The Manifesto

Right.

If one more person tells me to "keep the shiny side up!" I'm gonna do a burn out on their Shi-Tzu.

"SSU" has become the biker's "have a nice day!". I've had it. It's fucking inane. I've been down and I'll go down again some day. Want to see my MRI scans? Suck it up.

No, no. Fuck you. We will no longer be told whether or not it's OK for us to get killed. OF COURSE WE"RE GOING TO TRY TO KEEP THE SHINY SIDE UP YOU IDIOT! But you know what? Shit happens. DO YOU THINK WE LIKE IT WHEN THEY CLEAN THE ROAD RASH OUT WITH THE BRISTLE BRUSH, DICK?

Reject simplistic platitudes and revel in the fact that you weigh the dangers against the joy of riding, and you make a conscious choice every time you get on the bike.

This isn't about wanting anyone to get hurt. Accept the possibility, ride smart, ride fast, and don't wear sneakers you stupid fucking squid.

Once you do stack it (and they've removed the steel pins) show off the scars, laugh, and get back on the bike. If you show up to Zeitgeist with crutches strapped to your bike I'll sure as hell buy you a round.

Rant about whatever you want, post scans of your x-rays/arrest reports, whatever.

I'm just glad I'm that I'm pretty tall, cause I'm an inch shorter than I used to be.

Well I'm glad my hands were INCREDIBLY beautiful, cuz now they're just average. (otherwise they'd be downright ugly now) :P

Losing height in your back is fine, the inseam is where it counts (believe me, I've nixed many a fine bike because of height issues)

          Rebecca,

You mentioned dropping many bikes due to height issues. I am still looking to find someone interested in doing a barter exchange with me - massage therapy sessions at their location for a dualsport motorcycle that will fit my relatively short height.

I just looked at the photos in your profile, and the type of bikes you are your friend are riding seem like what im looking for.?
Do you have much trouble with them relative to the height or weight issue of the bikes versus your physical stature? We may be around the same size? Im 5'5' and 130lbs.

I just visited with a guy who owns two BMW dual sport bikes, i forget which exact model, that he has taken across the whole country and ridden extensively on. He also has another mc which looks very much like the ones you have in your photos. I sat on these two different bikes and liked them both, though for my size the bmws felt too heavy.

How long have you owned the bike your riding in your photos? How does it work for city commuting on freeways, highways and city streets as well as back and totally unpaved roads?

What did you pay for yours?

sorry, when I said I'd nixed many fine bikes, I meant i'd passed them over because they were too tall for me. I haven't dropped anything because of height *yet.*

I don't know which picture you're talking about but I suspect you are talking about my DRZ and my old DR350.

Generally, the blue dirtbike in the newer photos is the DRZ400S. It is my all-time favorite motorcycle. It does a lot of things pretty well. It's not a race bike, it's not a touring bike, it's not a motorcross bike, but it could fake it at doing any of those things in the right hands. I've ridden it to Nevada and back twice. Many people will tell you it doesn't do the freeway, but I obviously don't agree. It's not great at freeway riding, but actually, it's probably saved me a lot of money in speeding tickets for that reason. I LOVE my DRZ.
The DRZ400S I have isn '03, and I had it lowered, and changed the seat. There are many options but what I did was I took it to Aftershocks, and Phil did magical things that lowered the seat about 2 3/4", also making my suspension feel AWESOME. I also bought the gel seat from Suzuki, which is more comfortable and 1" lower.

Farther back, the white dirtbike is the DR350, it was was a '93, kickstart only. It was stock at a very manageable low-ish seat height. No problems with the height on that one at all. It is also a great bike, but the particular machine I bought had major starting issues. I got rid of it for that reason only. Everyone else tells me they never had those problems with their DR350s. I really enjoyed riding that bike. It is lower than the 400 out of the factory, so you wouldn't have to do anything to it.

These dualsport machines are tall, but narrow, and generally light enough that you can balance them more easily.

BMW dualsports are a completely different class. they are generally much bigger, much heavier. They will probably perform better on the freeway, but worse in the dirt. Generally. I keep threatening to get a BMW, but feel dwarfed when I climb onto one.

Dualsport bikes are awesome for bombing around the city, since they eat up the potholes and toss into corners easily. They are less fun on the freeway than other bikes, generally. Unpaved roads, well, you can see my photos for that.

Money: A new DRZ is probably around $6000? I can't remember. And then you'll have to insure it and all that, so budget it in.
I think you can get a used DRZ on Craigslist for $3000 or so?
Still, it's a lot more than a massage, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

another option, if you're really short, is to get a bike that's been supermotard-ed. Smaller wheels mean the seat height comes down more. Actually, Suzuki is selling the DRZ this way now as well.

In closing, a proper dirtbike shouldn't even have a shiny side, so this is all off topic.

"These dualsport machines are tall, but narrow, and generally light enough that you can balance them more easily."

That is part of what i liked so much about the one i sat on the other day. It felt sooo much more manageable than the bmw monster bike. Though if that bmw was a little shorter and lighter it would have been wonderful for me i think.

"Money: A new DRZ is probably around $6000? I can't remember. And then you'll have to insure it and all that, so budget it in.

Yes, in the new price range that has been out of my price range. As far as bartering - it would of course be bartering for more then one massage session. But a running series of 1-2 hour sessions which normally cost $60 / 1 hr plus additional on-site fee of $20 - $50 to cover gas, bridge tolls, time, etc.

The person whose motocycles i was looking at last week, is actually interested in possibly bartering for just this with me. If he can find a suitable motorcycle that he can acquire through friends or contacts. Otherwise im still open to bartering with anyone else...

"another option, if you're really short, is to get a bike that's been supermotard-ed. Smaller wheels mean the seat height comes down more. Actually, Suzuki is selling the DRZ this way now as well."

Why the term "supermotard"? Ive heard that before somewhere. What does it refer to / mean specifically?
Does simply using smaller tires have any effects worth noting or considering on performance or safety?

              Thanks for the feedback,

                > bmw monster bike

The one I had, the '97 F650ST, is far from being a monster (pictures in my profile)
I paid in 2002 $3900 on ebay; when I totaled in 2004 (30000 miles later) the insurance gave me $5000 for it.
It is shorter than the Honda XR650 I have now and it felt lighter, probably because of the lower center of mass.
Also, it handled the highway MUCH better than the Honda. As I said, there is a lowering kit for it.

OK, a used DRZ would probably be in the $3000 range, a used DR350 way less, I think I bought mine around $1200 and sold it (just before it blew up, incidentally) for $800. It needed work by then. The less you pay up front, the more you'll pay in working on it, *generally*

If you can find someone willing to give you a motorcycle in exchange for massage, go for it. It's a chance that I'm pretty sure won't come around again soon.

Supermotard refers to dirtbikes that have been given smaller wheels (sportbikes sized, essentially) and usually other upgrades like big brakes. Supermotards are great for the street, not quite as good in the dirt, and they generally cost more than dualsports, because of the upgrade parts. The steering will feel a bit different. Awesome bikes. You can go see them racing at Stockton motoplex fairly often.
