Hi,
I was just wondering if any of you have had rabbits that try to eat your carpets and if so, how have you successfully stopped them from doing so? We've just moved from a lamenate floored house to a carpeted one. Our rabbit seems to be settling in well (he's realised how much faster he can run now and is doing a lot more binkies too!) however he keeps pulling at the carpets, trying to eat the carpet fibres. Obviously this is not good for him and we try and stop him whenever we are here, but I'm worried he may still do this when we are not around. Any ideas or success stories would be greatly appreciated! He's about 6 years old and a well trained little many apart from this, though he does believe he is the Alpha male of the house!
I hope all of you and your bunnies are well.
Thanx

Re: Carpet eating
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 6:02 PMWe have berber carpet in our buns "Bink-a-torium" (excercise room) and one of our bunnies just loves to rip and pull at any fabric that is on the floor like a towel and such, when he does that he makes sure to get his lower teeth into the carpet as well as having the towel in there too....... we have to stop him from doing this because he does manage to break some of the loops of the berber. The only way we can distract him from doing this is make sure he has plenty of toys, wood, sisal balls, toilet paper tubes, etc strewn about so that he can chew on those.
The other thing that our bunnies love is having a tent in their play area, we use two large cardboard apple or produce boxes that we get free from Costco, because they are very sturdy and have exit and entry holes, then we cover the boxes with a large fleece blanket so that it drapes all around the boxes. They LOVE this set up, and will run in and out and around the boxes under the blanket at full speed then they come out and jump on top.
We supervise our buns when they are in the binkyroom so we know if they are munching on the rug, but if you have wall to wall carpet and it has more of a shag pile to it you might want to cover it with a berber carpet remanent, or if you own the house remove the carpet..... I know that is kind of a drastic solution but bunnies love to do what is not good for them. Boy, do they love to do what is not good for them!!!
