Hi!

I just got a new Toyota FJ Cruiser a few weeks ago and I'm dying to get it out in the desert or something. Only thing, I've never really been off-roading so I don't particularly know where any trails are. I've been trying to find something online that's kinda close for the weekend. I keep finding things that are kinda far from LA. My question is, is there anything relatively close that I can go to this weekend - Sunday maybe? Anyone have plans to go out anywhere this weekend? Let me know as any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

I hope that people can hang out, become friends, have good conversation, and enjoy the safety of having another vehicle and more ideas to assist with vehicle recovery. THis is also a great place to talk about road conditions, favorite trails, driving tech. etc... If your just here for a ride you should hold on cuz its a rough one.

I lifted my ranger with 1" t-bar crank and 1" body lift giving me some more clearance. I think installed traction bars which helped alot. I changed all the fluid , had the rear main seal replaced. Also installed a cb radio and 6 gang fuse box. Modified my fog lights so they will stay on when the brights are on. this gives 6 lights forward and its illegal. On the trail at night the extra light helps .

its ready to hit the trail . there should be a ranger meet coming up on interstate 15 on the cajon pass soon . any 2wd or 4wd truck/suv is welcome .

Went across cleighorn ridge last weekend . It goes from I-15 at devore to silverwood lake. Its 14 miles long and the main road was passable by high clearance 2wd but 4wd is helpful. The secondary jeep trail which intersects the main road very frequently ranged from moderate to extreme. Moderate is challenging for a stock vehicle extreme meaning stock vehicles will likely have damage and even heavily modified vehicles will need a skilled driver. some sections where extremely steep , uneven, and loose. Lockers and alot of articulation recomended for most sections except a few at the top . the views are pretty good , combined with a VERY easy drive this was a cool day trip . I left orange county at 6 am and was home by noon .

From where i was i could see Pine Mtn road which travels along the next ridge over. Pine mtn is forested where as cleighorn ridge is mostly just brush. I would recomend pine mtn road and skip cleighorn ridge . pine mtn also has a challenging jeep trail paralleling an easy road.

The trail leaves from the 15 freeway about 1 mile before the devore exit. The road climbs steeply and travels over a shelf road to end at silverwood lake . There are actualy 2 routes running next to eachother . One route is the main road is passable by a 2wd high- clearance. The second route is a 4x4 trail which follows the ridgetop more closely . The two trails cross eachother frequently and because you can usualy see ahead you can choose what sections and what difficulty level you want to try.
Just wondering if folks go out in the winter. Because of my ignorance of CA laws my S-10 Blazer got impounded by the Army on a trip to Las Padres. I think that was good because I scored a great deal on a 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban.
I am game to hit the off-road as long as I don't have to do any extreme rock crawling at this point. I try to go somewhere every weekend. If you have broadband you can look at some of the pictures from my weekly camping trips on my profile page. Sorry about the couple of Xmas parties that you will have to scroll through first.
