I regularly email my Representatives at both the State and Federal level. My Representative in the House is Laura Richardson. Earlier in the week I sent a couple emails about issues that will be up for vote very soon. Within twenty-four hours I got responses from Ms Richardson's office - they were all blank. So I sent a return email stating that a blank response conveyed the feeling that no one had read my message.

. . . . . In my In-box this morning was another response from Ms Richardson's office, this one was not empty, it had a topic specific form letter in it. Someone on Ms Richardson's staff actually reads the emails.
It just may be that your elected Representatives do pay attention when you contact them, or at the very least there is a designated staff person.

As I've said before, this election will be crucial for the United States. We're wading into a time of economic and global turmoil. You see it on the news everyday, the weather phenomena, the catastrophes worldwide, now our national economy and debt (Largely caused by the Iraq war and a disregard for the middle class). Then you have the middle east factor and the wildfire of corporate powers and international bankers steadily sucking up resources in their own personal game of global monopoly.

Wake up!

I know some of the candidates like Kucinich, or some may even say Ron Paul, would have been good agents of change, but they are too far behind to win and we're now left with 4 possibilities of who will lead us into these new times.

For Republicans we have McCain and Romney. McCain is the forerunner for republicans. But assuming that you don't want us to stay in Iraq for another 100 years, and that you don't want the government eliminating more of your rights, they are out of the question.

So we have two choices left: Hillary or Obama?

There is a definite problem with Hillary and the Clinton family. They are networked with the Bush family! They have vacationed together, they have supported each other! They are in cahoots!
"The Washington Times revealed that the current President even takes foreign policy advice from Clinton, along with his father, and lets them sit in on CIA briefings."
If you want some leads on this information here is one of many sources: http://infowars.net/articles/may2006/100506clinton.htm

Obama is the one who can unite Americans, including the youth-our generation. He can stand up to special interests groups and manipulative power-hungry corporations. If you want to vote for someone who might make things right in our country then please consider this.

And celebrities can be wrong just like anyone, but they do have resources and with these resources there often comes inside information. Many of them know about the corruption behind the scenes regarding the American Government. That's why so many celebrities are endorsing Obama. Will Smith, Robert Deniro, Scarlet Johansen, The Kennedy's, even Arnold's wife is going against him and McCain to endorse Obama! And there are many more. Over a hundred large newspapers have recently moved to endorse him as well.

This is Obama's site if you want more info. Primary votes are tomorrow.
http://www.barackobama.com/index.php

And if your excuse is that the electoral system doesn't work, well I agree that there is a flaw in the fact that the popular vote does not directly elect our president, BUT the popular vote puts a LOT of pressure on each delegate to vote in line with his/her district's population. If the popular vote goes one way and the delegate's vote goes another way there will be a lot of controversy and it is something that rarely happens because these delegates don't want to lose popular support and be routed in the media and elsewhere.

So you can make a difference-
Peace.

Posted : Thursday Nov 8, 2007 15:45:57 EST

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Anti-war vets have been banned from marching in the 11th Veterans Day Parade in Long Beach.

A participation application filed by Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace and Military Families Speak Out was turned down because organizers want Saturday’s parade free from politics.

“They do not fit the spirit of the parade, the spirit being one of gratitude for what the veterans have done,” said Martha Thuente, coordinator for the nonprofit Veterans Day Parade Committee.

“We do not want groups of a political nature, advocating the troops’ withdrawal from Iraq,” she added.

Some veterans and anti-war groups were unhappy.

“It’s a violation of democracy, the whole concept which we are allegedly dying for,” said Adrian Novotny, a Vietnam vet and local president of Veterans for Peace. He said it was particularly frustrating because the group was allowed to march in the parade last year.

Iraq veteran Jason Lemieux, a Marine who served three tours of duty in Iraq and is now against the war, said he had planned to march as a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

“I wanted to march like the rest of the Iraq veterans,” Lemieux said. “I served my country. I’m a veteran of a foreign war. I think I deserve that respect.”

The anti-war groups complained to the City Council this week, but City Attorney Bob Shannon said Wednesday that the parade committee was a private, nonprofit organization that had a right to choose its participants.

“These veterans groups certainly have First Amendment rights,” Shannon said. “But the parade committee also has the First Amendment right to exclude whoever they wish if (the entry) does not keep within the theme.”

The city provides the staffing, flags, banners, utilities and police protection, Shannon said, but does not play any role in the approval of parade participants.

Take action:
Mayor Bob Foster

Hello all!! How many of you out there have heard of Zankou Chicken?? If you haven't it's time for you to check them out! They have some of the best Armenian food ever! Their Falafail is kickass, as well as their shwarma; not to mention the garlic sauce that is known pretty widely in the LA area. Check them out www.zankouchicken.com

Why am i asking this?? Well, it turns out that Zankou is planning another restaurant and they are taking votes to determine what city should be graced with their presence. Last I heard Long Beach was #2! Riverside was #1..we can't be beat out by Riverside! HELL NO!

We could really use a great new restaurant in LB...believe me you won't be disappointed. Hell...before you vote, try the food. There are also reviews here on Tribe. Help make LB #1!

Go to zankouchickens@aol.com and place your vote...they usually respond pretty quickly.

*PS If you're concerned about it being a corporation...it's not. It's been family owned since it opened and the owners even passed up the opportunity to be bought out for big money from Pepsi or something like that...yet another reason to love Zankou!

It's fairly new (I don't think it's been therer long than a year) and the ambiance is simple and elegant. Their prices are extremely reasonable as far as sushi goes. I had a lunch special ( I think they're served between 11:30 and 3) which was about $9 for 3 cut rolls (California, spicy tuna, and avocado), but they also had a huge selection of amazing looking specialty rolls (arond $7-15 each) in addition to a full Japenese menu. I'll update once I try a few more things on the menu.

I like artsy cafes, coffee houses, bars, and restaurants that are cool and easy going without being overly trendy, contrived, or commercialized. The kind of places that get crowded only once in a while and only because the artist-types that gather there love it so much, not because it is necessarily "the place to be." Does this make sense? Do any of you have recommendations? I hope so. I would love to find some new stomping grounds that fit with my personality and that deserve loyal patronatage. Thanks everyone!
p.s: a cool bar that serves the beer Fat Tire would be a plus as well :-)

I'm doing the standard search on craigslist and drive by spottings, (and also, gonna check out Rent.com as mentioned in another thread) but thought the extended network of all you Long Beachists might know of/keep an ear out for a place...

I need a cheap place to live... I recently returned to school, so, can't afford much...

AND - I do metal sculpture and need a descent sized studio (garage, ship container, etc) in which to do this... the cool thing is I am completely open to trade... metal work for rent of the studio space... so anyone know of someone with extra ndustrial space... they can get cool gates, fences and railings (etc) out of the deal...

Just putting it out there....
I love the slow pace of LB but I've become addicted to Hollywood and all the things to do (Grove, farmers market, griffith park, etc..). I've looked into the rent and it's not much different than that of LB. I know my car insurance will go up a little but the funny thing is it can be lower depending on what area of the Hollywood area you live in (full coverage in Hancock park is about $100 compared to my $140 now and I live in Bixby Knolls off Country Club drive. It doesn't make sense. Last year I lived in Belmont shore and I loved walking to 2nd street but now when I go there after working in Hollywood it seems slow and more fit for soccer moms. I know there will be down sides to moving up there (more door dings on my car, longer drive to get to the beach etc..) but over all it'll be a nice change after 13 years in Long Beach.

Okay, here's my take. I think Portfolio is the best free wifi spot in LB but I've been trying to find some places on 2nd street because I live closer to it and have found that Polly's doesn't work with my Apple. I asked a guy who worked there and all he said was, "all I know is it's plugged in and some people were using it earlier" so I'm not sure what the deal is there. I wished that italian cafe near blockbuster on 2nd street offered wifi because they have really good coffee.
I've heard LB downtown is all free but I tried to connect from George's Greek Deli on Pine one day for lunch and wasn't able to pick anything up using a windows machine.
Anyone else have any other good spots they'd like to share? So far hands down Portfolio has my vote because it always works, coffee is good, people are friendly, but at times it can be a struggle to find a seat.

Honestly, I bought my car at Timmons over a year ago and I was really happy with the service department afterwards. I know this sounds like a complete sales pitch but it's what prompted me to cold call the sales manager and get a job there over one of our larger dealerships in town.

Come on out for the Critical Mass bike ride this Friday... The last one of the summer! All you need is bike and a good attitude.

For information on Critical Mass in general, try here:
http://criticalmassrides.info/

Critical Mass Long Beach rides happen the third Friday of every month. The meet-up point is at Bixby Park, near the bandstand, located at the corner of Junipero and 1st St. at 6:30pm. The ride will begin from there. All rides are about an hour in length and usually travel on flat paved streets.

After the ride, the group typically gets together for something to eat and drink.

This is also a good event for everyone from the Tribe to meet up...

As the food was okay the vibe and staff were blan as any other O.C. chain restaurant. My current favorite spots are Cafe Piccolo, Bacchus & Joe Josts. All reflect a local charm distinctly different from LA or OC eateries. I would like find some new interesting places to check out. Any recommendations?
