I'm going to have to start heading into the Financial District for some meetings.

Any suggestions for the best places to park a bike?

Are riders really that independent and rebellious?

Judging from some motorcycle forums I'm on, I'd have to vote no.

Most riders are seemingly just riders with the same conforming, judgmental attitudes found everywhere else.

New parking machines and motorcycles

The new parking machines print out a receipt, and you're supposed to put them under the windshield.

But exactly are motorcyclists _supposed_ to do?

Are we supposed to wedge the receipt under the seat and hope it doesn't blow away?

Are there any salvage yards around N. California?

Are any of the online sites particularly good or bad?

I need your help with a project for class. It's a quick survey (shouldn't
take more than a minute or two) that can be completed by following this
link: http://columbia.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_25zuMvcCReLG41S&SVID=Prod

It's motorcycle-related, and I guarantee full anonymity/privacy (there's no
personally-identifying data, and nobody sees this but my professor and me).

Thanks!

Yup. I've fallen victim to a blind lane changer, there was nothing I could do. The bike hit road grit and that was all she wrote, down we went. Happily the bike didn't hit anything which limited the damage to slightly bent bars, a chewed up throttle grip, and some superficial scrapes to the can on the starboard side. Broke a mirror too, but not a scratch on the tank or engine!

I faired ok too. chewed up a couple knuckles and a little raspberry on my hip where the jacket pulled up a little as I slid.

The bike never even stalled, and I rode away after having a little chat about blind spots with the minivan driver on the cell phone. Yup.

The only thing I recall thinking as I slid down the road was .."please don't let the bike hit anything!" , lol. I think I was on my feet before it stopped sliding.

Anyway, just a reminder, those padded kackets and gloves are awesome. Keep wearing 'em. (my helmet never touched the road :) )

Hope you all stay safe this spring.

Yesterday at Road Rider in San Jose, I picked up a Gerbing jacket liner with thermostat at cost plus 15 percent. (What a neat sale!)

Without a doubt, this heated jacket is the best investment I've made in terms of riding gear in the past year. Don't know though if it'll fit under my leather jacket. Probably it'll be a little snug. But under my 'Stich jacket, it's just about perfect!

And last night, I had to slab for almost two hours. It was so cold (chill windex was probably somewhere in the teens) that I had to put the thermostat on the solid red (highest heat setting).

Motorcyclist, 21, killed in Brooklyn by drunken driver, police say

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2009/03/08/2009-03-08_motorcyclist_21_killed_in_brooklyn_by_dr.html

Monday, March 9th 2009, 1:42 AM

An avid motorcyclist was killed in Brooklyn early Sunday when a drunken driver slammed an SUV into him as he rode his cherished bike, police said.

Brian Sitarevich was cruising on his Honda with buddies when a sloshed Daniel Levens drove his Ford Explorer into him head-on in Greenpoint, police said.

Paramedics rushed Sitarevich, 21, from the horrific scene to Bellevue Hospital, but he didn't make it.

"We loved him very much," said Nella Sitarevich, Brian Sitarevich's mother. "But now he's with God."

Cops arrested Levens, 35, of Queens, and charged him with driving while intoxicated. He was awaiting arraignment last night.

John Sitarevich, the victim's father, reserved judgment on the crash - for now.

Brian Sitarevich had a lamb dinner at his Queens home last night, then took off with friends to enjoy one of his favorite pastimes, riding his motorcycle. About 1:30 a.m., he led a line of motorcyclists east on Greenpoint Ave.
THE AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST ASSOCIATION URGES YOU TO CALL YOUR U.S. SENATORS NOW AND SAY "NO!" TO HR146!
US HR146: NO!
*******************

PRESERVE YOUR RIGHT-TO-RIDE ON 2.1 MILLION ACRES OF AMERICA!

The American Motorcyclist Association urges everyone to contact their Senators to vote "No" on H.R. 146, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefield Acquisition Grant Program. This bill was formerly known as S. 22, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, which would prohibit all motorized vehicle access including motorcycles and ATVs on over 2 million acres of public lands. As you may know, S. 22 was defeated just days ago on March 11 in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Now, following defeat of the bill, the U.S. Senate leadership is expected to employ a little used parliamentary procedure that allows them to overcome the outcome of the House vote on S. 22:

The U.S. House of Representatives preserved your access to vital public lands when S. 22 fell two votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass on March 11th. The successful defeat of the bill was only accomplished after thousands of concerned individuals, like you, contacted their Representatives to tell them to oppose the legislation. However, the Senate Leadership wants to try and undo that success by bringing the bill back as a 1,300 page amendment to an unrelated bill [H.R. 146] for a vote as early as Monday:

With such a short timeframe for action, the best way to tell your Senators to vote "No" on H.R. 146 is to call. Click here to get the phone number for your Senators:

...If you would prefer to contact your Senators with e-mail, you may contact your Senators by clicking here. We have pre-written a letter for your use:

Immediate action is critical to help keep 2.1 million acres of public land open to motorized recreation. Please call your Senators and tell everyone you can to do the same.

Next week, every Senator must know to vote "No" on H.R. 146!
Subject: FW: Subject: Amend Nevada's Helmet Law

Bruce Arnold,

Please forward this CALL TO ACTION to all motorcyclists.

Nevada has a helmet bill introduced as of today, it is AB300. We are presenting the bill primarily as a tourism revenue generator. If motorcyclists are from out of state, let Nevada legislators know that you would visit and vacation in Nevada if it was a freedom of choice state.

Thank you,

John Bland
NV MRF Rep.
Northern Nevada ABATE President

E-mail, Call and Write the Transportation Committee Members and ask them to support AB300.

This bill eliminates the requirement of wearing protective headgear for drivers of motorcycles who: (1) are 21 years of age or older; (2) have possessed a valid motorcycle license for not less than 1 year; and (3) have completed an approved motorcycle safety course. This bill eliminates the requirement of wearing headgear for a passenger of a motorcycle who is 21 of age or older.

You can see the bill on the Legislative web site:

These are the key points you can use in your correspondence to the Legislators:

- Nevada has a tourism based economy and amending Nevada's helmet law will encourage motorcyclists to visit Nevada.

- When states modify mandatory helmet laws - sales, ownership and riders sharply increase.

- Amending Nevada's helmet law will generate millions of dollars for Nevada without raising taxes through increased motorcycle sales and tourism....

- Motorcycles are 6% of national traumatic brain injuries, Bicycles are 7%, Pedestrians are 13%, Occupants of Enclosed Motor Vehicles are 62%, Others are 12%. Motorcycle injuries are not a cost burden to tax payers.

Contact legislators on the Assemly Transportation Committee and ask them to support AB300
Proposed Motorcycle Smog Check Legislation, California SB435:

http://tinyurl.com/am6sxx

Quote from Jeff Hennie of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF.org):

"[ A California State Senator ] has introduced legislation [ SB435 ] that would require motorcycles to participate in the state's vehicle "smog check" program. The program was designed to service cars and because of that motorcycles were exempt "until the Department of Consumer Affairs implements test procedures applicable to motorcycles" according to standing California state law. Senator Fran Pavley (D) is the main sponsor of the bill which would require all motorcycles beginning with model year 2000 to be tested starting in 2012.... This bill is problematic for a number of reasons. First off, it provides for no funding for the development of testing procedures. Secondly, no funding for the accommodation of the new 1.2 million motorcycles at the check stations. This will result in a financial burden for the California government at a time when every penny is already spoken for.... In the MRF's view, the California state legislature should reconsider this motion. When the!
funding is available, it would then seem more feasible to invest in proper investigatory programs to best determine how to test motorcycles or if it is even necessary."

‘Motorcycle detection system’ on roads by Easter

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/mcn/2009/February/16-22/feb1609-new-surveillance-system/

By Steve Farrell

Politics & the law

17 February 2009 11:53

A new surveillance system designed to track movements of motorcyclists on the roads will be operational by Easter, MCN can reveal.

The technology can tell motorcycles apart from other vehicles, measure their speeds and will be able to read number plates under plans. Data such as the routes taken by individual motorcyclists along with time and date will be collected and kept even if they have committed no offence.

The £100,000 project has prompted civil rights groups to express grave concerns about the potential for invasion of motorcyclists’ privacy.

Speed camera bossed behind the scheme have named it the ‘motorcycle data project’ and the equipment a ‘motorcycle detection system’.

It will scrutinise movements of motorcyclists in particular and be switched on to coincide with the start of the riding season in April, they say.

The new surveillance system has been installed on eight routes in Derbyshire by the region’s speed camera partnership, including the popular Cat & Fiddle run on the A54 and A537 near Buxton.

Under-road sensors already in place will distinguish motorcycles from other vehicles by their weight and width. Speed will be measured by timing their progress between two sensors a short distance apart. The system has been designed to work alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and video cameras.

A spokeswoman for the scheme said knowing where riders were from would allow road safety ads to target key areas, for example through local newspapers.

But Isabella Sankey, Director of Policy for the civil rights group Liberty, said: “The road to massive-scale real-time surveillance is paved with good intentions. We understand the safety issues involved but it rings alarm bells that this information may be used for targeted advertising campaigns.

"We have no problem with ANPR being used to locate vehicles whose owners the police firmly suspect of having committed an offence but it shouldn't be used as a tool of mass surveillance.”

The Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership said the aim was to “gather intelligence” to “prevent motorcycle casualties” through measures such as speed warning signs, extra police patrols and safer roadside barriers.

Partnership manager Robert Hill said he hoped to add ANPR cameras in order to work out “how these vehicles are travelling around”.

He said there were no plans to use the data for enforcement but admitted it could be used as evidence. “If the police are aware that it’s there then they would want to look at it and then obviously there are issues about whether they would want to use it as evidence,” he added.

Hill said the eight routes had been chosen to target motorcyclists. “The data will be collected on all vehicles equally on those routes. However in terms of the analysis of that data we’re going to pay particular attention to motorcycles,” he said.

“That’s why they’re on those routes. We haven’t got a traffic management issue on those routes with any other vehicles that we’re aware of.

"Why they’ve gone there is because we know there’s a casualty problem with motorcycles on those routes.

“There will be concerns about data collection but ultimately the data we are collecting on this project is around casualty reduction.”

The system has been installed on the:
• A5012 from Cromford to Ivonbrook Quarry
• A621 from Baslow to Owler Bar
• A57 Snake Pass from Glossop outskirts to Nether North Grain
• B5035 from Ashbourne outskirts to Wirksworth
• A515 from Ashbourne to Alsop-en-le-Dale
• A6 Matlock Bath from High Peak Junction to Artist’s Corner
• A54 and A537 Cat & Fiddle run from Buxton to Cat & Fiddle pub
• A5004 Long Hill from Buxton to Fernilee

Maps of all eight routes can be found in a ‘Bikers’ Guide’ printed by the council. Download it here.

MCN first revealed plans for the new surveillance technology last year when a notice appeared in the Official Journal of the European Union inviting technology firms to bid for a contract to provide ‘automatic motorcycle detection equipment and associated services’.

That notice made clear it should be possible for video cameras to be added. It said: ‘The Contract is for the supply of equipment and services in order to accurately detect motorcycles and to facilitate the automatic operation of Variable Message Signs (VMS), Video Data Capture (VDC) and a further potential option of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). A fundamental part of this project is the accurate detection of motorcyclists and the user defined triggering of VMS, VDC and ANPR.’

Noisy cycle law put in reverse

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/bronx/2009/01/07/2009-01-07_noisy_cycle_law_put_in_reverse.html

A proposed city law that could let cops confiscate noisy motorcycles has been sent back to the legal shop for retooling.

The confiscation provision in a City Council bill drew a backlash of protest e-mails from motorcyclists and biker advocacy groups to the City Council members sponsoring it.

After the Daily News published an article on the bill last month, scores of bikers complained they were being singled out for harsh punishment. Why should motorcycles be seized for making noise, while cars and trucks are not, they asked.

The bikers picked up a potent ally in Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-Queens), the deputy majority leader, who pushed for changes in the legislation.

He said that most motorcyclists are law-abiding and shouldn't be penalized for the too-noisy few.

Comrie and Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Queens), whose Public Safety Committee has jurisdiction over the bill, said Tuesday that Council lawyers and staffers have conferred on the bill with motorcycle activists.

The bike confiscation provision is likely to be changed to make it applicable only after a third violation, rather than after a second, as in the original bill, said Vallone.

A vote had been expected this week, but it has now put off until a final version of the bill is produced and another public hearing is held, according to Vallone.

Backers of the original bill said many New Yorkers are fed up with improperly muffled motorcycles that disregard the 80-decibel limit in the city's noise code.

They said current enforcement methods haven't worked because they require cops to be present to hear the noise or to monitor it with noise meters.

Also, police officials testified that chasing noisy motorcycles poses public safety problems.

The bill would have allowed cops to ticket a stopped or parked motorcycle if it didn't bear a tag stating it meets noise-control standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Motorcycles made after 1986 are required to bear the appropriate EPA tags at time of sale, and replacements parts are also required to have the right EPA tags.

Bikers contend that not all manufacturers use the EPA tags.

They also assert that loud pipes help save lives - theirs and those of other motorists and pedestrians

Which do you find better for distance driving, at times in cold weather?

I have access to a Honda VT1100c, 1995 I believe, and a late model gsxr 1100. I'll be traveling ~400 miles in cold weather. The Honda has plenty of power, but with no windscreen you get beat pretty bad at high speeds. On the gsxr you don't get so beat up, but the seating position is less comfey. Which would you take, and why?

June 12-14 Redwood Run
June 14 Booze Fighters MC San Diego Chapter BBQ, San Diego, CA

I'm planning on attending at least half of those events. Is anyone else going to be at any of them? Does anyone know of any events that aren't listed here?

Favorite places to ride in SoCal

Living in southern California is great in so many ways, but one of my favorite things is being able to ride year round. In fact I enjoy riding during the winter better then in the summer. Seeing and feeling the changing seasons is a big part of what is so appealing in riding.

I think we all have a special ride that's close to our homes where we get to see some long straightaways , banking curves, ocean drives and salt air, over the hill to a nice panoramic view of a winding road into the valley. Where's your favorite little route or take or little known trail that brings the seasons to your life?

I have a nice ride near my home which starts off West on the 90 Fwy, drop off on Culver, head towards Playa del Rey, take Vista del Mar down south and find a coffee shop in Manhattan and head back.

I see a lot of other riders on Vista del Mar, I give them all the two finger down low solute as each fellow ride passed on by.

Where do you ride?

Ride on!!

Trailers, Sidecars and Dogs

I am just starting out to learn to ride a motorbike, but I thought I would ask a hypothetical question about sidecars. Ever since I was a child, I always wanted not just a motorcycle, but a motorcycle with a sidecar. Can you get generic sidecars that attach to any motorcycle?

For that matter, how about motorcycle trailers? Are they somewhat generic in that they can be attached to any bike? I guess if I am interested in this kind of stuff, then what I REALLY want is a massive touring bike.

Also, what about putting a Rottwieler sized dog in a sidecar? Would that be inhumane? I am about to inherit a large, friendly dog. Of course, if I can't take passengers then I obviously can't take a dog either. Even if I did take a dog, it could only be in a sidecar. Logic dictates that if you yourself need a helmet and leathers to ride a motorbike, then your dog would obviously be in danger. There is also the possibility of rocks flying up from trucks and hitting your dog (or you).

However, I have seen guys on 'Chopper Trikes' with dogs.

Study shows antilocks good for motorcycles too Option is not widely available; reduces fatal crashes by 38 percent

URL: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27313063/

The Associated Press
updated 10:35 a.m. ET, Wed., Oct. 22, 2008

WASHINGTON - Antilock brakes could help motorcycle riders avoid fatal crashes, according to a study by the insurance industry.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said Wednesday that the fatal crash rate involving motorcycles equipped with optional antilock brakes, or ABS, was 38 percent lower than the rate involving similar motorcycles without the systems.

Antilock brakes, like their counterparts on cars and trucks, help motorcycle riders stop their bikes abruptly without locking up the wheels or fishtailing. The system evaluates the brake pressure multiple times per second, allowing motorcycle riders to fully brake both wheels in an emergency situation and avoid hitting the pavement.

Antilocks are more typically found on touring bikes and have been available on a limited number of motorcycles since BMW AG introduced ABS on the K100 in 1988.

“Even though adding antilocks won’t make motorcycling as safe as going by car, it’s something manufacturers can do to reduce the risk of traveling on two wheels instead of four,” said Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Rob Dingman, president and CEO of the American Motorcyclist Association, said the study shows the potential of antilock brakes, but it also underscores the need for a “long-overdue” federal study of the causes of motorcycle crashes.

“Our members would welcome an ABS option on more models, but there must be a broader strategy to reduce motorcycle accidents and fatalities that includes increased education and motorist awareness,” Dingman said.

Safety officials have been concerned about a steady rise in motorcycle deaths. More than 5,100 motorcyclists died in 2007, compared with 2,294 fatalities in 1998. The deaths have climbed as vehicle miles traveled have grown by more than 20 percent during the period and motorcycle registrations have surpassed 6 million, compared with 3.8 million in 1998.

In the report, researchers studied eight motorcycles that offer antilock brakes as an option. They found there were 6.6 fatal crashes per 10,000 registered motorcycles without antilocks in 2005-2006. The rate for the same bikes equipped with antilocks was 4.1, or 38 percent lower, during the same period.

In a second study, the IIHS found that antilock brakes appeared to reduce collision claims — insurance losses were 21 percent lower for motorcycles with antilock brakes compared with similar motorcycles without the equipment. The findings were based on a data set of 72,000 insured years of 2003-2007 model year Honda, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha bikes.

IIHS said antilocks were standard or optional equipment on about 40 motorcycles from the 2008 model year; top manufacturers include BMW, Harley-Davidson Inc., and Honda Motor Co.

ABS typically adds about $1,000 or more to the cost of a motorcycle.

Ty van Hooydonk, the Motorcycle Industry Council’s director of product communications, said ABS can be effective for some riders but it depends on factors such as road conditions, skill level and the type of riding involved.

“For a number of experienced enthusiasts out there, they’re able to stop with a non-ABS motorcycle quicker than they are with an ABS-equipped motorcycle,” van Hooydonk said. “It’s all very situational.”

Ray Zimmerman, executive director of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, said ABS could be very valuable when trying to bring a bike to a stop on slick and icy roads.

Zimmerman, of Ellisville, Mo., said he has been riding motorcycles for more than four decades and logged nearly 250,000 miles on BMW motorcycles. His ABS system has come in handy on two occasions, and he’s glad he had it.

“You keep a bike from swerving out of control one time, and it’s worth (it),” he said.

My bikes got evicted from my apartment building's courtyard. Well, sheeeeit! So I had to find an alternate place to keep them. It's a bit of a drag, having to drive and then walk there, but I put them in storage that I basically use as a garage. One benefit of them being inside an enclosed space now is the batteries somehow don't require being on the battery tender as much. I'm pleased with that, esp. since I'm not a daily rider.

I'm sure you all have an opinion about this one.

In my opinion I think they are cool, but I'm kind of a dork. Since I ride mostly in the city I believe that visibility is as important as good brakes and I think that items that wave or flutter help make you visible to other motorists. Having a flag on my bike just isn't me, but having a Mohawk on my helmet is a great way to be seen and in a good way.

I always get the funniest looks, honks, and shout outs, so I know its working....

What do you think?

how Harley does it have to be to be a Harley Davidson?

hello everyone,
i have been riding for over five years now, and i think its time to get a Harley Davidson. i have a million and one questions. unfortunately i don't know anyone who has a Harley. so i thought i would join this tribe (and a few others) to maybe chat with some cool, and, helpful people who could in lighten me in some of the dos and don'ts on HD etiquette, and some advice on buying/building my first Harley Davidson.

first question,
how Harley does it have to be to be a Harley Davidson?
if i were to buy a HD and i got a wide tire kit, or a after market larger engine
, would i have to stop calling it a Harley Davidson.
what if i was to built a bike piece by piece, how much of it would have to be Harley Davidson, how much of it could be Harley Davidson Replica, and how much could be other?
thax for spending the time on a newbie.

Do you out run your ticket?

I have had several motorcyclist tell me that they routinely run from the police, that typically the police will give up within a mile. It seemed a little crazy to me, I can just imagine what happens if they do catch you. Have you out run a ticket or know someone who does?

Are You a "Biker"?

http://www.eastsidehog.com/AreYouaBiker.htm

After riding for some 35 years and owning more bikes than I can count, I am
still a little confused when someone asks me the question, "Are you a
biker?"

Do I ride? Yes. Do I own a motorcycle? Yes. Do I saddle up often? Yes,
usually daily. Is riding a motorcycle the most important thing I do? Yes,
right behind being with my family and making a living.

There are many definitions for real biker. Many riders think being a biker
means that you ride a scooter constantly and probably don't even own a car.
Some think that only Harley riders are real bikers, while others believe
that being a club "1 %'er" is the key to the biker title.

I've also heard guys say things like, "Real bikers ride in the rain." Well,
I guess I'm not a real biker because I drive my cage when it's raining. But
I consider that an intelligence issue.

I also hear conversations that if you have a good job and make great money,
somehow you have been disqualified from being a real biker because you are
now a yuppie or a R.U.B. (rich urban biker). Well, I plead guilty again
because I have a pretty good job, and I do okay. I guess I've lost points
again on the real biker scale.

Do tattoos, outrageous haircuts or earrings get you closer to the Holy Grail
of real bikerhood? How about the folks who ride sport bikes, Gold Wings or
trikes? Are they real bikers? Can a Gold Winger ever become a real biker?
According to many so-called experts, once you get a Gold Wing, you get
busted back down to Private. Zero points on the real biker scale. What
happens to a real biker if he suddenly loses his mind and -- God forbid --
buys a British bike?

I'm sure many of you are a little like me and wonder what makes a biker and
whether or not we qualify. Do I think like a biker? Do I look like a biker?
Do I have to dress for work like I dress when I'm riding my scoot to be a
real biker? Do I make too much money to be a real biker? Do I have to put
bike parts into the dishwasher to be a real biker? Can I take my scoot to
the dealership for an oil change and still keep my Real Biker Card?

Recently, as I drove home from work, I came across a young guy pushing his
Honda cruiser down a country road. After stopping to investigate, I went
home and got my trailer and some tie-downs and came back to help this guy
get his scooter home in one piece. It was apparent early on that he wasn't a
"true biker," that is, an experienced biker. I didn't know the exact
definition of true biker, but I knew he somehow didn't qualify. He would
need to serve some time before applying for his Real Biker Membership Card.

After we got to his house and unloaded his bike, he offered payment for my
services, and I refused. He thanked me and then proceeded to tell me how he
had bought the Honda to go to Sturgis with friends and how wonderful the
experience had been. He went into his house and got some photos of his trip
to show me. He explained how exciting the whole biker experience had been,
how friendly the biker community was, and how surprised he was to feel so
welcome. He said he had recently gone through a divorce and the Sturgis
experience had rejuvenated him, served as a sort of therapy.

As he explained what had apparently been a life-changing experience, it
occurred to me that he was putting into words the whole biker experience
from the fresh point of view of someone who had just arrived. He was so
excited, it almost made me laugh out loud.

I realized he was describing what being around bikers was all about. It was
like he was re-introducing me to an old friend, a friend I had almost
forgotten about and was very happy to re-discover. I'd been around bikers
for so long I'd forgotten what gives our lifestyle such appeal. I had taken
for granted the essence of the experience that had super-charged my
Honda-riding friend.

Then he asked me if I was a biker.

Taken off guard but also responding very quickly, I said, "Yes, I am a
biker."

For the first time in my life I didn't have a problem understanding the
definition of biker. I didn't question my qualifications, brand, style or
dress. I'm not even sure I had a Harley T-Shirt on (yes, I own a Harley as
well as a Sabre).

It doesn't matter. At that moment, I understood that being a biker was that
feeling of comfort you have when enjoying a sport that celebrates the
outdoors and a free spirit. It's the feeling you get when you ride alone or
the thrill you feel when you hear 100 bikes rumble down the road. It's also
the feeling you have when you sit around the fire at night planning the
adventure for the next day. It's like those T-shirts that say, "If I have to
explain, you wouldn't understand."

The experience I had helping a newcomer to the biker world is also a part of
the real biker definition. It hit me like some sort of religious epiphany
that being a biker was not really what you looked like or what you ride or
how often you ride. It was the inner peace that you achieve when you are on
that scooter and you're a million miles from work, worry and pressure.

Real bikers are all members of a kinship with no concern for status or
wealth. Instead, they have a "Live and Let Live" philosophy, while still
watching each others' backs.

After all these years, I've finally discovered the answer to the real biker
question. If you get a shiver up your spine when a good sounding scoot goes
by, have ever stopped to help another rider in distress, or can't sleep
because you're thinking about the morning adventure, don't worry, you're a
real biker. It doesn't matter if it's a sport bike, a cruiser, or a dirt
bike. If it's got two wheels and you get that special feeling when you
saddle up, you get the membership card for life, no questions asked.

Somehow, this two-wheeled piece of steel has become a catalyst for bringing
out realness in people. So the next time you see a Gold Wing or a sport bike
go by, or you run across a broken down Honda, give the rider the respect he
or she deserves, because they probably are a real biker. My Honda friend
was. He was a real biker the minute he pulled into Sturgis and got that
special feeling.

Chain Care on the Road

Any long distance riders out there have any in the field chain clean/lube tricks?

I'm going on a 4000 mile road trip next month and will be nowhere near a garage the whole time. Besides the obvious handicap of not having a rear stand, issues that are usually simple like where to put greasy rags are turning into problems. I usually lube the chain every 500 miles or so, and give it a cleaning every other lubing. The rags from the chain lube aren't so bad, but as of right now I clean the chain with kerosene and thats something I *really* don't want to cart around with me. The spray on cleaners sound great, but my thought is that those will just drip all over the place creating more rags and an oil slick at every campsite.

Is this where a Scottoiler comes in? I'm really hesitant to drop 200 bones on something like that.

Any ideas would be cool, and much appreciated.

As I pull into the gas station on my black and orange Sportster, I am
already on the lookout.

On Pump 1 I've got a middle-aged man driving a Valiant with an OCC
sticker in the back window. Definite offender, better keep my distance.

Pump 3, a younger guy with a 4x4 Toyata truck. A safer bet than Pump 1,
but the retiree filling his Coupe DeVille at Pump 9 looks like my best
option.

I kill the motor and roll in to 8 as quiet as I can. Without getting off
my bike or removing my helmet, I pull out my wallet, shove my card into
the machine, pop the gas cap and grab the high octane nozzle.

If my tank was bigger than a canteen, I wouldn't have to do this so
often. But the man in the Cadillac is ignoring me, so it might turn out OK.

BEEP BEEP, "Error. See Cashier". Dammit.

I drop the kickstand, take off my helmet and glasses and get in line
behind Cadillac Man. He pays for his gas and buys a banana.

Who buys fruit at a gas station?

By the time the cashier straightens me out, the Caddy next to my bike is
replaced with an Expedition sporting a big giant HARLEY-DAVIDSON sticker
on the back. Shit.

I hoped this year would be different. I thought the hype was over. I
prayed that I could go this entire year without having to discuss Jesse
fucking James with some jackass American Chopper fanboy driving a rig
with a bike sticker on it.

He steps out of the vehicle and looks over at my bike, and I know all my
hopes and dreams for the 2005 riding season are fucked. He walks up to
me like I'm a hot peice of ass drinking a Manhattan alone at the bar.

"Hey man, nice bike."

That's usually how they start out.

"Thanks" I say, trying to sound polite and rude at the same time.

Obviously needing more from this conversation, he opts for the
"establish the bad guy" approach. "I almost bought one of these last
year but my wife wanted a new roof."

Sometimes it's better to say nothing. It makes people uncomfortable and
they leave. But every now and then, keeping quiet makes them start
looking over the bike and asking more annoying questions.

"That a custom exhaust?"

Well, fuck. The word "custom" has been used. I panic but can only mutter
out a "yep" before he launches into the inevitable banter that I was
trying so hard to avoid. Once they say "custom", it's basically over.

"Yeah man I was watching Orange County choppers the other day man did
you see that spider web bike man that this was sweet they like
conversation.

Pointless, just like a chopper. Especially the over-the-top ones on the
Discovery Channel. They are cartoon bikes. Choppers are the Desert Eagle
.50 of motorcycles. Big and badass and striking and different but for
all logistical and practical and resonable purposes, completely fucking
useless.

What is your worse close call? I just had my worse one so far today. I was on 495 late for work going about 95-100 which is a fairly good pace for rush hour traffic, when I started to see some warning signs to keep left. as traffic tightened up I struggled to weave through it. I was going into a curve when I noticed that the right lane was wide open, forgetting about the signs, I went for it, and as soon I pulled in to it, I realized that there was a barrior truck parked in the lane about ten car lengths ahead, which isn't much at that speed. The really bad part was that I was alread leaned over in the curve at about 45 degrees. I didn't have time to break or pull the bike up, I pushed it down further scraping my knee on the asphalt and then pulled it up in time to lane split between the barrior truck and the traffic to the left. I nearly pissed myself. Thank God I have a little 250, and not a liter bike, I doubt I could have pulled that off going much faster. In hind sight, I probably shouldn't be passing on a curve at that speed.

I don't have any real plans yet, just an idea. I was thinking that I'd just cruise out there with my bag and sleep pad, some clothes and a bit of food and wing it. I might make a reservation at a hostel or campground.

This is not a hiking trip, this is a road trip. There might be something I want to see that requires hiking to but only if it's relatively easy and quick.

If you're interested drop me an email. Since tribe has been wonky lately send it to thrilljunkie@usa.net

Pointers for buying my first bike...

So I'm looking to get a used bike and hoping to spend no more than about $2500. Is this doable?

I'm not looking for something sporty, just something to get around cheaply (i.e. good gas mileage), with minimal things to carry. Also I want it to be something that it won't be impossible to find parts for, and that I can learn to work on. Also something safe and comfortable to ride, I don't need a lot of space to put things, just a back back.

Is that a realistic price-range to be looking for a decent bike?

I was thinking something like this: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/mcy/736778396.html

Does anyone have any pointers about what I should be looking for, and what I should be avoiding?

Oakland PD's Harleys have a new roar

Just a direct copy-n-paste job from the San Francisco Chronicle:

Over in Oakland they like it loud - so loud that all 45 of the Police Department's Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been equipped with shiny new tailpipes, at a cost of $500 apiece, to rev up their roar.

It seems the cops just didn't feel safe on toned-down bikes.

"There's an old motorcycle adage that you are heard before you are seen," said Deputy Chief Dave Kozicki, explaining the department's decision to toss the bikes' muted factory-issued mufflers in favor of the more high-volume pipes.

Kozicki cited an accident three months ago in which an Oakland officer riding a toned-down cycle was struck by a motorist who said he hadn't heard the officer approaching.

But some City Hall insiders, as well as motorcycle cops elsewhere, said the safety argument is a stretch.

Even the folks at the national Motorcycle Industry Council, which represents all the big bike manufacturers, were unaware of any safety benefits from louder mufflers.

"We encourage all motorcycle riders to keep the original low sound levels that meet the ... federal sound limit of 80 decibels," said industry spokesman Mike Mount. "It would seem counterintuitive that a law enforcement agency would go against federal standards."

Ironically, it was just a short time back that Oakland police were called upon to crack down on noisy motorists who had modified their auto mufflers to make a whistling screech. The "whistle tip" pipes were eventually outlawed under state law.

Oakland's cops had a long tradition of riding their Harley-Davidsons with the modified, louder tail pipes, earning them the nickname "Rolling Thunder." But after an officer complained about a loss of hearing and others around town questioned whether the police force was violating the very noise standards it was supposed to enforce, the department brass ordered a switch to the quieter stock mufflers.

According to Kozicki, the decibel drop sparked a chorus of complaints from other officers, who said they felt less safe.

So last year the department launched a $1,200 study in conjunction with the city's risk management division to determine whether A) the louder motorcycles contributed to officers' safety, B) were detrimental to their hearing, and C) complied with noise standards.

Kozicki acknowledged that whatever safety-related findings the study produced were largely anecdotal. Still, after everything was taken into consideration, the department concluded "it was in the best interest of the officers to put more-audible pipes back on," Kozicki said.

Hence, all 30 of the department's Harleys were sent down to the central maintenance yard for a muffler makeover, at a cost of about $15,000, according to City Hall insiders. Another 15 newly purchased motorcycles were ordered with the louder pipes, though at no extra charge.

Oakland officials acknowledge that the noisy pipes, when tested, averaged 93 decibels - well above the federal legal noise limit, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.

But city Finance Director Bill Nolan, who oversees the risk management division, isn't alarmed.

"If they were riding eight straight hours, it would be a problem," he said. "But they aren't."

picking up your bike

I recently found this which I found quite interesting

http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/82/123/

Now, I want to get a bike that I can pick up. I can lift a 150lb sand bag 100 ft to give you the idea of my ability. What range of weight class should I be looking for?

Touring bikes are out of the question, but what about a 500lb bike, what is the lift weight on that?

Or do the above techniques make it so you are using the fulcrum of the bike and hence weight is not that much of an issue?

Back in Miami it was so common to see guys on the roadside who couldn't lift their bikes, oh man. tsk tsk...

Tire pressure question

Do you run your tire pressure according to bike specs or tire specs? I've heard two schools of thought on this.

One is that you should set it according the bike manufacturers recommendations. The other is that you should set pressure according to whats printed on the tire since tire technology is always changing and because the bike makers numbers are for stock tires only.

What are your thoughts on this? Also, what's lead to your views?

Driver who killed motorcyclist gets 14 years

DAYTONA BEACH -- The driver of a van that collided with a popular Ormond Beach motorcycle enthusiast last year in the Jacksonville area, killing him, was sentenced to 14 years in prison Thursday.

Stanislaw Kropiewnicki, 55, of St. Augustine will be on community control for one year when he gets out of prison. He pleaded no contest in Circuit Court in St. Augustine to DUI manslaughter in the Feb. 10, 2007, crash that killed LaVerne Francis "Ivy" Ivis, 63, a retired Delta Airlines captain.

"It was extremely difficult," Ivis' widow, Anne Ivis, said of Thursday's hearing. "But I'm glad the court gave him what I would consider maximum sentence."

Her husband, survived by herself, a daughter, Natalie, 17, and two stepsons, was a decorated fighter pilot during the Vietnam War who enjoyed riding BMW sport touring motorcycles.

"The motorcycles reminded him of his flying days," Anne Ivis said.

"Ivy," as he was called, was riding that day with a friend. He had just turned onto County Road 210 in St. Johns County behind a truck at 11:15 a.m. Kropiewnicki crossed into his lane and slammed into him, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ivis, who had logged 200,000 miles on his BMW, wore a helmet, gloves and other safety gear, family members said. Kropiewnicki suffered minor injuries and was not wearing a seat belt.

Adding to the shock for Ivis' survivors was the fact that he always rode with safety in mind.

"Ivy never rode at night because he didn't want to ride with drunks on the road," his widow said. "This man was all about safety."

"There's nothing we're happy about," she said of Kropiewnicki's sentence. "It's just something that needed to be done."

Where do you buy your tires? Which tires do you like, etc..?

My Bridgestone BT020, in the rear, is getting close to replacement time. It has 4,500 miles on it, and came as OEM mounted on my Triumph Sprint ST. My guess is that I will get 5,500 miles out of it. I would describe my riding as moderately aggressive. The Bridgestones have been very neutral tires, sticky enough for me, and comfortable. However, I will not by another Bridgestone because of the way the company handled the Ford SUV rollover events. I usually cruise between 80-90 mph when I commute per work about 50 miles r/t per day. In the three months I have had the bike, it has been in the twisties for about 400 miles worth of curvy road. I have averaged 47.3 mpg, according to the bike's computer.

Right now I am tending toward the Michelin Pilot Power or Power 2CT as a replacement because I hear that they are super sticky and that they wear better (more miles) than most of the comparable performers. On the other hand, they are a bit pricey, and I like to eat something other than Ramen.
Airbag motorcycle Jackets

Good idea - Bad Idea ?

Have you ever wondered how safe or unsafe riding can be?

If there is safer technology should you wear it?

Ask a 25 years old male in 1970 if you should wear a seat belt in a car and they would call you a pansy. Ask any 25 year old today, in 2008, if you should wear a seat belt and they think you are stupid not too.

This year I decided that my $125 FieldSheer motorcycle jacket has reached its end. I have to say its been a pretty good jacket, but after 1 1/2 years of Sun, Winds, and dirt its ready to retire. I figured I would get the BMW Santiago year round jacket. I have ready many good things about this jacket, it looks pretty sharp, its designed by BMW, CE armor, comfortable, etc... They are expensive so I wanted to look around for what else I could get $600 - $800 jacket.

In the past I have found that while leather provides great abrasion protection, but they can be very HOT. and since I live in SoCal, its usually hot.( I love the few cool days we get to for a long canyon ride. )

So I found a couple companies that are making advances in "airbag" jacket technologies.

http://www.hit-air.com/english/main.html

Since I also sail I have seen self inflating life jackets that use CO2 cartridges to inflate when you hit the water. So I know the technology works. The question is do Airbag motorcycle jackets REALLY work? Is there anyone out there who wears an airbag jacket every time they ride?

Do you think airbag jackets will become the mandatory?

Would you wear one if it saved your lift in an accident so you could ride another day?

I'd like to hear from some rides who are wearing hit-air , motoair, or impact jackets. If you haven't ever hear of airbag motorcycle jacket technology check out these sites.

http://www.motoair.com/
http://www.impactjackets.com/
http://www.hit-air.com/english/main.html

Cheers

Speaking of CA cell phone laws

Here's a letter I sent to my co-workers a while back. Perhaps there's some info in it that people may find useful.

==================================================

Hi folks,

This is just a reminder that as of July 1st, using a cell phone handset
will be illegal in California, and drivers can be pulled over and
ticketed for the offense. Beyond whether or not talking on a cell phone
is legal, it has been shown in multiple studies that cell phone usage,
with or without a headset, results in a level of driver impairment as
bad as or worse than driving while intoxicated. It also is an extremely
frequent cause of injury accidents. Since many of us have to commute
some distance as part of our work, it's important to be aware of these
risks.

Not only is cell phone use while driving extremely dangerous, but it
causes traffic problems for everyone on the road - performance of
drivers on the phone decreases as traffic density increases, causing
more congestion and pollution.

While the new law doesn't address as much as it could, it is a start,
and a good opportunity to raise awareness about the danger of driving
while performing distracting tasks like talking on the phone (or being
intoxicated, for that matter). It really is important to just pull over
to take a call, or wait until you've arrived. Start practicing now,
before it's illegal!

I've provided further information below.

The DMV faq on the new law:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/cellularphonelaws/index.htm

Studies by Strayer, et al on inattention blindness, intoxication
and cell phone use (summary article and full paper). This is
one of the most recent in a string of studies on the topic:

http://web.utah.edu/unews/releases/03/jan/cellphone.html
http://www.hfes.org/web/pubpages/celldrunk.pdf

NHTSA report on accident causes:

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nrd-12/100CarPhase1Report.pdf

Further analysis of crash causes:

Women who ride.....

I own a Harley and I use it as a daily driver if the weather is good.

I get really interesting reactions. People seem to 'categorize' me and feel comfortable proclaiming I either do or do not look like a 'biker bitch'.

I generally just leave it alone, as a subject, but I don't hide that I ride. The weather is turning nice, so I came in on my bike today, at work. People feel a need to talk about it. They warn me about gangs. Tell me I look a certain part. Or don't. They lecture me about my skull cap not being sufficient. They comment on my footwear, in case I've changed out of boots to work shoes. They wonder how my boyfriend and my son feel about it. They wonder why I ride alone. It's interesting to them how I fit on my bike, what it looks like, how I ride, where I ride, and why I ride. I'm a fairly small woman, so people are probably trying to protect me.

But they seem to think I'm some hardass, too. Like suddenly because I ride, I'm some badass biker partier who does drugs. I don't do drugs. They reference partying or bike events. I tell them I don't know, I'm just riding in because the weather's nice, riding home to let dogs out for lunch, then going home at the end of the day. I might ride along the river later, but otherwise, I've got to sleep like them.

My coworkers are really great. But they remind me, a lot of people think that anyone who rides a bike, especially a custom Harley, is some biker gangster. We're not. And I should 'be careful'. I am. We just like the feeling of the freedom of the road.

The weather here last summer was pretty shitty, on and off. We had an unusually short and crappy fall. Winter was ghastly, and we had snow clear into April, which is unheard of. Now the weather is nice. Oh, thank god! For the first time, we have beautiful weather! There were more bikes on the road last night and tonight, and probably tomorrow, than there have been in a year! Maybe two! My man is feeling like a Harley widow.

We just enjoy how it feels to drive and feel the breeze on our skin and in our hair. You riders get it. People who buy convertibles want to get it, but are a little afraid. Those who open windows and crank the music want it too, but they never will. When you gear up, smirk at the world, and feel the power and unity between you and your bike, and see and smell the world around you, do you not all feel a sense of release?

I think we riders have it going on. We know how to find our bliss and we aren't afraid of it. Others watch us and wonder what it would be like, or wish they had the nerve, but we know....

It is the bomb.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-05-26-stunters_N.htm?csp=1

By William M. Welch, USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES — Sgt. John Lago is cruising the Hollywood Freeway when his radio carries the call of another California Highway Patrol officer who has tried to pull over a motorcyclist, only to see him race off at high speed.
Both troopers give chase, skillfully picking their way through 10 p.m. weeknight traffic at 120 mph. They radio for a helicopter backup, but the aircraft is too far away. In only minutes, tonight's outcome is clear: The rider of the agile, 600cc Honda sportbike has outrun them.

"Bummer," Lago says. "I hate it when we lose a chase because you know the guy's going (to go) on MySpace and brag he outran the cops. It's just going to encourage more knuckleheads."

While the CHP officers often apprehend their targets, tonight's disappointment is all too common for this team. In squad cars and on powerful BMW motorcycles of their own, these officers go after what they regard as a growing problem on the nation's highways — riders of high-performance motorcycles who use public roads for triple-digit speeds or perilous stunts such as riding while standing or on one wheel.

"We're not going to tolerate their behavior," says Lago, himself a motorcycle rider. "They're ruining it for everyone else."

Across the USA, reckless motorcycle "stunters," as the riders like to call themselves, are being targeted as a hazard to themselves and others.

Motorcycle deaths climbed from 3,034 in 2002 to 4,493 in 2006, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The largest 10-year age group of rider fatalities is 20- to 29-year-olds. Though most are not stunters, many states have reported problems with stunters and are proposing laws to deter them.

Florida this month passed legislation to make it illegal for a motorcyclist to lift a wheel off the ground, called a wheelie, or to place license plates on a hinged frame that violators use to flip their tag out of sight and avoid identification. Florida state Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, pushed for the law in response to complaints about bikes speeding at 136 mph, popping wheelies and hiding tags.

In Kansas City, police from several agencies in the region met in June to discuss what to do.

"It's getting worse," Capt. Dek Kruger of the Kansas Highway Patrol told The Kansas City Star. "Aggressive motorcycle driving is an issue throughout the metro area. We're seeing 'em popping wheelies on the interstates and performing stunts on the street."

In Oregon, state police arrested a motorcyclist after a chase in which the biker hit 164 mph — as recorded by a video camera that the motorcyclist had pointed at his own speedometer.

The American Motorcyclist Association, a national organization based in Ohio, has opposed new penalties against reckless motorcyclists because it says such penalties should apply to reckless automobile drivers, too. AMA lobbyist Imre Szauter said similar efforts to crack down on motorcyclists fell short this year in California and Missouri.

"We will not defend public reckless operation," Szauter says. "That kind of riding needs to be done on the track."

While the image of Harley-Davidson-riding gangs of outlaw motorcyclists dies hard, it is the modern super-capable sportbikes, most imported from Japan or Europe, that are the focus of law enforcement's attention, Lago said.

One reason is the performance. For $10,000 a buyer can get a sportbike capable of 180 mph even before any hot-rodding work.

The Internet is a factor as well. On websites and forums riders post photos and videos of their exploits. Lago says he and other law officers regularly read Los Angeles sportbike websites to gain intelligence on when and where bikers plan get-togethers.

At a recent late-night gathering in a parking lot in Hollywood, several hundred riders showed off their bikes and club names such as "Fearless Stunters," "Law Breakerz" and "Suicide Tribe." One cycle was equipped with multiple video screens and cameras, allowing the rider to both show stunt videos and record his own.

At another lot in Calabasas in the San Fernando Valley, rider Thad Wiltz, 56, of Van Nuys, demonstrated that the riders are not all kids.

He displayed his Suzuki Hayabusa, a 1340cc superbike that he had hopped up with a turbocharger, giving it, he says, 380 horsepower. "I go to the drag strip with it," he says. "It can do 178 mph in the quarter mile."

Ryan Suchanek, 27, of Milton, Wis., has made stunting his profession. With his crew called "VerticalMischief," he performs all over the world and sells DVDs of his stunts. He lost his left leg when he collided with a car in October. He still performs, wearing shorts to show off his metal prosthetic limb.

"I'm not going to lie. I started (stunt) riding on the street. As long as you're doing it safe and not affecting other people, I don't see a huge problem with it — as long as it is controlled," he says.

"As long as they make bikes that can pop wheelies, we're going to be popping wheelies."

That's not what Lago likes to hear. In California, he says, sportbikers have shut down entire freeways with hundreds of riders slowing traffic and clearing lanes for stunters. In 2006, the CHP arrested 11 leaders of a group that hired its own helicopter to videotape just such a stunt, he said.

On another recent night, Lago and his team found themselves surrounded by more than 100 sportbikers who prevented officers from arresting speeding riders.

"It's like a swarm of bees — they surround you," he says. "It was so out of control I couldn't believe it."

I had the idea of hitch-hiking to Sturgis this year. I already did Burning Man last year so Sturgis is the next event to scratch off my list. Do bikers pick-up hitch-hikers or is that laughable?

The Deadly Dozen: 12 Motorcycle Safety Myths and MisconceptionsToday

http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/streetsurvival/dangerous_motorcycle_safety_myths/index.html

When science meets urban legend and imperfect logic, some of the "facts" motorcyclists think they "know" about motorcycle safety, crashes, and riding turn out to be dangerous myths and misconceptions. From the February 2006 issue of Motorcycle Cruiser magazine. By Art Friedman.

Get a group of motorcyclists talking about crashes and safety, and you will almost certainly hear some of them—popular misconceptions, incorrect assumptions, urban legends, and intuitive explanations about motorcycle safety that turn out to be wrong when you actually check out the facts. The problem is that believing these misconceptions can increase your chances of being involved in an accident or getting hurt when you do crash.

Maybe you know BS when you hear it, but maybe you have heard some myths repeated so often or by people whose expertise you respect that you think they are actually true. Unfortunately, there are a lot of motorcyclists who do believe them. We thought that some of these fallacies should be brought out into the light of day so that riders have the right information upon which to make informed riding-safety decisions. We also hope it will keep more motorcyclists from repeating such misconceptions to riders who turn to them for advice.

These are the Deadly Dozen, the motorcycle safety myths and urban legends ones that we hear most frequently.

Myth 1: Other Drivers Don't Care About Motorcyclists

It may seem hard to believe at times, but other drivers almost never actually want to hit you. Most of those near-misses come about because they don't always know you are there, even when you are right in front of them, seemingly in plain view. You can be obscured or completely hidden by glare, by other things on or along the road, by the cars roof pillars, the handicap hangtag, or by other traffic. Of course, not all drivers "think motorcycles" and make the effort to look that extra bit harder to see if there might be a motorcyclist hidden by that obscuration or in their blind spot.

Instead of assuming that they will ignore you even when they see you, you should help make it easier for drivers to spot you, especially as the population ages and more drivers have greater difficulty in picking you out. To overcome the fact that you might be hard to see and harder to notice, wear bright colors, especially on your helmet and jacket. Run your high beam during the day. Think about things that can hide you and your bike from other drivers, things that can be as common as the sun behind you, the car ahead in the next lane, or a couple of roadside poles that line up on the driver's line of sight toward you. Make an effort to ride in or move to a location where drivers with potentially conflicting courses can see you before they stray your way.

Myth 2: Loud Pipes Save Lives

Yeah, there are a few situations—like where you are right next to a driver with his window down who is about the to change lanes—where full-time noise-makers might help a driver notice you, but all that noise directed rearward doesn't do much in the most common and much more dangerous conflict where a car turns in front of you. Maybe it's the fatigue caused by the noise, maybe it's the attitudes of riders who insist on making annoying noise, or perhaps loud bikes annoy enough drivers to make them aggressive. Whatever the reason, the research shows that bikes with modified exhaust systems crash more frequently than those with stock pipes. If you really want to save lives, turn to a loud jacket or a bright helmet color, which have been proven to do the job. Or install a louder horn. Otherwise, just shut up.

Myth 3: Motorcycle Helmets Break Necks

It seems logical—you put more weight out there on the end of your neck and when you get thrown off the bike, that extra weight will create more pendulum force on your neck. Turns out, it doesn't work that way. In fact, the energy-absorbing qualities of a DOT motorcycle helmet also absorb the energy that breaks riders' necks in impacts. Studies show that helmeted motorcyclists actually suffer fewer neck injuries when they crash compared to riders who crash without helmets.

Myth 4: Helmets Block Your Ability to See or Hear Danger

The thing you learn when you dig into the research is that motorcycle riders who use helmets crash less frequently than those who don't. Maybe that happens because motorcyclists who decide to wear helmets have a better or more realistic attitude about riding. Maybe it's because putting on a helmet is a reminder that what you are about to do can be dangerous and the act of accepting protection puts you in the right mindset. Maybe it's because a helmet provides eye protection and cuts down wind noise so you can actually see and hear better. Maybe its because, by cutting wind pressure and noise, a helmet reduces fatigue. Whatever the reasons, wearing a helmet clearly does not increase a motorcyclist's risk of having an accident and wearing one correlates to reduced likelihood of an accident.

Myth 5: A Helmet Won't Help in Most Crashes

People look at the seemingly low impact speeds used in motorcycle-helmet testing and assume that if you are going faster than that, the helmet will no longer be up to the job. That ignores a few critical facts:

Most accidents happen at relatively low speeds.
Most of the impact energy is usually vertical—the distance your head falls until it hits.
Helmets (or at least helmets that meet DOT standards) perform spectacular life-saving feats at impact speeds far above those used in testing.
When a helmeted rider suffers a fatal head injury, it frequently doesn't matter, because, to hit hard enough to sustain that fatal injury, he sustained multiple additional fatal injuries to other parts of his body. In other words, the fact that the helmet didn't prevent the head injury was of no consequence.
The numbers clearly say that riders using DOT helmets simply survive crashes more successfully than those without them.

Myth 6: A Helmet Will Leave You Brain Damaged in an Crash When You Would Have Simply Died

Of course that's possible—your helmet attenuates the impact energy enough to keep the injury from being fatal but not enough to keep all of your eggs from getting scrambled. However, that's rare, and if you hit that hard, you are likely to get killed by some other injury. It's actually the un-helmeted rider who is likely to cross from animal to vegetable kingdom, and often from a relatively minor impact that would have damaged nothing but his ego if he'd been wearing a DOT helmet.

Myth 7: A Skilled Rider Should Be Able to Handle Almost Any Situation

The sharpest, most skilled motorcyclist in the world isn't going to be up to the task when a car turns or pulls out in front of him a short distance ahead and stops directly in his path broadside. Believing that your superior skills will keep you of trouble is a pipe dream, even if they are as good as you think. No matter how skilled you are, it's better to ride to avoid situations that can turn ugly. Slow down, scan farther ahead, and think strategically. And dress for the crash.

Myth 8: If You Are Going to Crash, Lay It Down

I suspect this line was developed by riders to explain why they ended up flat-side-down while trying to avoid a crash. They over-braked or otherwise lost control, then tried to explain the crash away as intentional and tried to make it sound like it wasn't a crash at all. Maybe motorcycle brakes once were so bad that you could stop better off your bike while sliding or tumbling. If so, that hasn't been true for decades. You can scrub off much more speed before and there be going slower at impact with effective braking than you will sliding down the road on your butt. And if you are still on the bike, you might get thrown over the car you collide with, avoiding an impact with your body. If you slide into a car while you are on the ground, you either have a hard stop against it or end up wedged under it. Remember that the phrase "I laid 'er down to avoid a crash" is an oxymoron, often repeated by some other kind of moron.

The only events where being on the ground might leave you better off are: 1) on an elevated roadway where going over the guardrail will cause you to fall a long way, or 2) in that situation you see occasionally in movies, where the motorcyclist slides under a semi trailer without touching it. That's a good trick if the truck is moving.

Myth 9: One Beer Won't Hurt

Maybe not while you are drinking it, but if you get on your motorcycle after that, the effects of a single beer can get you hurt for life. No matter how unaffected you are sure you are, all the studies say differently. You increase your risk to yourself and to others when you drink and hit the road. Also, as you age, your metabolism slows down, and those "coupla drinks" you had last night may still be affecting you when you hit the road the next morning.

Myth 10: It's Better to Stay in Your Lane than Split Lanes

In most parts of the world, motorcycles split lanes all the time, everywhere traffic is heavy. Here in the U.S., people often act as if lane-splitting is insane. But when someone actually studied it in the only place in the U.S. where it's legal (California), they discovered it's actually slightly safer than staying in the lane in heavy, slow-moving traffic. Still many motorcyclists berate others who do it, when they should in fact be endorsing it.

Myth 11: I'm Safer on the Street than on an Interstate

The thinking here must be that slower is safer, but that's only really true after the accident begins. Controlled-access roadways are inherently safer because all the traffic is going the same way, and there are no side streets from which someone can pop into your path, no pedestrians, and, often, less roadside "furniture" to hit if you depart the roadway. Running down the road at 70 mph side-by-sidewall with the whirling wheels of a semi may feel hairy, but you are actually safer than at half that speed on a city street or even a country road.

Myth 12: A Skilled Rider Can Stop Better with Conventional Brakes than with Anti-Lock Brakes

Extensive testing done recently disproves this popular notion. Even on clean, dry, flat pavement, skilled, experienced riders (who did hundreds of panic stops for the testing on outrigger-equipped motorcycles) stopped in less distance with anti-lock brakes (ABS) than with conventional or linked braking systems. Though the tests didn't include samples on surfaces with slick, dirty or wet spots, ABS certainly would have performed even better under those conditions while eliminating much of the risk of crashing.

The other cool thing about ABS on a motorcycle is that allows you to safely practice panic stops without risking a crash caused by lock-up.

Anyway, the next time tells you that he had to "lay it down" or that green bikes crash more than purple ones, you can nod and snicker internally or challenge them. Just don't base your own riding choices on what other people assume unless their is some solid science to back it up.

Is it a Heart Attack or a Motorcycle Crash?

Vicki Sanfelipo, RN/EMT – Director Accident Scene Management, Inc.

I am very concerned about motorcyclist’s well-being. I’ve been riding for well over 20 years and used to be able to enjoy the ride without knowing how vulnerable I was. I’m not talking about protective gear or the fact that we are not surrounded by metal. I’m talking about what happens in the event we go down. Bikers are at much higher risk of dying in the event of a crash.

According to NHTSA’s 2007 Recent Trends in Motorcycle Crashes: “In 2005, motorcycles made up 2.5 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States and accounted for only 0.4 percent of all vehicle miles traveled (VMT). However, in the same year, motorcyclists accounted for 10.5 percent of total traffic fatalities. Per 100,000 registered vehicles, the fatality rate for motorcyclists (73.12) in 2005 was 5.4 times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants (13.64). Per vehicle mile traveled in 2005, motorcyclists (42.27) were about 37 times as likely as passenger car occupants (1.14) to die in motor vehicle traffic crashes.”

While NHTSA statistics can be in question without other stats to point to, their statistics show an alarming trend. Even if slightly off this is STILL alarming! We (motorcyclists) must not accept the fact that 10.5 % of motor vehicle fatalities are motorcycle related. I have been tracking these statistics for 12 years and they have not changed significantly. While we have put all of our eggs into one basket by concentrating on avoiding the crash in the first place, treatment after the crash occurs has largely been ignored. It not only has been ignored by motorcyclists, it’s been ignored by the Emergency Medical System (EMS) as well! While avoiding the crash in the first place is extremely important, all of our efforts have not significantly changed the number of motorcycle related crashes. (NHTSA - 93Motorcycles{1}).

I recently toured a 911 dispatch center. I asked what advice they would give for a motorcyclist who was not breathing and had a full face helmet on. They said they would recommend that the caller pump on the chest, up to 300 times per minute. I asked a group of 50 motorcyclists how they would treat a motorcyclist who wasn’t breathing and was unconscious. They said THEY would open the airway (head tilt/chin lift) and do chest compressions. I polled EMTs. 75% were not “comfortable” with the jaw thrust method of opening a person’s airway while keeping the neck straight and 60% had not learned helmet removal as part of their training.

So much needs to be done in the area of Motorcycle Trauma Treatment that I am dumbfounded we have actually survived! While motorcycle rider training and share the road programs should continue in order to prevent the crash in the first place, proper care and treatment after the fact must be addressed in order to reduce the 10.5% of serious injuries and fatalities motorcyclists suffer. The most likely person to be at the scene of a motorcycle crash is another motorcyclist. Treatment can start right away if we are trained in proper care. In the event that another trained motorcyclist is not there, we want to know that advice given by the 911 dispatcher is correct. When professionals arrive we want to rest assured that they can provide proper care as well.

The American Heart Association recently came out with the recommendation that Chest Compressions only with minimal interruptions has increased survival rates in victims of witnessed cardiac arrest. This has sparked much media attention. For years, CPR was thought to be the “cure all” for anyone who collapsed for any reason and was not thought to be breathing. There was no clear distinction between trauma and heart attack/cardiac arrest other than an occasional mention of using jaw thrust for someone who might have a neck injury. In the past few years, the American Heart Association has obviously moved away from trauma and is concentrating more on their actual purpose (survival rates of cardiac arrest) vs. survival rates of Trauma. The problem with this is that the general public and even medical professionals have not made the separation.

Both Head Tilt Chin Lift and pumping on the chest are the wrong things to do in a trauma unless Jaw Thrust and Bleeding control measures have not been effective. A Motorcyclist who has crashed so significantly that they are no longer breathing should be highly suspected as a person with high cervical spine neck injury. Jaw Thrust Rescue Breathing keeps the neck straight while lifting the tongue off the back of the throat which is the most likely reason that they are not breathing. Once breathing has been established, circulation should be considered. In trauma, the most likely reasons for loss of circulation is bleeding, not pump failure like in cardiac arrest. Imagine that you have someone who is bleeding and you now start pumping on the chest. You will just help them bleed out faster!

So what can we do? It’s time to take control of our own fate. Helmet removal training is not enough, CPR is not enough, and First Aid is not enough.

1.) Bystander Assistance Trauma training by motorcyclists is the BEST way to start proper care immediately. See www.accidentscene.org to find classes or get more information.

2.) We need to get the attention of the EMS and insist that they give proper advice as well as being certain that they are properly trained in motorcycle specific care from First Responder level to Paramedic. Write to your legislators asking them to contact the US DOT to request that they work with Accident Scene Management, Inc. (ASMI) to develop a module on motorcycle trauma as part of Basic EMT training (currently they only mention helmet removal, but even that is not required).

3.) Get this word out. Reprint this article in your newsletters.

4.) Help get ASMI training in all states and available to all bikers. Encourage Motorcycle groups and organizations to make a donation to ASMI which is leading the way in this topic. ASMI is in 26 states but our goal is to be in every state some day. Because we are so motorcycle specific we are not eligible for most grants. We depend on motorcyclists to help us achieve our goals.

Friday night around 11:00pm I was headed home - about a twenty mile ride. I had recently seen deer out and about on my normal route home, so I decided to take another road; a bit wider, less curves.
Sure as hell, about five miles from home, a deer jumped out in front of me and I hit it.
I woke up in the hospital with a major concussion, two broken teeth, road rash (even though I was fully leathered) a broken elbow and a broken foot. Damn lucky it wasn't worse.

PLEASE everybody, take your protective gear seriously. Helmet, leathers, gloves and boots are the MINIMUM I will ride with now. Regardless of the weather, I'm wearing it all!

Be safe.

I had one back in high school, but it has been years since I have be on one. So I am looking for a beat up, ugly bike for under $800 and under 500ccs. Craigslist and cycletrader have not been of any help in finding cheap ones. Any other places I can look?

The three year test.

According to the H.U.R.T report your most likely to get into an accident in your first six months and again at the three year mark. No real explination is offered as to why ones chances decrease after six months and rise again two and half years later. The idea that we are likely to get into accident in the first six months is easy to understand, it's just a matter of inexperience. But why the three year mark? Maybe its because most riders get their second bike somewhere around the three year mark, and may not be able to translate properly the skills they gained on one bike to another. Or perhaps it is because as a rider increases in skill he increases in risk acceptance and the three year mark is really the test, a time at which your skill and confidence is at its pinnacle, a time when you will test your self and find your limits, and for many the limits are found the hard way. I believe this is true. I've been riding for a about a year now, when I started, I was overly cautious about everything. I drove carefully and ridgedly adhered to reasonable practices, driving safely at the speed of traffic and avoiding lane changes. but now after a year, I find myself trusting in my ability to manuvere and predict the traffic. My ride to work has become more of a slolem course weaving around traffic at speed. I can't help it, I know I can do it, so I do. I beleive those that pass the three year test are those whose skill matches their confidence, and some are simply destined to fail, hopefully it's not me, or you!

Hiya! Just beginning to learn how to ride and bought a '93 Yamaha Seca II. I hope to find a good mechanic that I can take it to for tune-up, over-all assessment and ongoing maintenance. In or near Oakland is preferred. Can anyone make a recommendation?
respek,

It's in pretty bad shape. Big "U" seam at back is split pretty far. Coupla' tears here and there of differing sizes. Other than the patchwork duct-tape solution, is there a reasonable way to repair these for an interim, until I do The Right Thing?
