so my friend and i were diving at our favorite dumpsteraround 11p, or so and a guy came out all pissy saying we couldnt take the trash and we were on private property and such... we came back around 230 that night to get the goods but i was wondering how you guys and gals deal with threats of calling the cops and things like that. when do you think are the best times to dive.

Re: threats to call the cops
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 6:13 AMUnfortuntly, the guy is right. Maybe that they've had problems with trash being left, or mess being made.
I NEVER dive at night, it looks to others like your'e up to no good. It's also dangerous to the diver, anyone could be hanging around back there, and if something happened, with no one else around...
I usuly go 5-7 PM, the store is busy with people just getting off work, and often stores will dump thier trash just befor the after work rush.
And waiting till a later hour, gives everybody else a shot infront of you.

Re: threats to call the cops
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:49 AMIf someone says they are going to call the cops, then just leave. Most of the time its just a threat, and they don't call, and even if they do call, you're already outta there before the coppers come. Main thing is keep you dumpster area clean... then it doesn't bother people as much.
And, yes, I second the motion of diving during the day. Most people pay you no heed and don't really notice you... and it looks like you're supposed to be there. I always just march in, no matter if people are around or not, and look through the dumpsters. I've never been hassled...
Good luck! -

Re: being warned off
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 11:17 PMOnce the property owner or store manager comes out and tells you off, you have been given warning. At that point it doesn't pay, legally speaking, to give backtalk or cop to attitudes. Leaving quietly is the thing to do. That person, after all, holds the legal high ground in the event confrontation/cops takes place.
You won't win making a court case of it. Even if the charges are dismissed, as they often are, because the items in the dumpster are legally considered "abandoned property", you've still had to invest a bunch of time and maybe even lawyer fees. One way to head off troubles is to simply talk to the person in charge of the property beforehand to get their consent to salvage discards. Normally, if you show reasonable courtesy, and concern about keeping the place neat, they'll be glad for the chance to show their friendly human side.... and let you at it. -

Re: being warned off
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 7:20 AMIt's not "abandoned property", if it's still on your properity ! Which of course , the dumpster is. -

Re: being warned off
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 12:34 PM.....no but a good $5000/hour mafia lawyer can probably get you past that niggling little speedbump of "private property".... simply because the judge doesn't have all fucking day to hear bullshit over somebody taking a box of shelf-dated milk from a supermarket dumpster so he'll dismiss the dang shit because he has more important shit to attend to. -
