WELL I SEE THE YURT BUILDERS ARE HIBERNATING AGAIN. BEEN AWFUL WET HERE SO FAR THIS WINTER BUT MADE IT PAST CHRISTMAS AND SPRING IS AROUND THE CORNER. SO FAR MY YURT IS STILL STANDING FAST.

Hybrid lathe

I've been reading the discussions regarding lathe, cutting it from plywood or ripping it from boards.

I don't have the patience for such things, which is why I invented the bjurt (http://bjurt.com). I replace the continuous curved wall with eight square walls, with only one scissors per wall. Because I have fewer boards/poles, I can afford the cost and weight to use 3/4" EMT conduit.

But I still wonder if what I've learned inventing the bjurt can help conventional yurt builders as well.

What about using a combination of wooden slats and EMT or PVC pipe? Perhaps one in three or one in six slats replaced with 1/2" EMT.

Would that fortify the structure to the point that you could use knotty wood?

Thoughts?

zoning for yurt

I don't know much about yurts or legalities of living in yurts, setting up yurts and such on land. I really want to buy land, build a yurt for use in sacred ceremonies and healing workshops. Then in a few years when the house I live in goes up for sale I want to be able to live in my yurt if I have not already built another form of shelter on the land or have another living option elsewhere. The bigger picture of the dream is that the land where the yurt is, is the home to a healing center, retreat center. An eco-friendly place to offer healing, community, and education. What do I need to know about building a yurt? What legalities do I need to move through? any suggestions?

Where did everybody go

Is everybody sleeping or what. No post here in forever.Well the weather is finally changing.And my little wind test is over.I put my yurt up in the yard with just the roof in place to see how it would stay with just a few stakes tied to the tension cable and threaded down through the wall and the stakes drove in just under the wall.well it never moved so much as an inch.However the tarp didn't fair as well.sometimes it looked like a giant mushroom out there blowing in the wind.It lifted almost half the trusses off the wall but never caved in.Not bad for a home made camping yurt.i guess the modifications i made to the design were good ones.What i did different was drilled two sets of holes one just below the ring and one at the kahanna,and ran a rope all way around and tied it off this sorta bonded everything together so it couldn't fall apart. Well i hope this help wake this tribe up a bit take care Marshall

Acrylic Dome replacements?

5 or 6 years ago I got a Nestingbird Yurt and it was great - except the dome in the middle of the roof, fractured.
So I bought another one (for $500!) and yep, it partly fractured too.
In the 100mph crazy winds we had yesterday, it fractured all the way through and blew into the dog pen.
I now have a duct-tape dome and it continues to snow and rain (although thankfully the winds have died down.

I think the fracturing is due to unevenness of the insulation and can be changed, so am not sure it's a 'dome' issue, as much as a support issue.

Thing is, I need to get a new dome and they want $500, of course.
Does anybody have a better (less expensive) source of yurt domes?
The duct tape's giving way in the snow!

Bjurts

Hi everybody,

I've been a big yurt fan since last year's Burning Man. It was a very solid, comfortable structure, but it wasn't as easy to set up as I would have liked. The whole door frame and extensive use of wood just didn't do it for me.

So, I made something better, the bjurt.

But I can say it has a nice wide door, like drive your car in door...

Note that this isn't just a cheesy sales promotion. I publish plans in which individuals can make their very own bjurts.

Building a Yurt

So I am building a yurt for this year's burn and so far it is going pretty well.

I've resourced a few books and have learned quite a bit from them, as well as from my friend who is a cabinet maker and also from trial and error. I have completed the khana lattice work, the doorframe, rafters, hub and began work on just about everything else.

I would also like to say that as far as books go, although it is great for ideas, Tipis and Yurts, is probably one of the most screwed up sources for references you will find. The measurements the author (Blue Evening Star) provides vary from paragraph to paragraph. She contradicts things from one page to the next. And even her text conflicts with the pictures shown.

We are about to sew the panels for the canvas and I cut them today at about 3% larger in order to wash them for shrinkage.

One thing I am curious about is the preferred method for fastening the rafters to the hub. I have seen examples where hinges were used and where they were slotted. Anyone want to make any recommendations?

Also I plan to have a hole in the canvas and would like to secure it to the wooden hub, which I have made a circular opening which opens by turning. I'm thinking of using heavy duty snaps. Any suggestions?

So, I'm reading all about the Yurt and while everyone is convincing me how fab and warm they are in cold, blustery weather, I need to know how one keeps cool in a Yurt? I'd love to put one up in Arizona and I can't find any info about cooling (other than an a/c unit. Ick.)

I was wondering if anyone has or does live in a Pacific Dome..and if this is not the proper tribe to post, im open to being referred to another that would.... i love th edomes and would like to put one up on my sisters land where she has offered me some nice open space...
i just might end up with a Yurt thought, i just cant make my mind up.. sometimes the lattis over the windows can be too much for me, where the dones have a half panal side of clear plastic...

Widening the door.

I finally got rid of the last big encumbrance to actually building a 16' yurt and am going to start cutting lathe this week. I am considering the idea of a double door or French door setup as I like the idea of being able to open it up to the world. Most likely I will do a single 36" door to start but was wondering what people think of a door frame with 4X4 center post and 2, 28" doors?

This will be a portable setup too, for use as a booth at Ren fairs and our main living space at Burning Man.

Swimming pool covers as roofs

Somebody here said they used a swimming pool cover as a roof. Care to elaborate? I have been looking at them on line and they come in various sizes and types. If I am building a 16 footer, would the 16 foot cover be the right one? I read it is 20' finished. Would hang down 2 feet all around, or does that get eaten up by the ceiling height? Also, Would this also make a good ground cloth?

I am currently looking into tin roofs. They seem to last a long time, and are water proof. The only real problems I foresee is how loud the rain would be on them, and hte wind tearing them off. All of which with a little creativity I can get through. Any other thoughts that I might have missed. Thanks.

A few questions about yurt consruction & used yurts or gers

Hi all!

I am new to the group. I was curious, if any of you might be willing to help me out here, about a few things;

1> I was wondering, for a 16' or 14' yurt or ger, what the minimum number of "slats" one must use to support a yurt this size with canvas walls? I think I remember seeing the number 96 somewhere but in some of the photos I am seeing it's looking like some people use less. I am not looking to live in a yurt permanently or even for an extended period. I am looking for one that I can set up and break down rather easily that takes up as little space/weight as possible and would be strong enough to withstand wind and warm enough to keep the heat in but I will only be using it for 3 days at a time maximum, (and breaking it down and setting it up each weekend).

2> can a yurt or a ger be made a little taller by "tightening" it up? My husband is 6' 5" so wall height for most designs is looking a little iffy.

3> does anyone know of someone wishing to sell or trade for their yurt or ger? I am even open to buying or selling for a frame, (then I would buy the wrapping/canvas on my own.

Yurt Dog House

I've been hankering for a yurt for the last seven years or so, but apartment living just doesn't give me the space to build one. Sigh...

So I've decided to try making a miniature yurt - maybe 3 1/2 or 4 feet in diameter - for my puppy, who is getting too long for her kennel.

My concern is that the khana would not be flexible enough to make a circle that tight. Should I perhaps use willow or hazel rods instead of lathes? And where would I find hazel rods in the desert of the Great Basin? I don't suppose that dowel rods from the hardware store would have enough flex. OTOH, it doesn't have to be very strong. Perhaps I can just go as slender as I need to, and lash it all together.

Does anyone have any reccomendations? Should I scale down the measurements by any other method than halving the specifications for the 8-foot yurt? Would 2 or 3 khana sections be better than one? (Is it even theoretically possible to have only one khana section?)

Yurts vs. Domes

I’m new to the world of alternative shelters and require some advice. I’ve done some preliminary research into Domes and Yurts, trying to figure out which one is better. So far this is what I’ve found out

1) both Yurts and Domes have pro’s and Con’s so its not really correct to say that one is better then the other
2) it looks like Yurts might be a better choice in cooler climates while Domes seem to serve well in hot and dry areas
3) Yurts have a limit (up to this point) on their complexity while Domes have been explored to extreme levels with some crazy and large designs. This is probably because Domes have been in the North American mindset since the 1960’s.
4) Yurts seem to be a more stable structure for a compatibly priced Dome. Of course the high end Dome structures are as stable as they come.
5) Building underground seems to be a bad idea due to mold so that option is out
6) Yurts seem to cost less then Domes but have a smaller following. I’m guessing that this is because they haven’t been around North American as long as Domes
7) The information on how long you can live inside a mid-size Dome or Yurt is hard to come by. Some people seem to believe that both Domes and Yurts are temp shelters while others say they are permanent. Still not clear on this issue

There are a few other issues but that’s some of the main points.

I want to know what people here think. Any major issues I should look at? I’m looking to have a structure up in the Pacific Northwest type of climate (cool and wet with some snow in winters, summer is dryer but still humid, it is a rain Forrest after all). Also looking at a dry sunny region like southern California.

If anyone has any Links that they think I should be reading or suggestions please reply.

Anyone built a yurt from scratch using plans?

how much did it cost for materials?

and how long did it take in hours approximately?

Cleaning the canvas?

I'm going to be fixing up a yurt to move into, and on the outside, the canvas has streaks of mold and mildew. What is a good, safe, nontoxic way to clean this off? I'm thinking borax, or hydrogen peroxide... anyone have experience with this?

Building a Portable Yurt Workshop

I have begun to get the ball rolling on starting a workshop and am wondering if anyone here would be interested in attending. I am in Menlo Park (30 minutes south of San Francisco). The workshop will start near the end of this month and would run for five sessions (three weekends, two week nights):

1) Design & History
2) Build
3) Build
4) Erection
5) Furnishing & Lighting

At the end of this work shop, you will have your very own Yurt that you can easily take camping. This design takes about 30-60 minutes to setup with two people.

This workshop is also a kick-off event for "YurtVille", a new BurningMan theme camp. YurtVille is a camp dedicated to people with Yurts. Feel free to join the YurtVille tribe for more information:

Costco Yurt

hello all
-- this would seem to be an appropriate forum for me to share details of my current project.
For the past several years I have helped errect and disassemble Costco carports being used as temporary shelters at weekend outdoor community events. I was impressed by their usefulness, stability, ease of transport, etc., so when they came on sale, I bought one for myself. Within a month, a friend put out a request for use of one and I volunteered mine. While putting it up ang taking it down it occured to me that perhaps the component pieces could be used in a different configuration to create a different shape of shelter other than the designed 10 x20 ft box.
Yurt design seemed a good way to go.
First step was to fabrcate a peak connector. Several attempts yeilded a 6" long piece of 4" diameter pipe with 8 angle cut small diameter short pipes welded around the circumference.
The 8 roof tubes used for the slope are each extended with one of the horizontal roof tubes.
The wall/roof connectors are connected by 8 pvc conduit pieces about 9 feet long. providing enough bend for a circular wall top.
Voila-- a 22 ft diameter, 12 ft to peak, Costco Yurt.
Some quick practical paper orgami showed that two 20 x 20 tarps cut diagonally provide adequate roof coverage.
I am still working on what kind of bracing will be required for structural integrity, but the basic framework was easy.

My new Yurt

Here's a little Yurt I built out of 2x4s and some ply wood. This is a purely recreational structure intented to be go camping with me on the weekends.

It takes 30 minutes to setup and an hour to put away.

I appologize for the lack of index images or thumbnails.

The Yurt is not done yet. I'm building out a new & better floor, shelfs, custom low-voltage yurt lighting and a roof vent.

I used "The Construction of a Yurt" to help with the design of the roof ring. http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/articles/yurt/

The book "The Complete Yurt Handbook" (available on amazon.com) provided a good histroy and assisted with how to place furnature within a round structure.

The coverings and the lathes are of my own design (think : graph paper and pencil).

I am currently unhappy with the door frame. That will be redesigned and rebuilt once I have more free time.

Concept & Design took one month (a night or two a week). Construction took 3 weekends and a few days after work over the course of a month.

I have not made one, but I have a new 30 footer coming in Oct...does anyone have any real experience here building the deck (I want a square 36 foot to a side) and suggestions for something less than permanent?

Yurt Life? and a few random questions...

Anyone know of any sites that show how long a yurt can last? I'm thinking that you may need to replace the roof and walls every x number of years. Even some good Yurt info sites would be great. I've been too all the manufaturerer sites but would prefer independant ones.

I'm currently in Houston Texas and am SICK of this place. I've put my condo up on the market and once it sells I will need a new place to call home. I even quit my job to force me to move as its too easy to stay here in my condo otherwise. Buying a few acres somewhere and putting a 30 foot Yurt on it looks very attractive to me.

I'm from louisiana but would perfer to not move back there. How are land prices out west? Anyone know of any good deals for 5 acres or so?

I should mention that I am looking for something that will be seismically and wind stable, without setting, if I can avoid it, perm pylons. If I must go the sonotube route, ok, but would like to use shallow footings and precast piers. Thanks.
