Biochem starts monday here at EWU(pronounced Ewwwwwww.) and im not wooried, but thats mostly because I havent heard anyone wax edgar allen poe about it. Nor for that matter HP lovecraft about it(the fungi of yuggoth removed the skin from the poor biochem student and replaced it with wings made of Velveeta cheese). Im not sure what the intention of biochem is. could someone enlighten a good little Ochem student(who is all about the electron density, claisen condensation and bromination)?

If ochem is a neutron star then biochem is a blackhole, which is why you haven't heard anything about it.

Biochem is the chemistry of cells. I haven't taken it but I don't expect you'll learn much in the way of new reactions (unless you haven't taken inorganic chemistry - the catalytic sites are mostly organometallics). What you should learn (read: memorize) is a lot of reaction systems: IE this system of enzymes do transformation X, and that system of proteins produces signal Y.

Could be wrong, afterall this is just an educated guess.

Go out and buy/steal a huge wall poster of the metabolic pathways. We had to memorize all of the reactions in the cell. The poster is worth its weight in booze.

As an added bonus, if you stare at the chart long enough while chanting Redox reaction equations, you can actually summon an Old One to grant your wish... provided your wish is to have your brain turned to velveeta. Biochem is hard on the grey matter.

Our prof had some fun with us today. I think. I thnk his idea was to give us a short sharp shock of a quiz on the second day of class, and to see how we reacted. One person turned in a blank page, and several others only did half. I didnt think anything was over the top, but I did have a bad time remembering nomenclature of organic compounds. I know its simple stuff, But I spent most of my time going over mechanisms, which is the fun part, plus is what I heard is what he likes to test on.
I didnt know ANYTHING was worth its weight in booze. wow. OK. That'll be an easy fifty bucks IM guessing. Worth it really if it knocks my understanding up a point or two.
Any other solid points about biochem as taught by english professors from Exeter U.?

No, his real reason was to get rid of as many students as possible. And no that isn't mean: he is doing himself and his students a favor - those who aren't ready or willing to put in the work are going to fail anyway, if they drop now it costs them nothing.
