25/f Seeks new home on Eastside

I made you look! Well I am actually a librarian but I don't wear pencil skirts or shush people. I'm 25 years old, mature emotionally, quiet, employed and studying for my masters degree. I don't like the word hipster but i do like Silverlake and vintage clothes, artwalk, microbrews etc. I do not care what color you are or what your sexual orientation is.

I need a new place by June 1st. I do not drink or smoke at home and am out of the house enough not to bug you. I can pay the rent. Though I am unconventional I am not chaotic and love peaceful, functional environments. I come with some nice pieces of furniture and a dog. Please read the entire ad before responding. I would love to live with other animals.

1)Chihuahua friendly (not just tolerant but friendly).

2)Under 900 dollars a month.

3)In a quiet neighborhood on the eastside of town but not the valley and not east of Pasadena.

4)Only one roommate (female) if not a single/studio.

5)Not in a giant, manufactured cookie cutter development.

6)Clean! Simple. Loft-like, tasteful, spare.

7)It will not be rented room but a home with my belongings furnishing the whole house.

I figure there are thousands of young/youngish people with like minds who need to split rent in this city. I just need to find the right fit.

Interested in Having Hoopdance Classes in Your Area?

Hello Echo Park!

My name is Catherine Flournoy of Hoopadelic™ Hoopdance, a holistic hoopdance service provider in the Los Angeles area. Having spent a number of years living around Echo Park I'm passionate to bring as many services to this part of LA County so residents don't feel left out from some of the really cool things that are happening on the Westside.

With that said I'd really love to bring hoopdance classes to a neighborhood or two (three, four, five.... ;)) near you! If you know of any dance studios, yoga studios, warehouse, venues, gymnasiums, ANYTHING that can hold a large group of bodies in motion then please send your requests and suggestions my way! Since I can't be at more than one place at a time (at least not in this dimension) I would LOVE to learn more about the various areas in and around Echo Park! through your suggestions. Thank you so much for your help! Let's make Echo Park an ever growing place for cultural arts, entertainment and unique activities.

Much Love, Light & Hoopiness,
Catherine

I need a book on california birds . I am contacting the Echo park parks and rec assocaition. Maybe we can get funding.
I want to get a plaque type thing, or maybe it's called a photo box and put the pics and a small description of the bird or turtle or fish in it.
I saw a blue heron today, it was awesome. Not a giant blue heron, a small short blue heron. And there are new ducklings, so cute.
Anyway write me if you are interested jenas13@gmail.com

Why Proposition H is good for Los Angeles.

Proposition H has something for everyone: Apartments paired up with support services for the homeless, apartments for the working class (otherwise known as “low-income”), and my favorite: first-time home-buyer assistance for the professionals, teachers, cops, artists, social workers, firefighters and everyone who keeps our city running but can’t afford to buy a home in Los Angeles. Just think about it- people who work in Los Angeles will be able to live in Los Angeles. No long commutes, no need to expand freeways, and the reduction of pollution, all for about $50.00 to $75.00 per year per property owner.

In 1997, my husband and I were two working professionals (he an artist with Disney and me a social worker with the County of Los Angeles) who set out on the journey to buy our first home. We had no debt and great credit, we saved every dime we could, we did without vacations, we drove very old cars and we took the bus to save money. But with all that, we still needed a little assistance to buy a house. We found that assistance from the City of Los Angeles’ first-time housing programs, similar to one that Prop H on the November 7th ballot would fund.

During the nine years we have lived in our Silver Lake home, we have not only transformed our once dilapidated house into a community gem, we have helped cleaned up the surrounding neighborhood, helped the police rid our street of drug dealers, fought the city to install a traffic light at a dangerous crosswalk, mentored local kids, organized the neighbors to fight for what we needed from the city and county, served as a parent leader at our daughter’s school (our community school), organized community fairs, volunteered with community organizations and coalitions that fight for more park space and improved public transportation, and helped start two Neighborhood Councils. And all in all, by helping to improve the community, we contributed much more than the monies we received from the city’s home-buyer program. Homeownership and high quality affordable rental housing makes for better communities. Vote yes on Los Angeles Proposition H.

If you're interested in having more park around the reservoir, please attend a workshop on Saturday, 9/16 from 3-6 PM at Marshall High School, 3939 Tracy Street (behind Gelsons) to tell Eric Garcetti, the DWP and others what you would like to see happen at the reservoir in the coming years. If you're sick of the fence, let them know. This is the first meeting of its kind since 2000 and Eric Garcetti would like to open the Meadow and the Eucalyptus Grove within the next two years.

Your input and support is extremely important.

Open Call for Photo Submission: My L.A. Pic

This call goes out to everybody in Los Angeles. We want your digital photographs of Los Angeles for My L.A. Pic project to be included in the upcoming exhibit L.A. 225 which will be held at the Pico House Gallery to commemorate the 225th birthday of Los Angeles in September of 2006.

The objective of My L.A. Pic is to create a digital photographic presentation of Los Angeles’ neighborhoods as seen through the eyes of the people who live there. Show your side of L.A. that people wouldn’t normally see. You do not have to be an artist or photographer to participate.

There is NO entry fee and the youth are encouraged to participate. We also encourage Los Angeles organizations to share this information with their members. Photographs selected to be included in the exhibit are the sole discretion of the project’s organizers.
Photo Submission Guidelines

Number of Submissions Accepted: Each person may submit one digital photograph which must have been taken within the city of Los Angeles.

The following information must be included in the submission:

1-Where was the photo shot? Use nearest intersection. Example: Wilshire & Western.

2-When was the photo taken? Example: Aug.1.2006

3-What is the photographer’s first and last name?

4- What is the photographer’s age? Example: Age: 22

All photos must be:

Original: Photos submitted must have been taken by the person submitting, and may not be a reproduction of another image. Images that might infringe on copyright, trademark or that promote a commercial product will not be selected.
Family friendly: All photos must be suitable for viewing by general public, this includes children. Any photo deemed inappropriate will not be selected.

Size: All photos must be in JPEG (.jpg) format at 72 dpi. The dimensions may not be larger than 720 and smaller than 160 pixels. If this all sounds too complicated, don’t despair. It’s actually quite simple. You can even do it online for free. Just use your favorite browser and search for keywords like “resize photo”. We found the following website by doing the same: http://www.resize2mail.com/ Please note that we are in no way affiliated with this website and found them by doing a search on the internet. They are a free service and resizing your photo will take only a minute or two. It’s really important to send us the right size no matter how you resize the photos. We simply do not have the resources to do it for you. If you do use the said website (or any other) please choose the [720 x 540] dimension specification. Other sizes will not be considered.

Deadline for the first stage is Friday, Aug. 19, 2006 at 5pm.

Email your image along with the requested information to: myLApic@yahoo.com and type "My LA Pic" in the subject line

You may only submit your picture once; multiple submissions will be disqualified. IMPORTANT: By sending your image to myLApic@yahoo.com you agree to allow the organizers to use your image in the L.A. 225 exhibition and its associated publicity. Please contact project coordinator at myLApic@yahoo.com with all inquires.

This information and updates will be available on: http://www.geocities.com/mylapic

I'm getting tired of my friends flaking out as tennis partners. Is there anyone who like to regularly play tennis or some sort of tennis club that gets together? Just wondering.

hi everyone

i was wondering if anyone knew of a good place for my birthday this upcoming saturday that fits this criteria:

relatively cheap (entrees for no more than around $12)
can seat a party of 10-15 people
decent atmosphere
somewhere on the eastside (little tokyo, echo park, silverlake, los feliz, etc)
serves alcohol (at least beer and wine)

i originally wanted to go someplace in little tokyo but can't seem to find any japanese places that can accomodate large parties.
any help would be appreciated!
--amanda

There's absolutely nothing on these Californians' third...album...that you haven't heard before on a hundred indie discs. Languid strum patterns, spooky pianos, shimmery arpeggios, distant e-bows sawing away under half-whispered, heavy-lidded vocals-- it's all there. But it's better than you might think...The reason it all works? Texture. Aaron Espinoza pays more attention to texture than just about anyone out there twiddling the proverbial knobs...Every instrument on "Everyone Down Here" sounds warm, yet weird: hearing a simple tremolo on a guitar lick is, somehow, a revelation. Even the tape hiss that haunts the first and last several seconds of each song is somehow rendered pleasant, like a handful of sand oozing between your fingers.

with Joseph Israel (lionsofisrael.com)

Perhaps no other guitarist has had as much influence on Jamaican music, and certainly none as far as contemporary reggae is concerned, than Earl "Chinna" Smith, the quintessential session musician and tour player.

In a career that has spanned over three decades, "Chinna" has made a name for himself with countless sessions for reggaes biggest names, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, and Agustus Pablo to name a few. Smith has literally played with everyone in reggae lending his unique guitar sound and arrangements to well over 300 recordings, including many of reggae music's most memorable classics.

When Smiths guitar work reached the ears of Bob Marley, he was asked to add his guitar sound to the reggae legends 1976 classic, "Rastaman Vibration" album, as well as touring with the Wailers. He also played guitar on several other sessions for Marley over the years, including several of the classic songs on "Exodus."

An unabashed purest, and a musician's musician, Chinna is committed to live recording, a trait that caries over to his guitar playing style which involves a minimum use of studio gadgets.

"People have stopped working and let electronics do their work for them," Chinna told Guitar Player Magazine in a 1983 interview, "I'm not against electronics but I believe if the music I'm playing can be more natural, then it will be more spiritual." Chinna continues to play and produce the music he loves and has much more yet to be released, so stay tuned...

Funniest thing, to see a long stretch-limo bottomed-out and stuck at the top of Baxter at Alvarado/Cerro Gordo today. The poor driver (uniform & hat & cell-phone ear wire) was out directing traffic around his beached whale.

Guess he used a map, poor fool.

The Los Angeles Cacophony Society is once again creating the most horrifying and original walk-thru "haunted house" in the free world. That's right. The Museum of Mental Decay, now in its fifth year is gearing up for two nights of madness, art, installation and performance and we need you. Your ideas. Your sweat. Your blood. The event will be in the basement of the Crocker Bank building in Downtown Los Angeles and many good rooms are still available as well as countless small creepy spaces like vaults, confessional-type safe deposit booths, bathrooms and closets full of old telephone wire. The location is already scary. All you have to do is claim your space and do your thing. Whatever that is. If you ever thought you knew what would disturb or amuse the paying public and you want a chance to do just that send a message and I'll put you in touch with the woman in charge.

So... how 'bout that guy??! He stands there on the corner for hours, at odd hours. Maybe in his 30s, Hispanic, nice-looking guy, baseball cap. I've never seen him selling any drugs; no-one stops there. I'm pretty sure he lives there, and probably has a psych problem of some sort. ISN'T waiting for the bus.
Last summer when my truck was in the shop for weeks, I was walking the TWO Baxter hills from Echo Park Bl. to Allesandro to take the 605. (YES I DID!!! Can you believe that crazy shit? It cut an hour off my bus commute.) At first he would hide while I was there, but eventually I managed to say just a friendly "hi" to him. Didn't try conversation cuz I sensed he was aversive to such. Since then he always waves back at me & smiles when I drive by & wave at him.
He seems really sweet.

parking mess

hello - for those of you who live in the area near the intersections of Echo Park Ave/ Grafton/ Delta/ Lucretia/ Morton/ and Scott, I just wanted to let you know about some upcoming changes that will drastically affect parking in this area.

There is a new 38-unit apartment building being constructed on Delta just off Echo Park that has apparently obtained a variance from the LADBS so it does not have to provide the required minimum amount of parking spaces for its future residents. Additionally, we just received notice yesterday in our building that the owners are closing our parking lot as of Dec. 1st (which currently serves the 30+ households in our building) - the manager here has suggested that they will be renting out spaces for exorbitant fees. There is already a shortage of street parking in this area, and the problem is going to needlessly become much worse in the coming weeks.

We have contacted the local city councilman and several neighborhood organizations already and they share our concern for what is happening in our community. Additionally, there will be a meeting tomorrow night, Friday Nov. 19th, at 1553 N. Echo Park to discuss what can be done to try to resolve this problem. Complaints can also be directed to councilman Eric Garcetti's office at 323-254-9800, or the LA Housing Department at 213-808-8888. Any further suggestions would be appreciated as well.

Coyotes?

Has anyone heard coyotes around the area lately? My neighbors let their tiny miniature Pinscher out to the bathroom a couple nights ago and saw something swoop out of the bushes and nab him out of the backyard! They think they've heard coyotes recently, but I haven't heard anything. Any idea what it could have been?

Its so traumatizing, he was the sweetest little dog I've ever met. Our cat disappeared too but we think it just left us for another family down the street...

short stop for the last time this summer

don't know if everyone is at burning man or not, but some of us are still here and should go to short stop on thursday, as usual, as our last thursday of the summer!

we usually meet at 5pm, i think Pabstolutely begins then [$1 pints], that way you can just stop off after work, rather than going home and debating whether to come out again... i will probably be out and about working, so will head that way as close to 5 as possible.

i have not been in about 5 weeks, so i am ready! if you can't find me, i am probably in a dark booth, making out with some young dude with sideburns ;) ah, the remedies of heartbreak...

just kidding. usually randy etc meet in the back "patio" because it is the only place to smoke, but i don't smoke. if there is a Dodger game on, i will probably be at the far end of the bar watching the tv over the jukebox [and checking out which hot young dude with sideburns that i will make out with after the game]...

anyone else? AXJ? Flubber? por favor? we have to keep this tradition going, so that when Randy comes back [you are coming back, right, Randy?], it will still be going on!

I just saw one wandering around the street near EP Ave. and Ewing. It looked well fed.....and tasty, too!

Now that Pioneer's gone, maybe I'll start 'living off the land'. You know, squirrels, racoons, prickly pear cactus, and nasturtium flowers are pretty tasty, too. Just pick 'em high enough off the ground so they're not covered in dog pee.

Thursday Night is Poor Impulse Control Night at the Shortstop

Once again, we shall gather in the city known as the City of Angels. We shall imbibe in spirits extracted from the grains of the earth, in order to heighten our joy, and plunge into the carefree void of the unknown, abyss.

Yes, my gentle good readers, it’s that time again-
Thursday Night is Poor Impulse Control Night at the Shortstop
Will there be naked bodies? Perhaps? How about heavy petting in the restroom? Hey you never know. Any violence? Well That I don’t know, but there’s always a chance. Will there be drunkenness? That, we can promise. Lots of drunken belligerent people chain-smoking like there’s no tomorrow, drinking like fish, making fun of one another, arguing over who was the best Soul group of the 70’s, the best Burroughs quote or who was the best Doctor on Dr, Who, or the best ways to cure drug addiction, based on experience.

But more than that, here’s the best reason to show up: It will be Randy’s birthday. Yes, the man who chose long ago to forget how old he is does celebrate his birthday, especially when other people are buying the drinks & gifts.

He wants lots of Victory-oriented stuff. Especially if someone wants to buy him the stage II exhaust system, raised handlebars, or a gift certificate to have his tank custom-painted.

But if that’s not enough, this may be Randy’s last week in Los Angeles, as he goes north on Friday, to work for Apple Computers.

And who knows? He may spend the entire night talking in third-person.

Again, that’s The Shortstop Bar- 1455 Sunset Blvd- Just a couple of blocks up from Echo Park Ave, going in the direction of downtown LA. Doors open at 5:00.

See you there.

Tonight a bus driver here in EP told me that Pioneer Market, which has been in this neighborhood forever, much longer than you'd think, is shortly to close down and a Wal-Mart will be put up in its place. Pioneer Market simply isn't making any money, I was told. I suppose in a certain way it makes sense: most of the yuppies and hipsters who've moved into this neighborhood have always avoided it. Anyway, if true, this seems like rather a bad omen, like the disappearance of frogs or somesuch.

What’s happening: Thursday Night is Poor Impulse Control Night at the Shortstop or, or TNiPICNaS for short.
Date: Every Thursday- 5:00 till closing
Place/location: The Short Stop
1455 Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles California
(Just a couple of blocks up from Echo Park Ave, going in the direction of downtown LA. )
What's There: Strong Cheap Drinks
A Great Juke Box
*Lots* of Really Dark Corners
Occasional Food
A B&W insta-photo-booth
*Biker/Motorcycle-friendly
Why should you go: To get drunk on cheap alcohol, meet one another face to face and see what happens with Poor Impulse Control melts away into no-impulse-control. That's why. Who knows, you might even see nudity. AND if you show up, you might be treated to a SUPER SEKRET performance of none other than Rick James, Jack White, & Jack Black performing a once-in-a-lifetime accoustic set*.
*Any claims of live performances are purely created in the imagination of the post's author. The probability of such a performance actually happening is quite low. You stand a better chance of being struck by bolts of lightning that are hurled by the hand of Vanessa Del Rio than this actually occurring. If such a performance were to occur, not only would it be coincidental, but the author of this post would probably become a monk.

Bars *other* than The Shortstop

My favorite watering-hole in Burbank, the Tinhorn Flats, has decided that there's more money to be made in being a sports bar, rather than a blue/no-collar biker-freindly bar, so I'm in need of new digs for thursday night.

As much as I like The Shortstop, the prices can sometimes be a bit steep. Any recomendations as per other places?

Who the hell is playing that terrible Soft Cell covers in the valley and why wont they stop?

I even tried yelling at them.

Does anyone know where its coming from? Is it some garage band like the Metal Kids with no drummer? Or is it some repeat gathering?

They tore it down! the bastards! A sign says it's "on vacation", and they're giving away chunks of the painting. But for some reason, I don't think we'll be seeing it ever again.

Strange Picture on The Short Stop wall

So last night, I stopped in The Short Stop, to get a few drinks, and watch Calgary get their asses stomped by Tampa Bay.

In-between periods, I was looking at all the various cop memorabilla that still decorates the walls, when one picture in particular caught my eye. The picture was of a squad of (undercover?) cops posed in front of a door. It appears to have been taken sometime between the 70's to lat 80's. The caption on the picture read "The monsters of the Monster House". I asked about it, but no one seemed to know.

Anyway, does anyone know anything about this picture?
