Hi there,
So i am going to embrace Shamanism. I have seen a few sites offering workshops etc, but would like advice as to where one should start when wanting to learn. Is there a book/teacher you can recommend? I am in the bay area, so if anyone knows of any centers that have classes etc that would be great,
Many thanks!

Fri, January 25, 2008 - 8:48 PMyou've got to narrow the field a bit and find what speaks to you, i'd say.
there's so many offshoots.
there's the plant realm, native american, paganism, airy fairy, mayan, egyptian, tibetan, amazonian, lapland, the list goes on
1st book i'd recommend is secrets of the talking jaguar, for a good understanding of the commitment/responsibilities... and you can actually skip through to the part where he arrives in guatemala.

where to go and what to do.............
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 1:51 PMfollow your heart... follow nature. heal yourself.... then others, no fear, just love, its a journey, have as many exsperiences as possible and meet amazing people, wake up and let the teachings just come to you. Its a wonderful process.
my great grandmother and my great great great grandmother were shamanic women. And I was fortunate enouh to spend alot of time with m great grandmother. But what Iv learned so far is ti litterally open and heal yourself and love yourself and the most amazin exsperiemces in the wilderness with whales, orcas and cougars and bears. So wonderful.
I also recomend that if you are serious you need to pack up all of you stuff riht now
get your pass part
then go to kayak.com and buy a cheap ticket to vancouver island and bring your traveling shoes/ hiking boots, a journal, underware, long johns, gorted jacket and pants, buy a lighter and bring a swiss army knife ad boom good to go. Then follw your heart aroung there for a bit, north south east and west, and you shal find some special things and lean some frealen cool things and become the healer you already are!
sweet! im out!

Re: one more thing..........
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 2:38 PMI really recommend The World Of Shamanism by Peter Walsh, it has really opened up alot for me in terms of having some clarity and perspective about the practice of shamanism.
Also, one thing to keep in mind, that alot of others have said, is that shamanism as a healing art consists of the practitioner having a direct experience with God/Nature/Guides etc, with their own inner resources to guide them from within. Having teachers to guide you I feel is also important, because the shaman is the axis mundi between the world of spirt and earth, which is very powerful yet can be quite treacherous too. I certainly have some "psychic" scars from travelling the axis mundi unsupervised. Experience is knowledge, but I wouldn't recommend walking into the worlds of ether without truly feeling safe and secure in body and mind. I have also witnessed a Reiki healing where the receiver was suffering from a very powerful form of posession and required my teacher to step in and release her from this entity. The recipient said that she had done something that sounded like experimentation with a shaman, however, I doubt that this person was legitimate in the sense that they knew what they were doing. My Reiki teacher vehemently was opposed to shamanic practice because of such occurences, but knowledge is power.
Your own intuition should always provide you with the right resources. Be discerning if you are seeking teachers. The word shaman is thrown around so easily today because there really is so little understanding of what this practice really is about, and that is partly because
there is still more education that needs to be presented on the subject. There are alot of people who take advantage of this and end up manipulating others who seek advice and training. I would say especially be wary of anything online that promotes itself as a shamanic training workshop, because you don't know who is really teaching you or what their resources are. I would also recommend The Institute for Shamanic Studies website. You may be able to get in touch with one of the teachers or the founder there, and that seems like a really good resource.
I also have two friends from tribe and myspace who are both practising shamans. One is Native and the other is white, both seem to have alot to offer. Filip Klein, who is Native Alaskan, is a practicing shamanic healer, and Richard Gross is a shamanic and sound healer. Richard has gone to Peru and apparently studied differenty shamanic practices, while Filip has seemed to have experienced direct training as a Native American. I am still getting to know both of these people, but I feel that they are worthwhile in terms of knowledge and resources. I hope to be able to meet and work with them at some point.
I myself do not practice, but am gathering years of internal experiences combined with reading and outside resources to have a balanced perspective on this path before I make any decisions for training. I feel that balancing the inside and the outside is the most well rounded path that someone can pursue.
And of course, if you just align yourself with positive energies and power, and not give any attention to things that do not serve you, that always opens the best doors. Ask the universe for what you want, the universe will always give you exactly what you need. Best of luck, and love and light to you.

tribe: Richard Grossman

Wed, February 20, 2008 - 2:47 PMoh yes, since you are in the Bay Area, CIIS( California Institute for Integral Studies) I have never studied there, but I heard good things about it while I was there. Terence Mckenna was a well known theoretician and author on the subject of shamanism, and actually got a degree in shamanism from Berkley University. Don't know if they would still have that, but it's something to look into.

Re: Where do i start when learning Shamanism?
Sun, July 6, 2008 - 6:37 PMtheres not a single workshop out there thats worth a damn, and theres no exchange of money thats going to bring the lessons you need either.
theres the old adage when the student is ready the teach will appear.
the rarity of finding an actual shaman thats going to teach you how to be a shaman is a real rarity.
the best advice i could give is to establish a relationship with the spirits in any way you can or feel drawn too, commune with them, and ask for a tutelary spirit to assist you, to teach you. ask for the highest shamanic teacher available to assist you in learning to become a shaman and then listen and pay attention to their guidance. this is how many traditions go. some one will feel called for what ever reason or find within themselves a good intention to aid their community then they will go out into the forest and call on the spirits to teach and guide them.
no one can come between you and spirit, and their are lots of people who feel that they can and should, and its nearly a cultural phenomena today coming from our european history with the catholic church that we think we need a pope or priest... the shaman has their own personal relationship with spirit, they seek it out and find it on their own, even if an authentic shaman is teaching you, they are only teaching you to find this relationship within your self...
go out and cry for a vision, cry for assistance cry for help so that you can heal the sickness in the world. thats where you start... and beware any one trying to sell you somthing...

Re: Where do i start when learning Shamanism?
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 4:23 PM.....i would tend to agree, StoneFeather..... the path of Shamanic study and work is a pth that teksyou first into and out of yourself..... It is whyit is a path that transcends decades of study....... A shaman, in my opion, is a pass-bye vessel of faciliation...... there fore, it is one often entering into it, teacher have you go into vision quests, celemonial challenges and expereinces..... shaminic death and rebirth.... a dying of the ego and rebirth...... acatully occurs numerous repeatedly...... so either way, wither you want ot pusue engaing in shamnic work or just for your own growth and life journyes, it is an invaluable path of self reflection and and self empowerment.
there are many cultural variation of Shamnic work. Native American, Peruvian, Brazilian. East African..... what calls you... and then do a search and find out what events, community offerings that are open.... A sweat lodge is a wonderful entry portal..... if you've not already doen so... and will connect you to teachers and healers..
ther are bookds, and there have been some great threads on this tribe on that...... I too recommend Carlos Castenda..... An East African Shaman is Malidome Some'.... his work "the Healing Wisdome of Africa" is a personal favorite. "Shaman, Healer, Sage" by Alberto Villoldo,...many many more.... I do not reommnded learning be all from books... or workshops... I do remcommend a personal mentoring relationship..... you will be surporsed your won stuff that comes up and clears..... Shamanic deaths are called deaths for a reason...... and re-birth.....
And nature...... Our greatest teacher....... Nature and Mother Earth.....
