Hey Kids

As our first show back on American soil we are proud to be playing at the monthly Alt Country night at the El Rio in historic San Francisco. We will be playing songs from the "one true set list" which carried us though our Japan Tour. It is beer stained, ripped in half and tapped back together with duct tape, and it's got some serious mojo! We will be sharing the stage with the down-home, old-timey, country flavored stylings of the J. Byrd Hosch & the Tater Trio, plus the original alt country outfit T&A. Wednesday also happens to be 'Tiki Tastic Happy Hour night', cheap Mai Tais all the way till last call! Woohoo!

So pull on your cowboy boots, grab a pinch of chew and come on down!

This Weekend!

Hey Kids,

Here at 5 Cent Coffee headquarters, we've got a whole hog-pen of things cooking, all over Northern California this weekend!

First, on Saturday March 15th we are thrilled to return to the beautiful town of Sutter Creek to support the fabulous Dave Hanley Band (feat. the legendary Romona Howe on fiddle). That's all going down at a little bar called Tilley's (info below)

Next, on Sunday March 16th we will be playing live on the air at OzCat Radio in Vallejo on the Mike Vinyl Show! We should be on the air around 1pm to play a few songs and have an interview with Mike. We can also have a studio audience, so feel free to swing on by! (the station is about 3 blocks away from 5 Cent Coffee HQ, so there will be a post show Cervesa or two on our porch I'm sure.) Finally, Sunday evening March 16th we will be heading on down to San Francisco for a "Pre-St. Paddys Show" at the Plough and Stars! Duck on Bike, our extraordinary manager has set up an all star party in San Francisco at the fabulous Plough and Stars on Clement St, and we're thrilled to be sharing the stage with some of the people who have helped us along these past two years -- the ukulele and jug band community in the Bay Area is hands down, the most friendly and warm bunch of people on the planet. It is these sort of folks who we drew on to perform last year's "Everything' a Dollar in this Box - The Songs of Tom Waits on Cheap Instruments" -- the show turned out to be a hit, and we can thank our musical community of friends for that. From "Uke-y Stardust" to the SF Jugband Festival, we've been lucky enough to be included on the bill with such local luminaries as Tippy Canoe, the Uke Apocalypse, Dogs in Doublets, Hobohemian's Boxcar Band, Just Henry, Liquor Cake, Amy Zing and The Goat Family. So we've asked them to come out and play a few tunes for us! Woohoo!

Sacramento Jug Blow Out!

5 Cent Coffee will be playing in all corners of the Bay Area in the next three days including all venues with with the words "Plough" and Probably "Star" as well.

First:
TOMORROW NIGHT: (Thursday Dec 27th) we will be playing at the Starry Plough in Berkeley with Freddy Parish and Winter's Fall. Come on out and have a post holiday cup of neo-skiffle junkyard blues!

Next:

First check us out at "Tell it on Tuesday" a story telling night at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts at 2640 College Avenue, in beautiful Berkeley California. We will be opening the night with a half hour set, then we can all sit back and listen to some of the Bay Areas finest storytellers. It's all going down on Tuesday September 25th at 7:00pm sharp! Finally Recording!

Hey 5 Cent Coffee fans!

Thought I'd post some news here that is not just a show blurb. We here at 5 Cent Coffee headquarters are very excited to finally be working on our debut album! The we are currently rehearsing a dozen or so of your favorite songs for a live recording up in Fort Bragg with the very talented David Brown. We're shooting for a weekend in November and assuming it all works right we'll have a finished product by the end of the year!

The sound we are going for is a Leadbelly, John Lee Hooker, Blind Willie Johnson kind of feel, with a one take, one mic in the middle of the room vibe. However we will be doing all of this on more modern and sophisticated equipment, so it will be a really cool experiment in creating a simultaneously Hi-Fi and Lo-Fi recording.

We're gigging like kittens in anticipation. More news as it develops!

Bebo White of the California Jug Band Association recently said of 5 Cent Coffee: "Your set was why I keep loving the music! Jug band meets The TigerLillies and Tom Waits is a combination that cannot lose."

5 Cent Coffee is dirty ukulele blues with howling vocals; sometimes a sad accordian wails, sometimes your toe taps to a twang. Moody and candy-like, we write songs that cast you back into another time. We are inspired by sounds as diverse as the clang and thump of old jug and skiffle bands and early 20th c. American music to Kurt Weill and Lottie Lenya to Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and the Tigerlillies.

We are dedicated to organic old fashioned sound; an amalgamation of a by-gone nation, mixed with the fresh scent of a smile or the wail of a lament. Ukulele driven original material with stand up bass and melodeon - throw in a washboard, a kazoo - some junk, an old shoe, wear a grumpy hat, cry a tear or two, and you're there by the side of an old dusty highway...

Here's the official missive from my good friend the Uke Apocalypse:
For the last time, the Ukulele Apocalypse presents...
"The Rise and Fall of Uke-y Stardust and the Spiders From Mars"

About a year ago I had a stupid idea, "We should," I thought, "get as many ukulele players as we could to play one seminal classic rock album from beginning to end." There was no question which record it should be.
This stupid idea exploded. Bands were formed, friends were made, projects grew out of projects and eventually, the whole thing had gained a life of its own. In this last year as joint productions we've performed Ukey Stardust 4 times, "Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry", "Everything's a Dollar in this Box - Tom Waits on Cheap Instruments", "Plinkity Pleasures 1 and 2" and about a zillion other gigs all around the Bay Area... it's been a crazy year...and now it's time to move on, (after all, we all do write our own songs!) but not without propping the Starman up one last time to say goodbye.
So here it is...
The show that started it all, from the creators of "Purple Rain - When Ukes Cry". It's an entire evening of David Bowie, culminating in his glam rock masterpiece, from beginning to end, on ukulele.

He's having a bad go of it lately and we want to put an end the troubles with an evening of some of the finer local music you're gonna be able to see all stacked up like this. Party under the stars in glam style at Chabot Space & Science Center with an unusual and unique live musical performance:

The Rise and Fall of Uke-Y Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, presented by Ukulele Apocalypse (KellyMcCubbin); including performances by Megan Lynch, Uni and her Ukulele, Tippy Canoe , 5 Cent Coffee, Amy Zing on saw, and Henry and the Heymen.

Music Starts Promptly at 8:30pm!!!

That's right, it's the whole Ziggy Stardust album presented in its entirety, completely on ukulele! Come sing along and dress the part. Show us your glittery glam David Bowie style while tasting local beer and food. Sample beer from Buffalo Bill's Brewery; coffee from Uncommon Café; and dessert from CremaLite café.
This event includes telescope viewing (weather permitting), admission to the entire museum and all our hands-on exhibits, PLUS a SonicVision planetarium show, the coolest digitally animated alternative music show in the Bay Area, designed by Moby. www.chabotspace.org/sonicvision/
