The Big Apple Convention Summer Sizzler just keeps getting hotter!
Richard Dreyfus, Oscar-winning actor, star of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws American Graffitti, The Goodbye Girl, What About Bob, Mr. Hollands Opus, and many, many more, will be a guest of honor at the June 7-8 Big Apple Convention.

But that's not all! Jason Mews (Jay of the Jay and Silent Bob series of movies) and Johnny Brennan, creator of the Jerky Boys and the voice of Mort Goldman from “The Family Guy.” So, who among you wants to so see a Q&A panel with these two guys? Snd in your comments to thebigapplecon@yahoo.com

Our Star Trek roster (previously consisting only of McDowell from “Star Trek: Generations”) has been increased by the lovely addition of Chase Masterson, who played Leeta in “Star Trek: Deep Space 9.”

David Zen Mansley, the voice of Agent Bishop and Darius Dunn on the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles TV cartoon, has been with us the past two conventions and rejoins us. This time he heads up a Turtles contingent that will include Wayne Grayson, the voice of Michaelangelo as well as Joey from Yu-Gi-Oh, last seen at Big Apple in 2005, and Adrian, character designer for the TV cartoon who also has his own rock band. There is a possibility of even more Turtles-connected folks appearing, so stay tuned.

Dark Shadows fans will be pleased to know that Kathryn Leigh Scott, who played Maggie Evans, will be with us. She also adds to our Star Trek lineup, thanks to her role as Nuria in “Start Trek: The Next Generation.”

Other returning guests include Jasmin St. Claire, model, actress, pro wrestler, and host of the DVDzine “Metal's Darkside,” and Monique Dupree, singer and actress known as the first African-American scream queen.

Got Dice?
NerdNYC.com and the Gotham Gaming Guild will be hosting the biggest day of gaming at the Big Apple Con yet! With over a dozen different games scheduled so far, Sunday June 7 will be jam-packed with more role-playing and boardgame action than you can throw a double zero on a percentile die at! With no modifiers!

Film Festival News!
After the success of the films screened at last year's National Expo, Big Apple has gone out and found some new and exciting independent films , many of which will seen on the big screen right here for the very first time. The films are:

Features
Drawn by Pain (Saturday)
Methodic (Saturday)
Tomb Raider: Ascension (Fan film; Sunday)

Shorts
A Short Film About Jedi
Back Issues
I Want to be Famous (Saturday)
Pirates Vs. Ninjas (Sunday)

The complete film schedule is not set yet, so check the website in the coming weeks to find the final screening times and latesst additions, and check it right now to find out more about these films.

Costumes, anyone?
I saw a lot of wonderful costumes at I-Con and NY Comic Con, and I would love to see them all at Captain Zorikh's Costume Contest. The contest at the National Expo was the largest and most spectacular ever, and easily overflowed the space in which it was taking place. This time we have a much bigger space in which to hold our contest, and we are working on certain categories in which to reward our contestants.

So those of you who like to dress up, start planning now!

You can see pictures of past costume contestants at http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w155/thebigapplecon/ and http://ww.myspace.com/bigapplenyc

Volunteers Needed!
As you can see we've got a heck of a show coming up, but we can't get it done all alone. We need folks who can help us spread the word through flyering and other promotional activities and we will need lots of folks to help us pull off this convention on June 7-8. If you think you have what it takes to volunteer to help us, send us an e-mail at bacvolunteers@yahoo.com. Your service will grant you admission to the convention as well as invites to occasional movie screenings and other great bonuses...and our undying gratitude!

Join the Big Apple Movie Club to tell us what you think. It's Free!
That's it for now. I'm off to the Chiller Theater Convention this weekend, so I'm not going to get a chance to see the new Iron Man movie. But if any of you folks do, why not go to the Big Apple c Convention's Movie Club (http://www.bigapplemovieclub.com/), register for the forum, and start telling us what you thought of it? It's the newest interactive community website from the Big Apple, and it is one that will be powered by YOUR participation. New York has some of the smartest filmgoers in the world, especially when it comes to films based on comic book characters, so let's hear what you have to say!

And feel free to befriend us, join us, etc at the social networking site of your choice to get the latest news, discussion, pictures, and info about the Big Apple Convention:

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

Captain Zorikh's Lost Guitar

We can call this story "If it could happen to anyone, why did it happen to me?"

There are 8 million stories in the naked city. Some of them intertwine and intersect. I am sending this message in the hope that in a week of entwining intersections, there can be just one more that can help me get my guitar back.

Captain Zorikh did it again. After an enjoyable evening at the Church of Pop website launch party (http://www.thechurchofpop.com , a very interesting event of multi-media art and entertainment), I headed home on the L train at about 12:15 with every intention of getting home and working on my Captain Marvel Culture website (http://www.captainmarvelculture.com). I had my Washburn acoustic guitar in its black Manny's Music gig bag on my back, but took it off so I could stand up and distribute a few flyers for the Big Apple Convention coming up on November 16-17-18 (http://www.bigapplecon.com). I sat back down when I was done and pulled out a copy of Avengers #191 to read for the rest of the brief journey. When I got to the Montrose Ave stop, I got up and walked out. I stopped at the deli outside the subway exit, and, after ordering a roast beef sandwich (lettuce, tomato and mustard, on a roll), I realized...I didn't have my guitar.

I rushed back down to the subway platform and told the token booth attendant (I'm sorry, I'll always call them that. Just nostalgic, I guess) who did yeoman service making phone calls to let the conductor know that I had left my guitar in the train and to see if he could find it. After an interminable wait, the word was...no guitar.

It's a very horrible feeling to realize one has lost his guitar. This guitar has been a significant part of my livelihood for the past few years. It is one of the few purchases I have made that has paid for itself, many times over. It has helped me get through rough emotional times and helped me communicate my joy with other people. I also ned it for a gig this coming weekend at Jeff Mach's Labyrinth http://www.wickedfaire.com/labyrinth/index.html
But also with the guitar was the case it was carried in, and in that case were extra strings, two harmonicas and a harmonica holder, a capo, extra picks, loose change from busking, and a dozen or so Watch This Space comics, various issues, for me to sell.

It was a dumb, simple, way of forgetting it. Such a significant loss for such a miniscule payoff.

So I guess three things could have happened. 1) a good Samaritan now has my guitar and is going through my extra strings, harmonica, loose change from busking (all the foreign coins and amusement park slugs that get tossed in) and dozen or so copies of my Watch This Space comics to find contact info to get the guitar back to its rightful owner or 2) they turned it in to a station attendant who will turn it in to the MTA lost & found or 3) they are keeping it for themselves, thus saving $350 on a very good-sounding guitar (despite some wear and tear). There is also the possibility that it was kidnapped by aliens, but that's not very likely and I don't accept it. If it had been taken for an "unattended package" then the train line would have been shut down and I would know exactly where it is.

So, over the course of this week I have met one person from my alma mater, the School of Visual Arts, one person who is an artist who regularly goes to the Big Apple Convention, and two people that I have known through William Shakespeare's Haunted House, and one who I first met in the SCA, then later when she was working at Belvedere Castle when WSHH was performing there, then again when she turned out to be a friend of a co-worker at Anchor Network, then again when she was waitressing at Veselka. With all these coincidences, I can only hope for just one more, the coincidence that one of you within the sound of my voice knows the person, or is the person, who picked up my guitar that I lest on the L train heading for Broadway Junction at Montrose Ave at about 12:20 in the morning of Saturday night/ Saturday morning September 23-23.

You can see a picture of the guitar at http://www.myspace.com/captainzorikhmusic

On Monday I will call the MTA's Lost & Found. When I have the results of that investigation, or if somehow my guitar gets back to me sooner, I will let you all know.

I won't send out a "please buy my products at http://www.captainzorikh.com/wts/catalogue.html or buy something from Amazon.com by clicking on the Amazon.com link on almost any page of my website http://www.captainzorikh.com and help me get a new guitar" message until after I have determined that the guitar is actually lost and gone forever.

"Batucada L’Atelier”
“Drumming Workshop”

At

ReBooT
37 Ave. A (2nd & 3rd St.)

Thursdays at 9 PM

Calling all drummers…. come and join us on Thursdays and be in the
Dance Parade on May 19th

This is a Brazilian Style drumming group that has played together for more than 5 years and has decided to take the magic that happens every week and introduce it to the general public. Batucada is a verb meaning drumming and is a Brazilian term for drum circle which is usually "Samba or Samba Reggae". We however do some other rhythms like Condombe' which is Uruguayan and Guaguanco which is Cuban, but it all comes back to Africa when you talk about drumming. We do also blend these rhythms with other instruments like electric guitar which gives the drumming a more song like structure and becomes what I can only describe as a "Funky Santana" Feel. We are also participating in the Dance Parade (We'll be providing the beat to move your feet) and will hopefully attract some more drummers to join us when we hit the streets. ReBoot is a newish Vegetarian restaurant which is related to Two Boots and has great vibe. They have lots of vegan and live things on the menu as well as offering the amazing pizza which does have some meat.

We're looking for a group of cultured people that would be interested in the following:
Alternative music (anything but top 40 - air, pinback, arcade fire, modest mouse, bloc party, architecture in helsinki, johnny cash, the smiths), Gaming (trivial pursuit, risk, poker, cards), Belgian beer, nice wine, good food, good friends, low drama. We're thinking about organizing dinners, brunches, cocktail (beer, wine, spirits) nights, game nights, film and music discussions.

We are a Manhattan married couple, both designers by trade, creative types in our late 20s/ early 30s, one American, one European. We are looking for people that have similar interests, that are sick of going to clubs and bars till 5am and that want to have meaningful conversations with intelligent people... You should have similar interests (art, music, film, theater, travel) and should be cultured. You don't have to be in a "couple," but shouldn't be searching for anything other than friendships. If you're interested, PLEASE EMAIL ME at heatherbritpop@yahoo.com, as I don't always check tribe. Look forward to meeting you!

OCTOBER 7th BASSNECTAR CD RELEASE PARTY - Please forward!

NYC Oct. 7th- Freek Factory and Disorient present
“Freeking The Ultra” a celebration of Bassnectar’s
anticipated double disc release Mesmerizing The Ultra.

The Brooklyn-based up-and-coming production team Freek Factory
hosts the NYC return of Bassnectar (Lorin Ashton) on Oct.
7th, joined by an international and bi-coastal cadre of
dance floor destroyers, for an epic affair celebrating the
release of his double CD tour de force.

From undulating midtempo beats to cut up hyp-hop; driving
breakbeat to sultry downtempo, angelic melodics meet
bassline perversion on Mesmerizing the Ultra. Stellar
production coincides with a strong political awareness;
demonstrating an unwavering dedication to underground
subversion. The list of collaborators and remixes on the
album include Freq Nasty, Buckethead, KRS One, Mumia Abu
Jamal, Noam Chomsky, STS9, Kraddy, Sayr and Kang from the
String Cheese Incident as well as a host of talented
underground MCs and producers. Freek Factory is proud to host the official New York City debut of this exciting new material.

In their outlandish freak style and for one night only,
the Freek Factory posse will transform 251 West 30th
Street (formerly Downtime) into a heathen’s den of
outerworldly delights. Resident creatrix Sequoia
Emmanuelle will add her vaunted space beautification
skills to the effort. Tiggrrr Fearless and the ever vital Freek
Factory Dancers will be afoot to aid in the instigation
of delightful madness, shrouded in the crafted couture of
Boring Inc. and the radical hair creations of Dana Divine.

Freshly back from Black Rock City, Nevada, Disorient will add
a Glam-tech sensibility to the production as only they
can, bending your perceptions with inflatables and things
that go blink in the night. SF based visual artist Satsi
will send the event into orbit with his mind-altering
optical magic.

Joining Bassnectar on the main floor is very special guest The All Good Funk Alliance, championing the Nu-Funk sound emerging from D.C. and presently making big waves amongst the global beat cognoscenti.

I'm relatively new to Tribe, the rules, the options. Right now, it would be nice to meet locals instead of just reading profiles of San Fran people. Check out my album (lots of pics) and my profile, and say hi if you like.

JUNE 17th - Disorient, in association with Freek Factory and Kostume Kult, presents the NY COMPRESSOR
camp throw a righteous fundraiser for their mobile Disorient Express.
That's right, you might be able to go home and get some sleep this year
because we're taking it out of the dome and into the deep playa.

Be warned: it's just a dress rehearsal for the big show in the desert.
Held at a 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Brooklyn, this warm up includes
velvety house music, funky breaks, bright orange LEDs, large inflatable
installations, costumes, video styling, lots of blinking lights,
drinks, rituals, massage...and ridiculously large glowing bubbles! If
you're interested in what this Burning Man thing is all about, there
won't be a better preview this summer. If you've been, you already know
this is a must-attend event. Early arrivals can partake of a free vegan

Hello NYC/Party Tonight

I live in 718 but I'm down with 212, and I'm new here. I have a party I hold down the first Tuesday of every month at a Club called Bembe in Williamsburg and thought it would be a great way to meet some of you by inviting you out tonight.

The party is called FIre Pona Tuesday and takes place in one of the best kept secrets in NYC. Being at Bembe is like being on the islands, I spin classic soul and universal funk, and friend JB spins the best Roots and Culture Reggae. This will be our 5th party at Bembe since December. It's Free to get in and goes all night from 10pm on.

I work as a producer and handle development and marketing, blah blah blah, which means I have a Radio Show on Fridays on East Village Radio (www.eastvillageradio.com), and I host a lot of parties with young professionals all the time and all over the place not just in NYC. But in the end this is just an introduction. I'd love it for some of you to come out and introduce yourself to me or add me to your friends list.

So don't be shy, because clearly I'm not. If your into Live Music, good times, and Sunday BBQ's, you'll love the parties I throw. So I look forward to meeting some of you soon.

Peace,

Otis

Hello. Does anyone know what Inwood is like? I've lived in the area most of my life, and I've never been to Inwood except driving through.

Cheers,
Ruth

Hi everyone,

So glad you could make it - the code hated me when I created this tribe but it doesn't matter. What matters is you're here and that rocks. Post what you want, when you want.

Anything goes.

Yours,
-C.
