Howdy,
I have begun to get the ball rolling on starting a workshop and am wondering if anyone here would be interested in attending. I am in Menlo Park (30 minutes south of San Francisco). The workshop will start near the end of this month and would run for five sessions (three weekends, two week nights):
1) Design & History
2) Build
3) Build
4) Erection
5) Furnishing & Lighting
At the end of this work shop, you will have your very own Yurt that you can easily take camping. This design takes about 30-60 minutes to setup with two people.
This workshop is also a kick-off event for "YurtVille", a new BurningMan theme camp. YurtVille is a camp dedicated to people with Yurts. Feel free to join the YurtVille tribe for more information:
tribes.tribe.net/yurtville
If interested, send me a message. I would like to judge interest before committing dates.

Re: Building a Portable Yurt Workshop
Mon, April 3, 2006 - 1:44 PMSounds interesting.
What's the cost? Will people be expected to bring their own building materials and tools, or will some (or all of it) be provided?

Re: Building a Portable Yurt Workshop
Mon, April 3, 2006 - 1:56 PMBy the end of that first session, you will have a fully custom design, list of all the materials and parts needed for your yurt.
I will ask for a $75 donation (more will be appreciated). The $75 is suggested and I will not turn anyone away for lack of funds. This money will go toward buying a new drill press and toward the camp fund for YurtVille.
In all reality, this structure should cost you anywhere between $300-$500 depending on size, quality of materials and your ability to locate cheap supplies. It's also my hope that if enough people go in on this, we will be able to buy screws and wall/floor/roof material as a group and save costs by doing a bulk purchase. I found screws and the wall/floor/roof material to be a surprisingly large portion of the cost.
I will provide all tools needed on workshop days. Some tools that may be useful for when you take things home would be a drill, a jig saw and a paint brush.

Re: Building a Portable Yurt Workshop
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 9:01 PMI'm going to be unable to attend the class, but have you thought about selling the instructions/plans? -
-
Re: Building a Portable Yurt Workshop
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 8:53 AMThe plans are customized for everyone.
I have made an excel spreadsheet that figures everything out for you. You provide the basic details and it will calculate amount of wood required, lengths, etc etc.
Once it's better hashed out, I'll publish it.
I have no plans for selling the instructions / plans. The workshop is to promote YurtVille and YurtVille will only work if there are a lot of Yurts.

Portable yurt plans
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 1:20 PMI have a set of detailed construction drawings I made for my 16' diameter yurt, but they need some work before I can put them online. I want to make sure they're completely self-explanatory.
I wasn't planning to sell them - they were intended as a reference while I built my 16-footer - but by the time I polish them up and type up a step-by-step construction plan, they'll be worth something, I'm sure. I created the design from the best parts of several different resources, my own construction and woodworking skills, and what I felt was a good balance between quality construction and economic considerations, so I guess if anyone finds that the plans save them time or $, they can just paypal me a donation.
The plans should be done in a week or so. If anyone's interested, feel free to shoot me a private email (st_indigo <at> earthlink.net) and i'll send ya the link when they go live. -
