Kiriyama will be touring US and Mexico on confirmed dates in March 21-22nd. It will be his rare apperance in States.
After having moved to the city of Oerebro, Alex discovered his predilection for synthesisers as a result of Weirdo Beardo having introduced him to the world of sequencers in the Little Blue Men studio. Years have passed and today Alex a k a Kiriyama is one of the co-founders of the Swedish power house Devils Mind Records and the studio group Checkpoint Music. He's frequently collaborating with French producer Hishiryo which has resulted in a number of co-produced tunes having been released, all of them comprising Japanese themes and East Asian influences.
Although it's common that people categorise Kiriyama as nocturnal music, Kiriyama's sound has a goaish slant today since goa trance was the music with which he fell in love during the mid 90s. With some ten tracks already out and more in the pipeline, he's currently working on his debut album which is planned for the first half of 2009. Moreover, he's currently compiling a CD of Scandinavian forest music for the Italian label Inpsyde Media.

US/Mexico Tour 2009

Hey mates!

Greetings from the other side of the pond. I hope that everything is well with you guys. I'm posting here to update you on next year's little adventure of mine. I'm crossing the pond in February to do a tour in the US and Mexico for some six weeks before heading off back to Europe. I'm taking a sabbatical year to live and work on music in Barcelona.

The confirmed dates are as follows:

Feb 28: Austin, TX
Mar 7: Toluca, Mexico
Mar 14: Sonora, Mexico
Mar 21: Cleveland, OH
Mar 28: Asheville, NC
Apr 4: New York City, NY (!!) :)

As I am entering the US on the Waivers Programme, I'm allowed to stay for 90 days without having to apply for a visa. Hence, if someone is interested in taking the opportunity to have me over for a party after April 4, we could work something out, perhaps. Just let me know sometime during the next two weeks and I'll look into it.

At any rate, I can't wait to go back to the US!

... with only about 6 weeks before the general US election, it seems the right time to remind all US citizens in our tribe to PLEASE remember how important it is to vote this november!!

whether you consider yourself socialist, communist, capitalist, or simply a human being, we all benefit from the original philosophy of what the US stood for. I don't know anyone who would say they're down with what the US has become - but on Tribe, and in our own communities of freaks and creative souls, we still have the rights to bitch about it. Yet those rights are disappearing before our eyes, because we are all so disgusted with what is going on that we've checked out from our society.

We now live in an authoritarian oligarchy, run by corporations and their CEOs who are desperately trying to suck whatever they can out of our country before absconding with millions of our dollars and all of our dreams. Over the last weekend, NYC lost a huge piece of its economy :: like it or not, we are the financial beating heart of the universe - - and with Lehman Brothers in bankruptcy, and Merrill Lynch now being absorbed by Bank of America just one week after the govt. takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - - i don't think it's an exaggeration to say that our city is about to experience an incredible plunge into further desperation.

This is not just about money. I'm not begging you to vote so that you can secure your right to remain part of an imperialist capitalist structure that oppresses any nation that dares fight back. I'm asking you to move beyond a simplistic reaction to the decline of the financial industry and realise that as our economy falls, all liberal values will fall with it. The bigger effects of this economic downturn will be felt all thru our societal spheres.

This is what the Bush era was all about : inspiring FEAR nationwide, and then using that fear as a cloak to allow powerful people to hoard even more power and money, and use it to advance their own selfish ends without thinking about the future of our world, or even their own families' survival within it. That kind of selfishness has reigned supreme for almost a decade, and has led to some weird version of our society where the Christian Right has decided IT, and ONLY it, is "AMERICA." The republican party isn't even based on finance anymore; it's based on creationism, and something they call "pro-life" - i.e., support the gun-driven massacre of kids in poverty while denying all women the right to choose whether or not to have a baby (and denying them state benefits when you force them to give birth).

During the Bush era, support for the arts and for social justice has dissipated beyond belief..... but just WAIT to see what happens once these current economic disasters settle in.

I'm making the assumption that if you're a US citizen and you're here on Tribe, you probably don't support the John McCain/Sarah Palin ticket. That doesn't necessarily mean you are down with Obama/Biden completely, but I'm begging all of you to see past 'making a statement' by not voting, or by voting for Nader, or writing in Hillary's name..... Our country and our world is in terrible crisis, and if John McCain is elected to the Presidency of the United States, the little corners of goodness left in our nation will be squeezed into nothingness.

Sarah Palin mocks the US Constitution (she doesn't even believe prisoners should be read their Miranda rights), and John McCain is a power-hungry, militaristic, hypocritical human being. Obama may not be the messiah, but we can at least count on him having a soul lurking somewhere deep down inside of him. So, while I never stumped for a politician in my life, I am begging anyone who cares about free speech, or the right to choose your own way of life, or the freedom to exist as a creative creature (even within a capitalist society) to please get out and support the democratic ticket in November.

You can register to vote until October 3rd - please go to your state's website and make the move now to be part of the process this Fall.....! I guess this is a blog, not really a tribe post - but forgive the preaching and please try to understand why I need to scream this soliloquy to everyone i care about......

The Story of Wonderland

For everyone who was at the PLaNeT 6362 party on Saturday nite - - - it was definitely an adventure...... !!

To answer some of the questions we've been getting by email::

1) We shut the doors at 2am because we already had 350 people inside, which excluded a lot of the trance community who tend to come late to parties. We did, on the other hand, have so many new faces and that was great to see! Capacity at Wonderland is 350-400 but we felt any more bodies would make it impossible for people to enjoy themselves. We had warned people about the capacity issue on the forums; so we're sorry if you were among the 'excluded' - there were at least 60-80 people that had to be turned away....

2) Wonderland was entrusted by us to provide security for this party - and were to be paid for this service. Unfortunately they did not do so. They told us only on the day of the party that were not providing the 2 people they had promised us, which put us in a tough spot. It was impossible for us to go out and find our own security within 4 hours of the doors opening!! But sadly, that meant that we had trouble with the local authorities. Several police officers, making their normal rounds of the neighbourhood, saw several young guys (18 year olds) drinking beer on the sidewalk outside the venue; and several others were peeing against the wall. These are "ticketable" offences in NYC that should have been stopped by venue security. The police had every right to come in and bust the party, based on that.

Several uniformed officers walked into the party and saw weed everywhere. Obviously, they had to do something about it - that's their job. We understand that. I told them that I was an organizer of the party, so they should take me as the responsible party rather than arresting 300 party goers. They were happy with that; and therefore they let the party go on.

They also arrested the venue manager on the same charge as me; and they took 3 of our guests on weed charges. We were all handcuffed in the station til morning, and we'll all have to make a court appearance in a few months. Hopefully we'll all be ok. So, this is the 'real story.'

3) The party vibe was of course affected by the incident with the police - how could it not be???!!!! Vish didn't get to play his set because he came to the station to make sure I was ok ;-))) .... LAB had to rush to play early when Vish took off; and Jonathan had to fill in early as well. Obviously we're sorry for that, but we're also glad we didn't have to throw everyone out into the night at 2am when the police came!! We tried to make the best of a bad situation...... Everyone seemed to still rock out, even if it wasn't an ideal situation.

Unfortunately, we were wrong to trust Wonderland with the safety of all of you. This is the lesson of the party. In the future, we'll stick to nightclubs where we can ensure your safety and security, and where we'll have plenty of room for our growing crowd. We don't really like clubs - but what to do? This is NYC 2008. :-)))))

What happened to MUSiC in 2007?

Yesterday vish and I spent a really quiet Christmas - in which we spent more time painting deco for the next party than doing anything else. It was a beautiful day in New York, and I was grateful for a bit of vacation from the otherwise very busy life that we lead here! It was a day full of peace and reflection.

One of the things we spoke about was music. We both can't wait for the next party here in NYC on 1/19, and we are currently planning a party for Goa in February which is also getting us very excited about heading out to India soon. But on the darker side of things, we couldn't help lamenting 2007's releases. The last year seemed to be dominated by far too many V/A releases that sounded like they'd been thrown together from odds and ends left at studio doorsteps around the world, without much caring, finesse or love. We are of course happy to see new artists come onto the psy scene - - this is what keeps our world moving, after all!!! - - but we are saddened to see so little time and practice going into their production.

It's a double-edged sword when new or 'net' labels put out new artists' music. On the one hand, these labels give us a massive gift - because we, as the public, have the opportunity to discover new talent worldwide. I wouldn't have encountered LAB if it weren't for the Earth Mutations album put out by Dark Life Records in late 2006 (effectively early 2007) . LAB stood out like a bright flame in the night sky - because his two beautiful compositions were nestled in among a truly poor bunch of other tracks.

But despite the few 'discoveries' I made, I hold these labels responsible for accelerating the deluge of poorly constructed, half-baked music that has flooded the nightpsy scene in the last year. I was just on the SGOA tribe where people were speaking about the best work of 2007 - and I found myself unable to resist praising SIlent Horror's album to the high heavens - and thanking Devil's Mind for caring enough to put out only a few really good albums and V/As over the years, instead of bombarding us with release after release of poor music. That late Silent Horror release was the only thing that gave me hope in 2007 - - unless of course I count the tracks that artists around the world gifted to 6362MetaForce for our Summer compilation, or the 2 Parvati V/As that soothe me whenever I need a boost, or some single tracks I've heard buried within lackluster V/As.

Often when i bring up this subject of 'quality' - I hear a lot of responses in defence of these less-demanding labels and of new artists. People usually talk about "experimental" music, "underground" music, and so forth .... And I certainly understand where these responses come from. Firstly, we're a supportive community - - that's the essence of the psy scene. Second, we ARE underground - - about as far as you can go, in terms of music. I understand all of that.

But I also have loved and been part of this music for a long time now. And this rush to production and release, both by labels and new artists, only creates a body of empty sounds for us to dance to.

Psy is complex music. It takes a long time just to learn to HEAR the music in order to DJ it beautifully - - to construct a journey, to mix the tracks flawlessly, and to enjoy the full-power experience behind the decks. Production is yet another higher level along that route. Certainly some artists can walk into a studio their first day, and demonstrate a natural knack for this stuff. But even those natural artists must work hard to create a truly great track. A genuine artist - someone who cares deeply about his the creative gifts he or she gives to the world - cares enough to perfect his or her work before begging for worldwide release. And a label that cares about its mission in the world has the duty to work with the artist to make sure every track is a masterpiece.

I'm writing this today because the new year is starting soon, and I really hope something changes. I don't mean to sound so negative - - in fact, I feel very excited about the new year and all of the promise it holds!! But I hope our community starts caring more about the music it hears, and I hope artists start caring more about the tracks they feel they are ready to give to the world. Above all, I hope that labels take up the important responsibility of quality control.

Without that, we are not 'underground' - - we're just a bunch of small-timers.

But to end back on a more positive note, 2007 did bring us Silent Horror's album, and a few other compilations with some real gems of tracks. I look forward to seeing the next installments from those artists. I'm nothing if not optimistic about the world - - but I firmly believe that without a grain or 2 of cynicism and criticism, we'd all just be sweet cows, munching in the fields as they turn to industrial sludge all around us.

I would genuinely like to know what other people think about this. I've spoken to some people at our parties and at other parties in NYC and CT, but I would love to hear more. Do you agree or disagree? Do you prefer being in charge of the genre's evolution by sifting through the piles of V/As yourself, or are you like me, yearning for a little help & guidance????

Worldwide trance consciousness post-Pune....

Some of you may have heard about the Pune bust that happened in India last month - 280 people were arrested, including some of our friends who had just played and/or stomped at the 6362MetaForce Maha Shivratri TaaNDav a few weeks before....

Now that everyone is out on bail, we feel it is safe to discuss what has been happening in India around this event. I had removed all posting related to the TaaNdAv on this tribe earlier because we'd been told we needed to be careful about being spotlighted by the Indian authorities a "drug organization" as opposed to the music lovers' organization that we are..... Speaking out and attracting attention is not the Indian way; we would have only made things worse for our friends by 'standing up', American style... ;-)

The Indian news media covered the "Pune rave bust" ad infinitum... citing ungodly amounts of drugs seized and other false information... but one member of our 6362MetaForce tribe here, and one who was with us in South India last month, sent this article from TEHELKA (a more socially-conscious news organization) that really gave me hope, and I wanted to share it with everyone here.... as Prash wrote: "In the aftermath of the pune bust, here's the only article that doesn't conform to the convenient 'lock up all evil trance listening maniacs' theory currently being tom-tommed by the Indian media."

Many of you may not feel connected to India... but 6362MetaForce was created in that country, and as residents/citizens of India as well as the US, we are strongly connected to the roots of the worldwide trance movement there. Things have changed drastically from what they were in Maharashtra State (where the cities of Bombay and Pune are located) - and in Goa, for that matter, where trance parties first started liberating souls in the early 90s..... but we keep the faith! Seeing this article in the media helped bolster that faith and encourage us that our spirit survives, and that intellectuals can see us as we are:: a social movement that uses powerful sound waves as our tools of connection and liberation. We are the inheritors of a revolutionary spirit that has run through the ages.

And even if india doesn't 'speak' to you - the plight of our brothers and sisters who were arrested, harrassed, beaten and forced to sign false confessions is cause for us to come together in the name of worldwide FuLL PoWER!!!

Raves aren't drug-fuelled orgies or a screen for on-the-sly sex, youngsters tell Paramita Ghosh. They're about the need for a subculture

Rave, in the popular imagination, is deeply purple ? young, noisy, without structure, dangerous. Sex and drugs are thought to be the gateways to this hedonistic universe, much like rock-n-roll in the 50s was thought to be about subversion, gangsters and fast cars. Time to clip the pace, decided the Pune police last week, and a raid party in civilian clothes descended on a rave venue on Holi. Young people were herded off to the police station, they faced the media ? and the music.

The media rolled off fantastic figures. "Fifteen hundred units of lsd were reported to have been found. There were 300 of us, so that means five bottles each," says Prakash, one of those picked up. "Do you know what five bottles can do? You die or go insane." To make matters worse, his face apppeared on TV. "I've had people coming up and asking, what are you on. I smile and say, just the music." Like most ravers, he feels he and his friends are victims of mindsets.

Music, not drugs, youngsters say, is what draws them to raves, gives them a community and a language beyond words. Neel, a first year ba student, says: "Words are subordinate to the rhythm in rave. There's no language, no barrier, and that's why rave culture is so big. The connection is through music; it helps you know where you stand and that everyone's stories are the same. These are big realisations. Raves eliminate categories, it's collective consciousness. It's a high without drugs."

Non-ravers are most likely to trip hard over ideas like 'connection' and 'collective consciousness', but ravers take them very seriously. The wordless tracks of trance and the high-voltage beats that range from 125-200 bpm, a steady 4/4 kick filled with layers of analog sounds and samples, make a few solid aesthetic points. They will not entertain. They will not perform. They will not pretend. Reena, a 22-year-old graphic artist in Delhi, says of her rave initiation: "For the first time in my life, I felt I belonged. The connection is important for us. Don't you wish this image drama would stop? Don't you wish you had a spiritual family? Where has this world gone wrong? In the end, it's answering the bigger questions that helps you solve the smaller ones. Before you rubbish us, you've got to come see for yourself."

The 'subversive' nature of these gatherings may make colourful copy, but it's an exaggerated picture. The rebellion is more a means of coping. It's the last flush of post-school, pre-job jitters. It's a tribe struggling to draw a map to ease their entry into the 'real world'. Sandy, a journalism student in Mumbai, says the individualism of college life was a culture shock after school. "I needed a space where I was surrounded by people who would reinforce me, tell me they were on my side." Raves are in that sense, not anti-establishment but a defence against it, against alienation, a reaction against everything and nothing. Alienation is socialisation gone wrong. It's no party. Everyone wants to belong but everyone is always a little late.

Unlike its popular image, a rave is always on the wrong side of cool. The nightclub is the rich kid's hangout. A rave is inclusive and unless you have a firang dj as chief entertainment officer, it is not a big-ticket affair. Polish, at raves, is unimportant, even suspect. "In a club, I feel boxed-in and rated. The perfume you wear, the cash in your pocket, is the measure of your membership," says Reena. "A rave is the only place where a 15-year-old can sit with a 72-year-old and have a one-on-one connect and not even notice the age gap. If you look at someone and smile, they smile back. Sometimes the music gives us messages, sometimes the people do."

What kinds of messages? Well, not the sort that make you wink. Sex on the dance floor is a classic strand of the conspiracy against rave, feel long-time ravers. "We dance facing the dj, not each other," says Sheetal, a 24-year-old club manager in Bangalore. "Sex is not on our minds. Ever. We are open to it, but that doesn't mean it's the scene we're going for. If you want to stop the young from having sex, hip-hop parties are a better hunting ground. I've been hit on more at clubs than at a rave."

So are drugs, booze and sex the sticks the State and other agencies of control use to beat rave-goers into submission? If they are, they're unlikely to work. "In rock concerts, discos and clubs, drugs are much more in circulation than at raves," says Neel. "Politicians are always afraid of those who don't follow the system they work so hard to hold up. It threatens their power, it upsets them. At the end of a week, what's wrong with a little garden party?" Subcultures are consolidated by hostility; a thousand mushrooms will, nonetheless, bloom.

Say what you want about Chavez, but I have to believe VenezueLA is one KiLLER place because it has produced some people of such incredible warmth, integrity and TALENT that there must be a LOT of goodness down there!!!

Vish and I just returned from the utter DeBACLE that was "Mental Soup 2" in Switzerland - ((as Vish says, "ALL Mental, NO Soup, NOT EVEN a fucking bowl!!")) - and we are still in recovery..... ;-) But in counterpoint to the horrible experiences we had there was our meeting with 6362MetaForce's Venezuelan warrior SAVINA and her best friend Mauricio :::: KiLLER PEOPLE.

Savi, for me, has been one of the bright spots on the psychedelic horizon for the last year.... Originally part of DarkOhm, Savina went out on her own and has also made one of the best tracks of the year (in my opinion) with Hishiryo as "The Gravedancers" - soon to be heard on our 6362MetaForce V/A.... But not only is she talented, she is full of integrity, has a great sense of humour, and is aLLLL around amazing....

Savina is just one member of Psykommunity - the Venezuelan underground psystomp collective ... And our experiences with them have been only wonderful so far - Oxidelic, Somarobotics, DJ Blade, and others..... Now this time we spent with Savina and Mauricio in the belly of the beast (Switzerland) only confirmed how blessed Vish and I feel to have been thrown together with this posse.

It's rare to find real friends in this world.... And for me, I can say that my one requirement of my friends and colleagues :: namely - that they be straight, honest and direct ::: seems often to be the straw that breaks the relationships that I try to build with people.

In the case of Psykommunity and our 6362MetaForce base in Venezuela, I have only absolute confidence that we now will build something really strong and beautiful together. To have this kind of confirmation in the real world of what we sensed thru the music - and through our connections on the often-deceptive internet - is really wonderful.

So:: now that I've put these feelings into words, I realise that maybe i shouldn't be upset with the Mental Soup organisers at aLL. Maybe I should thank them!! I didn't get to party last week, but I did get to meet Savina and Mauricio, which was one of the biggest reasons I had gone all the way to Switzerland to begin with. Maybe I didn't hear Savina play, but we still had the opportunity to meet, to travel the roads of Switzerland together, to trip out in Luzern together, and to realise that we are indeed the family we had hoped to be.

And since we didn't get to party together in the classic sense, it just gives me and vish a reason to think about a 6362MetaForce/PsyKommunity party in VENEZUELA!!!!!

Not a bad outcome, is it?!

it's a mix!

I just posted a mix that I started a while ago and finished a few days ago with the help of my cat. I couldn't make it to NYC for the 25th, so I did this instead. It's a touch on the frenetic side for the first little bit, but it chills out and grooves a little harder as it goes on. It's called Afraid of the Light, and it's posted at 0000aa.podomatic.com . It features tracks by Phyx, Pondscum, Hefty Output, Phobium, Silent Horror, The Andychrist (hehe, that's me), and others that inspire prowl-and-stomp related activities. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Even if you just tell me it was painful and sad (which it isn't... i promise). Hope you enjoy!

Opinions about WAV downloads with FLAC compression??

I just compressed, uploaded and downloaded my WAV files in FLAC - and I must say, the FLAC format compression is fantastic. It actually compresses the file by 25% without losing any audio quality....ZEROOO...just like a totally lossless zip file with actual compression in size...or you can directly play it in FLAC using a player ... PC is easier than Mac, but both work..

Has anyone out there used FLAC ?? ...i would love to hear from anyone who has opinions about it - good or bad...

THANK U to everyone who came out on Saturday night!! Forest Frequencies was an unforgettable experience for us and we hope the same for you! Being able to bring Kiriyama here was a really special gift for us and for the birthday man, Zoran... Kiri truly laid down an unforgettable live set - all constructed from scratch over a simple bass and kick, with a few deep atmospheres running on CDJ loops...

And not to mention the rest of the line-up, full of amazing people with fantastic talent - Yidam who flew in from Chicago to play with Rachel, Tachyon who played our first banging set, and Psyops who blew in from Philly with the amazing refreshing morning set with sounds we'd never heard!

There is an amazing, special feeling that descends over me after a great trance party... It's an incredible sensation of cleansing, regeneration, and mellow bliss... That feeling is what reminds me of how the music comes alive in a trance party - and of how powerful that music is...!!! Although I am one of those people who can find the most twisted sounds extremely relaxing - and I listen to trance music at all hours of the morning, afternoon, and night - the experience of that music in a party is totally different and incredibly special when shared with a group of like-spirited souls on the dancefloor.

The Deadly Down Under party last weekend at Studio B left me with this incredible blissed-out feeling. And for that, I am grateful to everyone who was there, everyone who participated in the music, the deco, the dancing, the chatting, the laughing! I needed it, and I thank you all for being there and being part of what was, for me, a truly great trance party.

I had my doubts before the party began. So many unexpected obstacles along the path to celebration!!! We had spoken to Luke (Pondscum) about coming here long back - way back in June or July, if I'm not mistaken - and we booked his ticket months ago. One of my absolute favourite producers, Luke is a huge talent on the trance scene, with a unique style that appeals to the darkest of dark psy lovers as well as the funkiest of morning music aficionados..... and not to mention, he is a fantastic guy with a great personality and killer sense of humour..... He was the perfect artist to bring in celebration of Vova's 35th and Vish's 30th birthdays!

Since we were bringing him all the way from Melbourne, we wanted to share him with more of the US - and what better group than Mindfull Productions?! Catalyx and crew throw crazy happy outdoor parties .. bringing Pondscum here together offered the perfect opportunity for us to come together and bring a great talent to the US from far-away Australia...... and from the MetaForce side, we wanted to give Luke an opportunity to play outdoors while he was here.... not just in cold NYC!

But somehow, the universe did not want to cooperate with us. First there was the difficulty in finding ANY venue in NY for this party; for some reason, our chosen date seemed an impossibility for every nightclub, loft, and warehouse in 4 of the 5 boroughs of NYC. Then, we had these ridiculous threats from angry full-on DJ's and jealous promoters that they were going to call the cops on our party and put our entire family and friends at risk of arrest...... THEN, lest we forget ::: after we convinced 3rd Ward to give us the date for the party, the place SHUT DOWN 4 days before the event and still remains closed until further notice....!!!

Crazy stuff..... and so many more insane things happened before this party - but there's no need to list them. You all get the point. I will say, however, that each time something bizarre happened, we had to laugh. We kept saying - either Deadly Down Under is going to be a total disaster, or it's going to be the best party EVER!!!

So now, i have to say::: for me, it was most definitely the latter.....!

Perhaps due to the venue change, this was a smaller party than our last two - we had only about 220 people. But somehow this party seemed to bring together the oldest tranceheads with lots of new faces. We were reunited with many old friends, while we also met so many great new people! Together, we danced thru the night surrounded by Chay and Uta's beautiful artwork - its magic enveloped us completely....

Vish and I were the luckiest of the group. We had the pleasure of spending a week with Luke, drinking as much beer as we could possibly fit into ourselves..... and we all had 4 days with David (Glowing Dragon) who came up from Mississippi and blessed us with his incredible power and goodness - and, of course, his SKiLLS! he is yet another special soul we have encountered along the adventure of MetaForce....

We now count these guys as family. Adding them in the line-up with Vish and Michael (Tachyon) conferred some very very very special vibe on us. A shared love of music was there, for sure - it's the cosmic glue of the trance community. But there was also a shared vision for what we can become.

At the party, this line-up in the main room was amplified by the great additions of the Gaian mind and Omnitribe crews, who transformed the chill-out room into a complete oasis. That too was special... and I hope we have them with us in many more parties to come.

Our small after-party took place in an incredibly special spot, a beautifully adorned basement - a visual and sensual feast created by Uta Bekaia with Chay's flourishes...... Booming sound, lots of beer, a pool table, and non-stop laughter and dancing.....

I think I can speak for myself, Vish, Vova , Michael and a few others when i say ::: we have been smiling ever since!!

Keeping the 'psy' in psytrance........ A note to the Underground....

Once upon a time, there was a regular rhythm and ritual to trance parties ....

12 - 2 am - warm-up night music...
2am - 4am - full-power dark night music....
4am - 6am could be anything ... but usually the more twisted the better, getting us ready for the sunrise... this was the original 'twilght hour' music
6-8am - the SuNRiSE set... welcoming the sunshine with tremendous energy and power, however the DJ chooses...
8am- 12noon - MORNING music.. still psychedelic but more gentle, perhaps more melodic but never formulaic....

Today things have changed dramatically . I'm sure some of our friends in the scene, and even some members of this tribe - would argue in favour of these changes as evolution. i, however, strongly disagree. I feel these changes have lessened trance as a genre and have stolen the psychedelic energy from our celebrations.

The formulas that have become known as "full-on" and (yes) "progressive" have striven to bring psytrance music up from the underground and render it more palatable to the mainstream. Quite simply put: today's "full-on" music is not psychedelic . Why, then, do full-on promoters and artists who are playing gigantic indoor venues for $40 a pop feel so strongly about supplanting what they call "DARK" music in the underground - and why do they feel so strongly about calling full-on music 'psytrance'?

This puzzles me to no end.

The drive for profit and celebrity - something that has overtaken the world in the last decade at a pace that is absolutely astonishing - has really beaten up on the trance scene. Creativity is now devalued; formula is king. Media and technology have made it ever-easier for charlatans to mess around with the underground - the place where creativity happens.

Easier-listening music, with simpler structures, and steadier beats that ressemble house music, these 'sub-genres' of full-on and progressive have moved into the trance scene with real force.... attracting many more followers and devotees than psychedelic trance ever did. Meanwhile, I'm now told that the music I listen to is called "neuro psy" , "dark psy" , "twisted psy"..... when it always just used to be called TRANCE.

And let's not forget the new sub-genre: TWiLiGHt music. This one kills me, too!!! - a new sub-genre that simply preserves psychedelic morning music - but by its very name, relegates that rich music to one set timing.... Kudos to the artists who are still making happy psychedelia - and my sympathies that you actually had to invent a new name for it, due to the incursion of formulaic "full-on"....!!

Here's an example of what i mean. Astral Projection's work of the late 90s was far more psychedelic than the Astral Projection output of today. The tracks that were new and sunlight -inspired back then seemed to be limited only by the technology of the time. Today, however, these same producers CHOOSE limitation over creativity. What was once psy morning music has become "full-on" - i.e., a formula for commercial melodic 'trance' music that has more in common with mainstream house music (a genre in which creativity has also stalled, by the way) than psytrance.

I know many people will argue with me, and vehemently disagree... but I am someone who used to listen to these 'morning' artists and love them. Even until 2003, the nightly DJ in our club in Bombay was a morning psy DJ, not a 'night' DJ.... he brought us all the best psy morning stuff, to the degree that i never really knew what weird transformation was happening to morning music out in the wider world. Whenever I went to an outdoor party, I expected to hear new and ever more evolving night music, and I expected twisted morning music followed by more chilled-out but still super psychedelic morning sounds. I was unaware of the "full-on" revolution until i got to NY and saw that "full-on" had made incredible inroads into the underground - supplanting our psychedelic sounds with simple structures.

Each time I make one of these strong statements about the state of trance, I know I'm asking for it. And i get it, especially by the little boys on isratrance. But if i can't state this on our own MetaForce tribe, where can I?

I always try to explain where my feelings come from. I'm sure some of you who have read earlier postings by me are sick of hearing it. But here it is again........:::: I used to work in mainstream music, and there is incredible talent and work being done there!!! There's nothing wrong with the mainstream - and I'm not advocating for the abolition of full-on and progressive music...! I'm simply asking that we, in the underground, reconsider the evolution of our scene and hold on to the parts that are worth preserving: ritual, respect, talent, and psychedelia.

It is up to us to keep the underground UNDERGROUND.

The underground is the only place where sound can really evolve. As I constantly repeat ::: the mainstream needs us to keep at our work so that the mainstream can watch us paint, listen to the music we make, eat the strange foods we cook, read the crazy words we write..... and then incorporate the littlest parts of what we do into the mainstream itself in order that it can take its baby steps forward.

Without the underground, the world cannot even stay at stasis, much less move ahead.
Without the underground, the world regresses.

So, when it comes to 'full-on' - and yes, i have to say it, the greatest misnomer of our times: "progressive" (unless we are talking about sensient or the other obvious exceptions to a general rule so please don't jump on my back... ;-) ... 'progressive' has suffered a lot of what psytrance as a genre has, with the incursion of a formula where there was only creativity before..... ) - I get bent out of shape. Simple structures and melodies made with a computer do not underground music make. And to see those simple tunes blottering out my beloved trance scene hurts like hell.

PARUS (Auraquake - San Francisco)

Brothers Mark and Valentin have been musicians since their childhoods in Latvia and formed the Parus project together in 2000. They released three tracks last year on the Auraquake compliation Sesmic Mood and continue to gain recognition through many excellent performances like the one they're sure to give us.

Vasily became a popular local DJ soon after moving here from Russia in 2001 and utilized his experience producing multifarious styles of electronic music to begin writing psytrance in 2004. Please be sure to bring plenty of your own supplies and containers to take everything back with you.

Although we promised you a GOA banger, we didn't mean to put you all in a monsoonal indian steambath in the back room... !! big thank you to the whole family for ignoring the heat and sweating it out under Sofia's gorgeous tunes ... All hiccups to be sorted out in the coming weeks as we build up to our next adventure...

And much LOVE to all of the fantastic beautiful full power women in both rooms... we all haven't seen so many gorgeous creatures stomping the SH*T out of the floor since INDIA.... !!

It's my great pleasure to present Naga Helix, an outdoor event in Northern California with 18 hours of psytrance from the renowned act Grapes Of Wrath and favorite local talent. Our Danish friends last visited the area three years ago and have only been to the country once since then so please take advantage of this rare chance to see them perform their incredible music live. The gathering will be in Belden, a resort town on the shores of the gorgeous Feather River Canyon alongside Highway 70. Camping and parking space is limited so please share tents and rides. Also make sure you bring swim gear to cool off and relax on the beach!

As the 30th is Naga Pachami (Festival of the Serpent) we are honoring these animals and all they embody. The snake's regenerative powers and waved motion symbolize the eternal spiraling of universal cosmic forces. Naga, the divine serpent, also represents the dormant Kundalini energy coiled at base of our spines which rises through and activates the chakras as we awaken to full potential. This entwined nature is also seen within the double helix of DNA, the fundamental path of life we travel towards higher levels of consciousness.

and since you're in philly and i'm in New York, and both of us had this feeling today, i'm posting my side of the story for the rest of the 6362 along with us... because we ALL need support in these apocalyptic times.....;-)

So let me share this:
Vish and I walked all over NYC today looking at the venues we used to use for parties way back when. We actually took off a day to do this, because recently we've been using more mainstream clubs, and we don't want to do that anymore. It's contrary to our culture, and influences the vibe at the parties in a negative way.....

But now i know why we fell into the trap of using those bright, cold and shiny spaces:
Mostly all of the old spaces are GONE.
Vanished.

We saw luxury condos where warehouses used to be, upscale cafes where cavernous band spaces used to be.....

Maybe this won't seem weird to any of you - and of course I know gentrification became a reality in NYC and many other urban zones long long ago. Luxurification, mcmansionification is ongoing - cyclical. We are all used to seeing this kind of thing.

But i can now testify: ManHatTTan is totally gone - absorbed by the dark side... !!
The island nation of Manhattan is now part of the rest of the United States... Alternative culture has left this place...

or else: alternative culture has been driven SO far underground that it can't be called culture at all....
The 'underground' is now SO afraid to throw a good BaNGeR of a party, or show its face, that it can't attract new members, and can't grow.

That's no longer underground - that's beaten down.

WWWoW. That is a revolting thought, isn't it?
And because this thought is so revolting, many of us prefer not to consider it. When we don't consider it, we don't act against it.
The situation only worsens.

Welllll believe me... some of us are considering this now....
Call us the defenders of the stomp.

Without DARKNeSS there is NO LIGHT!!!

From the times of my first psychedellic sounds in BOOmBay, just a 45 min flight from the trance temple destination of Beautiful Goa...............

Trance or "Psytrance" as we call it today (hahahahah what other kind is there?) has evolved in ways beyond our imagination. The technology, the complexity, the layers.... But even then, it was all about psychedellic sounds which took on a journey beginning in the night and ending in the day..............

NIght Music to Morning music and people from both tribes welcoming each other by stomping to both style babies of the same mother.

Darkness and Light have been living together since the dawn of time - not only in trance, in LIFE - so I don't understand why we have such a divide in the trance community. But, then I found happiness in this so called DARKKKKKK music...(hahhahah sounds so devious but it's nothing to be scared of) ... it is mind twisting with complex sounds for the experienced ear and what we call in Boom town Goa " FULL POWER".

Here is my point - I am here to help all the babies who want to give "dark" a shot and I will guide you through this seeming 'darkness' in whichever style you like it .....Happy...Twisted...psychedellic....Full power....and most importantly a Beautiful Psychedellic Goa Morning with all the ingredients of bulid-ups of Full-on (like they call it)...sharp beats ...melodic layers...but all of them presented in true psychedellic fashion.............

Come give it a taste....we have the best chefs in the world with all different dishes to offer..

The thing is, if you THINK you don't like Kindzaza.. probably you haven't been introduced properly to the man. And a psychedelic goa morning will change the way you think about what morning music should SOUND and FEEL like.

So back to the beginning: without darkness there is no Light... come see the blinding light in the FULL POWER world! uplift your spirit.... that's what it's all about...

like we say - Shiva has two sides: body dance and mind journeys.... you can't have one without the other. Try both and you can have it ALL!!

It's time to take back our world and move it ahead... in giant leaps and bounds....!!

Why this new tribe??
Because i nearly slit my throat in goa this year, until i remembered that goa is OURS, not "theirs."
Let "them" bring their club culture to the beach. Let the goan mafia take over for a year or two. No need for us to get so upset about the Borg-ing of trance - - because ultimately goa will survive, and the goa spirit will endure worldwide.

The music we make will continue to advance the human experience.

And parties?
Let us show them what a real party is....
