Yup. I've fallen victim to a blind lane changer, there was nothing I could do. The bike hit road grit and that was all she wrote, down we went. Happily the bike didn't hit anything which limited the damage to slightly bent bars, a chewed up throttle grip, and some superficial scrapes to the can on the starboard side. Broke a mirror too, but not a scratch on the tank or engine!
I faired ok too. chewed up a couple knuckles and a little raspberry on my hip where the jacket pulled up a little as I slid.
The bike never even stalled, and I rode away after having a little chat about blind spots with the minivan driver on the cell phone. Yup.
The only thing I recall thinking as I slid down the road was .."please don't let the bike hit anything!" , lol. I think I was on my feet before it stopped sliding.
Anyway, just a reminder, those padded kackets and gloves are awesome. Keep wearing 'em. (my helmet never touched the road :) )
Hope you all stay safe this spring.

Re: Dumped it.
Fri, April 3, 2009 - 9:21 PMEverybody dumps it. It's good that you didn't get hurt. Now you will be looking for those blind lane changers. Just last week a car made a left in front of me, lucky I could go behind him and there was no one in the oncoming lane and I didn't lock up my brakes.

Sun, April 5, 2009 - 4:38 PMDon't feel bad I had recently come down a hill which finishes up around a corner then merges from two lanes into four lanes. 2000 feet into the merge I am in the left hand lane and a cage to my right Makes a fast evasive move into my lane, no indicator nothing just an aggressive maneuver. thank good for ABS I locked up , no harm to me or my bike, except my Adrenaline is racing. I go flying up to the car to give my unbiased opinion of that block headed move. I pulled up about to express my feelings when I look in, and it is my mom. -

Re: Dumped it.
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 2:34 PMTrue, up here (Vermont) it is especially prevelant in early spring. The salting and sanding of roads leaves a lot of crud there. After we get some good spring rain, real downpours with thunder and lightnenig, the roads tend to be cleaner. It hasn't rained hard yet and I've been putting off riding for weeks because of it, I wish I'd put it off a little more.
Oh well.

So what happened afterwards? -

Re: Dumped it.
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 5:19 PMNot trying to blame you, but I do understand your eagerness to get out on the road. Would riding a bit slower and cautiously have made much difference?

Re: Dumped it.
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 6:29 PMSounds like it could have been much worse for you and your bike. Glad to hear you're [relatively] ok.
What kind of gear, if any, did you have on your legs? My 2 piece leathers have a full zipper around the waist, but my textile jacket and overpants only have about a 6" zipper @ the back. Sounds like you might have been in jeans?
I had more than one serious Oh Shit moment today, ironically due to drivers [over]reacting to emergency vehicles. Once was a wrecklessly fast lane change in response to an ambulance siren. Another was due to 1/8th of a mile of freeway traffic driving like idiots while rubbernecking at a big accident on the other side of the freeway. In both cases, I would have at least partially shared the blame for each - riding a touch too fast and loose for the conditions. Was there any of this involved in your mishap? -

Re: Dumped it.
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 6:57 PMI was in jeans, a padded JoeRocket jacket and gloves. The jacket held up perfectly, even though I was sliding on my chest, not a scratch on it! The glove ground away on my left hand, but that was it. I think knowing a little about falling (20+ years taking highspeed diggers on snowboards and mountainboards) onto hard sufaces was a little help. But overall I was lucky. Speed wasn't an issue, I was being very cautious. I avoided hitting the car, and had it not been for the loose gravel on the road (the middle of the road) I'd have stopped just fine. I was going about 25-30mph, decelerated to maybe 15-20 before I hit the road.
Ultimately I chalk it up to the risk I take getting on the bike. There is no single person to blame, the conditions combined and the result was ditching. Happily nothing horrible happened.

It's funny how we care more about our bikes than ourselves in those situations. I remember once resisting attempts to get me into an ambulance while looking for my exhaust that had fallen off in the accident... it's wasn't just shock either - your bike really is your 'baby'!
