's a good enough reason to clean your rooms and get your paperwork in order; just in case.

March 26 Building Safety Meeting

Hi, All-
It wasn't a big turnout, but actually informative.

Attendees: Jessica, Jesse, Nao, Chris, Kenna and John.

Meeting notes: Building Manager Chris told us about his being mugged a few weeks ago. He did report this to the Oakland police, BART police and BART employees. It turns out that because he had been mugged on the corridor between the two parking lots (between 35th & 37th Aves), it is not in BART jurisdiction.

There is safety in numbers, so here is the best suggestion: get some phone numbers of neighbors who can walk to and from BART and local stores.

We all agree that anytime there is an incident, it must be reported to the Oakland Police. The increase in statistics will help get us more attention by the OPD.

It turns out that the BART parking lots are patrolled by a private security firm. Jesse stated the phone number for us to call in case of incident: 510-719-6626.

We need to the the OPD and Ignacio De La Fuente's office involved in improving our neighborhood.

There will be another meeting scheduled in the near future. If you are interested in attending, please post your best three dates and times. Thanks.

a great big THANK YOU to the person who put two space heaters into the free pile! I snagged one and it is sooo nice to be able to warm up my chilly room (which is totally blocked from the gas heater in our unit.) I'm sure the second heater is making someone else equally cozy. thanks!

the back pedestrian gate is broken -- AGAIN!

Last night Ray (#8) and I were investigating WHY the gate was broken again. While the cause is unknown, we have certainly figured out the symptom as well as a cure.

What needs to be done is a plate needs to be welded to the door jamb side where the bolt engages. This will help fill a gap between the door and the frame and it will allow the bolt to properly lock.

I have all the necessary equipment to make this happen, but what I don't have is the time. Right now I am busier than ever preparing for an up-coming sale and can't take the hour(s) needed to construct a bracket, weld it, smooth it and paint it.

If someone industrious wants to give it a go, please drop me a line and I'll show you what needs to be done to remedy the situation better than the lame excuses for locksmiths can manage to achieve.

I've made a personal vow to rid myself of at least one thing every day this month. Except for the days that I am out of town, I'll be putting some rad stuff in the free pile. So far, it's been graced with a bed of nails, two pairs of stilts a bunch of circuitboards and a box of fresh food.

Today I was rather industrious and now there's a car stereo, bouncy shoes, a bag of fabric, my favorite shopping cart chair (sniff), a bunch of steel, a beedazeller, computer, a tarot deck and some flashlights!

I'm really hoping that it reaches some good homes and does not head straight for the dumpster before everyone gets their pickins. So, head over, check your mail and pick through the huge pile.

More to come.

Looking for a walking-home-from-BART buddy

Hey! After a couple of incidents in the last couple of weeks (one attempted mugging, and one dude following me down 40th yelling "EY PUTA!"), I'm pretty disenchanted with walking home alone from the Fruitvale BART. Giving up BART isn't an option, so I was hoping I could coordinate with other 4001 residents so we can walk home together, creating a united front of badassery.

My schedule's reasonably flexible, so I can meet people at the station anywhere between 6 and 8 p.m. It varies sometimes (some days I work super late and would get a ride or take a cab) so I'd be happy to check in by e-mail or IM every day to figure out what train we're catching.

If you're interested, my e-mail addy is arletterocks at gmail and I'm arletterocks on Yahoo instant messenger and AIM.

live/work is under threat -- a forwarded message

Hello Oakland Arts Community.

I'm sending this out to all of you in hopes that you'll read it and pass it along. The city of Oakland is considering a measure that will hurt us if passed by banning all live/work that is not already 100% legal. Any of you who are in such space thus become far more vulnerable, and the creation of any such space will be stopped dead in its tracks.

I hope to spread the word and bring about some grass roots support at Planning Commission and City Council meetings. The last time I spoke at one of these meetings, I was the sole representative of the work/live community. I hope that at the next meeting there will be many more of us. Thus far the discussion has been dominated by either industrial property owners who are concerned about complaints from live/work users, or speculative residential developers who generally aren't interested in serving artists. This coming meeting is at City Hall on February 13th, at 7pm.

__________

Here is the issue, summarized as quickly as I can manage:

Oakland is redefining what is permitted in its industrial zones. Under the proposed new rules, up to 80% of the area that once allowed
work/live use will be lost. The motivation for the new rules seems to come from a couple of different concerns. First, industrial land owners and businesses feel threatened by the recent explosion in faux live/work condos in industrial areas. Industry is worried that the people in these developments will complain about noise, pollution and traffic, and make it difficult to do business in Oakland. Second, Oakland has been losing manufacturing and industrial jobs.

The city zoning staff and the industrial community seem to believe that they can improve their situation by banning all residence within
these industrial zones. What they have failed to realize is that legitimate work/live artists, craftspeople and tradesmen are not a
part of their problem. Our hybrid way of life is real, and most of us are just as engaged in high-impact activities as the industrial
community is. The proposal that is on the table needs to be changed to allow legitimate work/live to continue. We can't let them throw the baby out with the bath water (and us with it) by lumping all forms of live/work and live/work together and banning it altogether.

__________

Again, the next meeting on this topic at City Hall is on Wednesday, February 13th at 7pm. This process is quite far along, so there is an urgent need to mobilize and show that we have not been included the consideration of in this imminent, misguided action. It would be great if there was a place where we could meet beforehand to discuss a unified strategy for presenting at the meeting and for actions, so if any of you can host, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, please just show up. The sooner we make ourselves heard, the sooner we can get results. The consequences for our community are serious if we don't turn this around.

Thanks,

Max Allstadt

Did someone leave bread outside our door?

It looks like really amazing bread! Raisins, sunflower seeds... I'm leery of eating stuff that I don't know where it came from though. So if you wanna gift us food, please please let us know - so we can thank you (and so we won't be afraid to eat it!) I hate to miss out on what looks like awesome bread, but I've been sick too much lately to chance it. :-/ (Especially now as we are in a big production push for a sale next weekend.)

We have a doorbell - open the screen door, it is to the left in the doorframe. Or call us! My # is 6nine9 4DJM in the 415, or you can even hit up the call box.

Someone (I imagine with good intentions) took one of my plants from the courtyard last night. If it was you or you know who took it, I want it back. It's a long philodendron-looking plant in a green hanging basket. It was out on the concrete benches along with a ratty-looking houseplant plant, an eggplant, and my broccoli plants, none of which are very good-looking and are therefore still in the courtyard.
I was going to bring it inside once I found a cat-free location for it, I swear.

of ants and termites

I've been seeing a number of large cocoon -looking things in the parking lot and in my house these past few weeks. Tonight I saw a rather large insect that M described as a "flying ant." Curious, I did a little research into what a flying at is.

Flying ants can be of the "carpenter ant" species, or worse, large termites. They are both about 1/2" long, have large wings and segmented bodies. The easiest way to tell the difference between the ant and the termite is by it's antennae. The Ant has hinged or segmented antennae and the termite has straight antennae.

If you see the termite, then it's high time to write a letter the MP! I have yet to catch one, but from now on I will be keeping my eyes open to find out.

Neither are good, and I have a feeling that the building is due to be seriously fumigated.

Won't THAT be fun?!

Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness Meeting - 10/27!

Join your neighbors in #26 for a Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness meeting this Saturday, 10/27. We will watch training films, discuss how to properly fend off the zombies when they inevitably show up, and enjoy refreshments and good company.

Starts at dark-thirty. Be prepared to prove you are not a zombie yourself to get in. (The password is "hey guys, let me in!") We have a number of very informational documentaries to screen, so the meeting will likely go rather late. Refreshments will be available, but bringing treats to share is always welcome.

The building is fairly well-fortified but it's always good to be prepared. See you Saturday!

UPDATE: Wattling St. Project

Re: the development proposal for Wattling and our rear parking lot

Well, I went to the design review meeting at city hall last night and I left with mixed feelings about the whole deal. Two commissioners attended. I and the senile owner of the warehouse rented to the "May Wah Co" were the only folks from our neighborhood iln attendance.

On one hand, the commissioners and the staff rep of the Building Department seem well intentioned and have concerns which they aren't shy about voicing. On the other hand, the project has an incredible density, is predictably cheap and artless in design and includes a massive billboard over a bullshit "zen garden" or park at the other end of Wattling. I have a copy of the staff report and a A4 sized set of the prelim design plans (about 50 pages).

I won't attempt to descrbe the project as a whole here but there are a few salient points worth mentioning:

- The Parking Lot: The issue is still up in the air. Madison Park was described as going through a "quiet title process" (just what does that mean??) regarding the ownership of the land. My impresssion was that there is a little wrangling to be done with higherups that is contingent on MP getting its shit together. The plan as it stands now is to just deadend the street without a court or turnaround and place seven "attached single family dwellings" at the rear of the triangular plot. Overall, for the 62 units facing Wattling, there is an allowance of one offstreet parking space per unit.

- The Money or "pricepoint": The developer, John Lesser, is looking for approximately $400k for the 3 br places and $300k for the condos on 37th. good luck.

- The Billboard: It's a lit up, 80 foot tall, three sided monstrosity (14' x 48' per side) to be place down by State Shingle. It towers over some little fenced off plot the developers referred to as a "zen garden and park." *cringe* I was the only only who laughed out loud. But Amie Schiff from the Oakland Heritage Alliance offered - "I hope to never hear 'zen garden' and 'billboard' in the same sentence ever again." Hah! Right On, Amie!!
NOTES:
* It's hardly a park if no one from the neighborhood has access to it. * The billboard seems to be the big issue and sticking point on everyone elses mind. * The site is coveted for billboard placement and will bring top dollar for its sightlines towards 880 and BART. * There have been backroom negotiation between de la Fuente, the developer, and Clear Channel for a one time "donation to the city" as well as the removal of 15 little billboards along Fruitvale. * A Planning Commissioner works for Clear Channel. (Imagine my surprise... )

- Pollution: One of the biggest design problems the architect has been working on is how they are gonna meet State noise standards for the interior spaces. It seems our neighborhood is noisy. They are going to be required to have air filtration on the interiors as well. It seems our neighborhood is filthy.

There are still a lot of meetings to go. Drop a line or knock on #12 if you want to check out the plans. I think I might scan a few pages so that I can email jpegs to interested folks.

back lot security cam

A few nights ago, I've installed a security camera in the back parking lot. Next week, I'll be installing a weatherproof housing for it and mounting it in a more tactile location to achieve a better vantage point. Presently, it only sends a motion JPEG stream to a web browser, but eventually I plan on adding an archive feature that will keep image sequences on a web server in case the zombies attack.

I'm unsure if I should just do it or if I should ask for permission first. If it's mounted outside, then it might be too much for MP to deal with.

Opinions?

Please discuss.

An open letter in two parts:

1) Two years is long enough. How is it possible that I haven't met more of you by now? I've quit drinking, learned how to brush my teeth, and was recently de-loused. Your excuses are gone. I'm Gus. Nice to meet y'all.

2) I have a Kreonite color darkroom processor that I've been agonizing over for two years now. I built a room especially for it, but when push comes to shove, I just don't do enough color printing to warrant spending the time to set up the beast. Would anyone else be well served by an in-building color darkroom? Should I donate it to a school somewhere?

With all regards,

Gus

Has anyone gotten word from Chris and Delene about additional dog deposits? like another 250 bucks?
We did in number 12 re: "Scout" and Mara moving in.

Off the top of my head....
gotta call "Bullshit!"

Maybe we could come to some sort of deal: deduct a buck for each spider infesting the place. a couple more for each mouse, 50 bucks for every broken window...

I think we will come out ahead.

Hi to all the new peeps in the building. Sorry if I forget your names, but it usually takes me about three times to finally get it right.

Michelle (23) was talking about a having a bbq at the end of this month. I'd like to poll the building to see who would be interested. Saturday is Love Parade and Sunday is Folsom Street Fair, so there's a possibility of some conflicts. The last weekend in October looks promising though (27th/28th).

condos, townhouses and your parking space (oh my)

Working off a hot tip, I went over to the local school for a neighborhood meeting regarding the construction of new townhouses and condominiums along Wattling Street. The current plan is a multi-phase roll-out of new developments spanning several years. Construction is to begin at 28th and Wattling, and is planned to continue down Wattling all the way to the embankment adjacent to the 880 offramp (42nd Ave.). Furthermore, civil improvements of Wattling will include sidewalks and trees stretching the length of the project.

What this means to us, aside from dealing with near-by construction, is that we will be loosing the back parking lot as a result of this development. I'm sure everyone has seen the notice on the back gate written in confusing legalese. Well, the back story is that the back parking lot is indeed a continuation of Wattling and Madison Park has no claim on the land. Furthermore, when the City Council and City Planners found out about the gated parking, they became really interested in the fact that Madison Park is essentially renting us parking on public property.

All of this information has yet to be validated, but going by the facts that have been presented to me, it is extremely likely that the back parking lot will soon disappear and we who live back here will have doors that open onto the street. Parking will then be a free-for-all and most likely a premium for those who can find a spot close by. It also means that this area will be accessible to anyone and will further reduce the safety and security of our fine gated community.

I am planning on attending more city meetings as they come up, and I also plan on ensuring that we all are kept aware of what is going on around us -- especially since Madison Park doesn't want us to know the full truth about the situation.

I wish the lords of the land would post which units are open with prices and all that jazz, like they used to.

I know we've got a few open at the moment and I'm always curious about them. Plus, Will and I are thinking about downsizing. As much as we love our place, it's too expensive, and just getting more expensive as time goes on ($60 rent increase, wtf?).

Anyone have the inside scoop? If not, I'll call C&D and ask for the run-down.

---------->Looking for PERFORMERS w/ act or costumes and skills to PArade "How Berkeley Can you Be?! -----The show must go on.

Hi,
I have a spot reserved in the How Berkeley Can you BE? parade~ and I would like to perform along side a group that allready has worked together. Perhaps, at least 3 or 4 other people. I just want to have fun and I can work around your act.

This is to perform and parade this Sunday Sept. the 30th. I would really like to perform and I allready have some Puppets and masks created and ready to go. another option is, if you have allready signed up for the "how berkeley" parade, I can cancel my registration if I have to and join you.

I have paraded in alot of protests... at Burning Man, and with Bread and Puppet theater in Vermont, (through and internship) and more...
I am a percussionist / puppeteer / performer/visual artist who is working more clowning and dancing into my performances.

here is a link :
www.davidavidson.artistportfolio.net ---- art, puppets
www.myspace.com/summerhilltribal --------music
www.myspace.com/hoptripsoundscape

i have lots of ideas, and can improvise quickly. We could meet once or twice before and then parade at the end of the month.
I have some people who can show up and be extra hands but it would be GREAT to accompany someone who allready has a group, costumes and act together.
My troupe from this summer has moved there own ways now that fall has started, then I got sick, and now.... The show must GO on. : )
I am trying to use the spot I have reserved and ... I just want to have fun parading.... I would like to throw a puppet mask on... then dance and clown around. Please reply soon, as we should meet up this week or next and I need to contact the Parde people w/ changes.

some Options and possibilities:
dancing, acting, clowning, stilts, juggling, flags waving and spinnning, poi juggling, sorry no fire allowed in this specific parade, (not sure why)
I can make an animal costume... like on Fellini's CLOwns, the traditional 2 person cow or horse

and here are puppets and masks I allready have----- www.davidavidson.artistportfolio.net
davidavidson@gmail.com

I would be so happy if you helped me and I could help perform. I allready paid the fees for the parade and everythiing.

Sincerely, David Davidson

We're having another show this Friday at 8pm in #27. You should come! There will be music and puppets and new videos from the Family Ghost gang. The fantastic Chadwick Lombardi and the All-Star-Sing-O-Nators (barbershop sextet) will be performing as well. Can you believe it?! It's going to be so awesome that I am screaming in shock as I write this.

Now that we've shaken (most of) the dust out of our hair and have the brainspace for crafting, Knittaz in tha Hood is back! Join M and Jovino and me at our stitch 'n' bitch next Wednesday!

Bring your knitting stuff, crochet accouterments, small crafts, sewing, etc. (or a willingness to learn a craft, or a willingness to sit around drinking beer and bullshitting happily) to the Bunny Factory (that would be #26 in the back) next Wednesday at around 8. Snacks and beer and wine are also good things to bring. If you're a knitter stalled on a project or battling a new technique, c'mon over -- I'e got mad knitting skillz and can troubleshoot knitting pretty well, if I do say so myself.

There's a tribe, too: http://tribes.tribe.net/knittazindahood/

Seeya then!

Hi guys,

As the subject stated, we're having a puppet show at the Ghost House this Saturday! It's a fundraiser to help send me on tour at the end of this summer. It would be wonderful if you could come by and show your support! Here are the details:

What: sweet live jams by The Cool Night Air (Jesse Jackson's band - www.myspace.com/thecoolnightair), live puppetry and videos (www.youtube.com/shwbst), WINE AND CHEESE! Yeah!
When: This Saturday, 7/28, 8pmish
Where: The Ghost House, #27 (in this very building!)
Cost: sliding scale (aka whatever you want). For donations of $5 or more, you get a Showbeast DVD, mustache and a chance to win your very own puppet

BTW FYI, now that melting stone with ignited iron has become ho-hum, the next 'Fuckin' Jerks of Oakland' projects that are already in the works include replicating a WWII Wehrmacht '222' armored reconnaissance car, an updated version of a vintage V8 powered, 160dB+ foghorn, and a Heron's Steam Engine demo/installation/performance/ ..errr...calamity.

(No worries, y'all - we're gonna be testing the foghorn in the desert, international waters etc., not the parking lot.
Does anybody have some Artillery grade, peak and phase cancellation ear muffs I could borrow? ...heh)
Come on by #12, door will be open and we'll be doing final prep there as well as hanging out.
We are serious about needing more heavy steel, stone, cast iron, concrete to cut and melt so ....give it up.

Guinea pig needs a home

Hi 4001 friends,

Soon after getting my guinea pig, I snuggled him one day to find that I am very allergic to him. In a big old facial explosion kind of way. It's the worst. My roommates can't take him out too much because he sheds and my eyeballs turn into two spheres of flames. Guinea pigs are social and love hanging out with people, so this situation is less than ideal for everyone involved. Would anyone be interested in taking him in? Here are the specs:

-guinea pig
-male
-Peruvian long hair
-2 years old
-loves bananas
-really sweet and gentle
-his teeth are a little crooked, which means the top front teeth aren't getting filed down by the bottom teeth. As a result, they just keep growing and make it difficult for him to eat. To keep things under control, we have to take him to the vet every three months or so to get them filed down. The cost is about $25.

Tell your friends! Trying to do this through Craigslist has been a most unsavory experience.

Thanks,
Erin

Fourth of July: A little (but intensely hot, powerful and fun) "Party" for the building

Last year on the playa (BMan), A couple of us 4001ers ("Fuckin Jerks - Oakland Chapter") put together a "thermal lance" to demonstrate and for kicks we're gonna fire it all up again this July 4th in the SLeandro St parking lot.

"A brief explanation: a thermal lance is a cutting tool that utilizes ignited iron fed with a stream of pressurized oxygen. A steel tube packed with steel rod (and aluminum or magnesium) is connected to a valved handle assembly fed by an oxygen line and tank.
An intensely hot (6k - 10 k degrees Fahrenheit) oxy/steel fueled jet is created at the tip. Lances and lance setups are available commercially but we made our own from scratch. We have bored and cut through a variety of stuff including granite, concrete, steel I beams, quartz heavy sandstone, a cast iron fire hydrant, etc."

And to give you an idea of just how much beautiful ass this power toy kicks, here is the link to our page and some bitchin' pix of us melting
granite in the desert : http://grouchosuave.wordpress.com/thermal-lance-project/

So come on out and have some fun. And if you have something massive or armored or 4 feet thick that you would like to turn back into lava, bring that too.

And to state the obvious -
BRING BEER.

Just because we don't presently have a car doesn't mean we don't use that space on occasion, and even if we didn't, it's our space! It's part of the rent we pay. If you absolutely must use that space, please ask us. If you really need an extra space on a more permanent basis, we might be able to make arrangements.

Hi folks--

We have had a little trouble with our mazda lately, parked out on 40th Ave. On the night of Friday the 27th, someone seems to have backed into our car in the middle of the night. If anyone has any info, we'd really appreciate it. Especially if you saw or heard it. Our insurance company is being jerks about it. Here's the damage. It was parked out in front of one of the corner houses with the giant metal fences.

http://eds.org/~tina/lj_photos/mazda-2007-smash.jpg

Also, someone clipped off the last digit of our license plate as well. You know, because we slashed through the sticker so they wouldn't steal it. Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone have any recommendations for keeping people from doing this? I'm going to totally pop-rivet the whole thing on this next time, but it's still damn inconvenient and $50 to replace the plates and sticker. ):

http://eds.org/~tina/lj_photos/mazda-2007-plate.jpg

Any info for sympathy would be appreciated, thanks!

Hello 4001 friends,

My name is Erin Gleeson and I live with my friends in #27. We're going to make pizzas and watch Mystery Science Theater at our house on 4/28 at 8pm. It's going to be lovely and we want you to join us. We will be watching episode 822 ("Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" - http://www.agonybooth.com/overdrawn/ ) projected onto the wall of our living room. I've been dreaming about what kinds of pizzas to make, and I think I might experiment with a sweet little blue cheese, artichoke and garlic delight.

Please note that we will have vegan and gluten-free options available!

We also all might get to shave part of my roommate's face.

Thanks,
Erin Gleeson

Hi friends! Next week, I'm going to start the Movie Night again.
I hope Thursday works for you. If not, let me know.

So I have a lot of movies I want to show, but I've been pondering what type of movie will be the best to restart the movie night. And I thought nothing better than showing "a film that often thought to be the worst movie but with a careful study and, hopefully, intelligent enough critical perspective, it's not that bad" kind of movie. So with the veterans day in mind, I thought we should revisit Paul Verhoeven's 1997 sci-fi film "Starship Troopers". This film is known to be one of his worst, but the Iraq war and increasingly fascistic government and militarism of today prove that this film is a great satire and insightful look into the now present future.

So come over to 4001 San Leandro St. #22 Oakland, for beer and popcorn, and watch a bunch of young beautiful soldiers fighting giant alien bugs.

Hey guys, as you may know there was a small fire in the back "yard" this morning. Will and I put it out at about 7:15. Someone left their ribs cooking in the big smoker, on the wood chips, with the hose underneath it. When I was leaving the house the yard and the freeway entrance were flooded with smoke and some woodchips were on fire.
So now we have a melted hose and home-made charcoal.

It feels so silly to say this, but let's try to *not* burn down our home.

Does anyone know the fate of the stuff that lands in the free box? It depresses me to think it might go to the dumpster when someone somewhere might be able to use it. If it's been going to the dumpster, I have been thinking about making a run down to the Goodwill once in awhile so it doesn't just get thrown away.

If you feel like helpin' out with this endeavor, let me know. I have a micro-truck that will probably fit the usual size of the pile of stuff that's there.

One of my buddies will be looking for a room in a warehouse space within the next two months. He's looking for a spot in a place with 3-5 people, trying to get out and about and have a more exciting life than his single apartment affords him. If anyone has anything opening up within the next few months, let me know and I'll pass his info.

Thanks!

HGTV Looking for Homeowners for Landscaping Show!

On a budget and looking for help redesigning your backyard?

Landscape Smart is looking for homeowners in the San Francisco Bay area who want to get their hands dirty redesigning their backyard. You'll get to work with one of our fabulous designers and our talented, reliable contractors who will help you create a great new yard -- all on a reasonable budget.

We are all about Smart Ideas that can save you time, money and effort on your landscape project. We can help you save a bundle on a design that might cost you much more. Our projects are primarily soft-scaping and do not include building decks, fences, pools or pouring concrete. Check out some of our shows at HGTV.com to get an idea of the types of projects we cover.

You will need to commit to two full weekdays working on your yard in front of our cameras, plus three other half-days for planning meetings and ancillary photography. You should also be looking to spend about $7000 on your project. The total cost to you is aprox 1/3 - 1/4th of the normal price. We provide a number of resources, including a really hip professional designer, part of the cost of materials and a project that actually gets finished in two days.

Ideal candidates for Landscape Smart are homeowner couples who are outgoing, energetic, equally excited to be on TV, like to work, are open-minded and not cost-conscious beyond reason. Ideal yards are flat, around 30’x30’ and do not require more than one day of concrete removal. Interested? E-mail us at: landscapesmartsf@edelmanproductions.com.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Special Screening this Sunday, August 6th

Hi friends,
We are having normal movie night this thursday, but THIS SUNDAY, 6th, is 60 year anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. As Luke called it "Be Really Nice to Japanese Day." So be kind and come to the 4001 San Leandro Warehouse. I'll be showing a local documentary film director from Berkeley, Steven Okazaki's short film about Hiroshima called "The Mushroom Club", followed by Japanese Animation film "Barefoot Gen." It will be two hours in total, and we will start the screening at 8:30.

I understand this is a heavy topic to face, but it is increasingly becoming important to have clear idea of what a few stupid politicians can do to innocent civilians around the world. These movies will give you vivid and horrific images of how far they are willing to go in order to gain power.

4001 San Leandro St. #22 Oakland

I hope to see you there,
and don't forget, we still have Thursday Film Night and we will be viewing "Daisies" this week.

Next movie night is Thursday, August 3rd, and we are viewing a Czech New Wave Cinema, "Sedmikrasky" (1966) by Vera Chytilová.

SYNOPSIS:

Two girls named Marie see the world around them to be inhabited by a spoiled society. The Maries decide they should be given such allowances and embark on a rebellious streak of what seem to be harmless pranks. However, each of the moves is loaded with consequences that soon snowball into serious trouble.

This freewheeling 1966 gem of the Czech New Wave is an attack on consumerism and materialism as well as many other aspects the male dominated society of the time. Director Vera Chytilova weaves together this absurdist allegorical work by avoiding a common narrative structure. Instead DAISIES fills the screen with surreal comedy and unforgettable images of ranging misguided youthful protest to serious political commentary.

WHEN & WHERE

August 3, 8:30
4001 San Leandro St. #22
Oakaland

Also, I'm planning on a special movie night on Sunday August 6th. It is 60th year anniversary of bombing of Hiroshima and I would like to show a short documentary film "The Mushroom Club" by Steven Okazaki, followed by an animation film "Hadashi-no Gen (Barefoot Gen)" It'll be about two hour event. I understand it is a heavy topic, but I hope to see you there.

so... what the hell is happening with this place? I'm often cleaning dogshit off of my shoes and yesterday there was a really tough looking dude rummaging through the dumpsters. I don't know how he got in, but he let himself out by going through the building. chris says he's going to call 911 and report a break-in next time he sees someone. I'm just thankful all they want is our trash, but I am also a bit concerned. I spent about an hour yesterday wiring some weak spots in the back fence. The barbed wire was only going to be so good until someone learned that you could just pull the fence apart. No more. It's fixed. what's next? Do we have to lock our dumpsters now?
