hey, on the college radio station the other night they were reading kerouac to/ with some sound effects and jazz....was awesome....

and burroughs too..... something from railroad earth, or earth railroad....correct me please....but it was great....

so i was wondering what are ya'lls favorite kerouac passages.....

if there's one thing about kerouac i really dig, it's that he's read by all different types of people.....acadamia, street hustlers, and even people who "don't like books"

so what you think?

Poems of the Buddhas of Old

Poems of The Buddhas Of Old

By Jean-Louis(but really by Kerouac)

I

The boys were sittin
In a grove of trees
Listenin to Buddy
Explainin the keys.

"Boys, I say the keys
Cause there's lots a keys
But only one door,
One hive for the bees.

So listen to me
And I'll try to tell all
As I heard it long ago
In the Pure Land Hall.

Life is like a dream,
You only think it's real
Cause you're born a sucker
For that kind of deal;

But if the Truth was known
You ain't here nohow
And neither am I
Nor that cow and sow

You see across the field
One standing silently
The other rutting ragefully
In essence so quietly.

For you good boys
With winesoaked teeth
That can't understand
These words on a heath

I'll make it simpler
Like a bottle a wine
And a good woodfire
Under the stars divine.

Now listen to me
And when you have learned
The Dharma of the Buddhas
Of old and yearned

To sit down with the truth
Under a lonesome tree
In Yuma Arizony
Or anywhere you might be

Don't thank me for telling
What was told me,
This is the Wheel I'm turning,
This is the reason I be.

Mind is the maker
For no reason at all
Of all this creation
Created to fall.

II

"Who played this cruel joke
On bloke after bloke
Packing like a rat
Across the desert flat?"

Asked Montana Slim
Gesturing to him
The buddy of the men
In this lion's den.

"Was it God got mad
Like the Indian cad
Who was only a giver
Crooked like the river?

Gave you a garden,
Let the fruit harden,
Then comes the flood
And the loss of your blood?

Pray tell us, good buddy
And don't make it muddy
Who played this trick
On Harry and Dick

And why is so mean
The Eternal scene,
Just what's the point
Of this whole joint?"

III

Replied the good buddy:
"So now the bird's asleep
And that air plane gone
Let's all listen deep.

Everybody silent
Includin me
To catch the roar
Of eternity

That's ringin in our ears
Never-endingly.
You hear it Tom, Dick
And Harry Lee?

You hear it Slim
From Old Montan'?
You hear it Big Daddy
And Raggedy Dan?

You know what I mean
When I say eternity?
You heard it in your crib-
Shhh-Infinity."

IV

Up spoke Big Daddy
From Baltimore
An enormous Negro
Forevermore:

"You mean that shushin
And that fussin
A-slushin in my ears
For all these years?

When I was so high
Jess a little guy
I thought it was me
In the whisperin sea.

I asked my Mam
About that jam,
She didn't say nothin,
She sewed the button.

It was quiet and late
At the afternoon grate.
Her face showed no sign
Of that whisperin line

But as we sat within
Instead of abatin
The noise got to roar
Like an openin door

That opened my haid
Like if it was daid
And the only thing alive
Was that boomin jive

And we looked at each othe
Child and mother
Like wakin from a dream
In a spirit stream."

V

"Well spoke, Big Daddy!"
Cried the buddy real glad
"This proves that you never know
And you'll never be sad.

For all that was the sound
That we all hear now
And I want you to know
It's no sound nohow

But the absense of sound
Clear and pure,
The silence now heard
In heaven for sure.

What's heaven?
By Nirvana mean I?
This selfsame no-sound
Silence sigh

Eternal and empty
Of sounds and things
And all thievin rivers
Complainin brings.

For if we can sit here
In this riverbottom sand
And come to see
And understand

That we got in us
Ability to hear
Holy Emptiness
Beyond the ear

And block our ears
And hear inside
And know t'aint here
Nor here, the tide,

But everywhere, inside,
Outside, all throughout
Mind's dream, Slim?
What you gripin about?

Imaginary rivers
And gardens too,
A movie in the mind
Of me and you.

The point
Of this whole joint
Is stop, sit,
And thee anoint

With teachings such
As these, and more,
To find the key
Out this dark corridor.

The effulgent door,
The mysterious knob,
The bright room gained
Is the only job."

The boys was pleased
And rested up for more
And Jack cooked mush
In honor of the Door.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060726/ap_en_ot/books_on_the_road

Uncensored 'On the Road' to be published Wed Jul 26, 3:12 PM ET

Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" will be published in its unedited original scroll version by Viking Press, which published the Beat Generation classic in September 1957.

John Sampas, executor of the writer's literary estate and brother of Stella Sampas, Kerouac's third wife, said he has signed a contract with Viking, an imprint of Penguin Group USA. He hopes the work will be out by the end of next year, the 50th anniversary of the publication.

"Incidents in the original were edited out of the published version because of the censorship of the time," said Sampas, who noted that some of the edited sections refer to drugs and sex. "On the scroll, entire paragraphs are crossed out and not included in the published version."

Sampras said the new version will be in book form, but taken from the original scroll. Any sections Kerouac had crossed out before turning it into the publisher will be excluded in the new edition.

In 1951, Kerouac, hopped up on coffee and Benzedrine, sat at a typewriter and began retelling the tale of an aimless trek he made across America. In a spontaneous, stream-of-consciousness burst, he typed on long sheets of tracing paper, taping each finished page to the previous one to form one continuous, rolling text.

Published six years later, "On the Road" won critical praise and became an icon of the post-World War II subculture of intellectuals, writers, musicians and rebels who identified with the freedom of Kerouac's cross-country odyssey and embraced his disdain for 1950s conformity.

The original, 120-foot, coffee-stained scroll that is yellowing with age was purchased in 2001 by James Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, for $2.43 million. The scroll is touring U.S. museums and libraries.

am reading "Desolute Angel" by Dennis McNally, who holds a doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts and also wrote "A Long, Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead," which i just finished and was great. the kerouac biography was read by jerry garcia in the 1970's and he loved it, and offered mcnally a job with the dead, which he took.

i forgot alot about kerouac and friends and am enjoying it. recommend you pick it up.

Some of the Dharma

I've recently begun a project of reading through various Kerouac outside of the poems and novels--namely the Book of Sketches, Some of the Dharma, and his journals poorly published as "Windblown World."

On the one hand the extra-opus writing is interesting--the Book of Sketches outshines his journals and shares something in common with "Some of the Dharma". These writings provide some insight into his intentions and mindset. For example, "some of the dharma" reveals his idea behind his legend some of which are already known such as his design for "Blues" and "Tics" (found in his explanations in The Book of Sketches (tics) and in the introduction to Book of Blues and Mexico City Blues) but for those who haven't seen "Some of the Dharma" Here's a selection:

TIC: A Tic is a vision suddenly of memory. The ideal, formal Tic, as for a BOOK OF TICS is one short and one longer sentence, generally about 50 words in all, the intro sentence and the explaining sentence, i.e., the above Tic about "Cold Fall mornings"---
SKETCH: A Sketch is a prose description of a scene before the eyes. Ideally, for a BOOK OF SKETCHES,
one small page (of notebook size) about 100 words, so as not to ramble too much, and give an arbitrary form.
DREAM---A Dream, the core and kernel written on awakening from a dream, may fan out further, usually ends up in 300 words, viz. the BOOK OF DREAMS
POP: American (non-Japanese) Haikus, short 3-line poems or "pomes" rhyming or non-rhyming delineating "little Samadhis" if possible, usually of a Buddhist connotation, aimed towards enlightenment. BOOK OF POPS.
BLUES: A Blues is a complete poem written filling in one notebook page, of small or medium size, usually in 15-to-25 lines, known as a Chorus, i.e., 223rd Chorus of Mexico City Blues in the BOOK OF BLUES
ECSTASY: Meaning "Samadhi," a prose and verse accounting of a Samadhi or Samapatti experience in Dhyana meditation, of any length. BOOK OF ECSTASIES
MOVIE---Formerly Bookmovies, or Mindmovies, prose concentration camera-eye visions of a definite movie of the mind with fade-ins, pans, close-ups, and fade-outs. BOOK OF MOVIES
VISION---Like Visions of Neal, Visions of Gerard, etc., full-length prose works concentrating on character of one individual, with no other form than that, including verse and any thing, even pictures. BOOK OF VISIONS
FLASH---"Dreamflashes," short sleepdreams or drowse daydreams of an enlightened nature describable in a few words, BOOK OF FLASHES. Example: "Bringing gray suitcases down from the attic of heaven I say 'Me I'm not comin down any more!"'
DAYDREAM---Prose description of daydreams, wish-dreams during waking hours.

So in his mind, the rambling made sense and fell into different categories. Too bad he didn't publish this as a separate article in line with "Essentials of Spontaneous Prose" or "Belief and Technique for Modern Prose."

The Book of Sketches read like how I imagine his journals might have read and Some of the Dharma reads like how I figure his journals actually sounded--and for his journals, hmm. Too edited. One day I hope more of his journals are published.

Jack Kerouac Alley - San Francisco, CA

I bid and am running a construction job on Jack Kerouac Alley in San Francisco, next to City Lights bookstore. The idea is to create an alleyway [closed to traffic] that has cobblestones, new streetlamps, and large colored concrete pavers with brass lettering that has poetry on them; in English and Chinese. The cool thing is I was a fan of Lawrence Ferlinghetti since I was a teenager, and now I get to remodel a street with poetry next to his bookstore. What fate is this?!
Before I started this job I did not know too much about Jack Kerouac but since then I've done a quick study; a fascinating character...
Nice to meet ya all...

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Johnson's 1987 NBCC Award- winning memoir of the 1950s and her relationship with Kerouac and other beats features a new introduction by the author.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Book Description
Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, Johnson's Beat memoir is "the safe-deposit box that contains the last, precious scrolls of the New York '50s" (The Washington Post).

Jack Kerouac. Allen Ginsberg. William S. Burroughs. LeRoi Jones. Theirs are the names primarily associated with the Beat Generation. But what about Joyce Johnson (nee Glassman), Edie Parker, Elise Cowen, Diane Di Prima, and dozens of others? These female friends and lovers of the famous iconoclasts are now beginning to be recognized for their own roles in forging the Beat movement and for their daring attempts to live as freely as did the men in their circle a decade before Women's Liberation.

Twenty-one-year-old Joyce Johnson, an aspiring novelist and a secretary at a New York literary agency, fell in love with Jack Kerouac on a blind date arranged by Allen Ginsberg nine months before the publication of On the Road made Kerouac an instant celebrity. While Kerouac traveled to Tangiers, San Francisco, and Mexico City, Johnson roamed the streets of the East Village, where she found herself in the midst of the cultural revolution the Beats had created. Minor Characters portrays the turbulent years of her relationship with Kerouac with extraordinary wit and love and a cool, critical eye, introducing the reader to a lesser known but purely original American voice: her own.

"Rich and beautifully written, full of vivid portraits and evocations." --San Francisco Chronicle

"--A first-rate memoir, very beautiful, very sad." --E. L. Doctorow

"Realistic rather than flamboyant, [Johnson] succeeds in portraying the Beats not as oddities or celebrities but as individuals." --The New Yorker

Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics) (July 1, 1999)

The Subterraneans and Big Sur

Two nights ago I finished The Subterraneans at about 2:00 am in the morning and could not sleep. Intense! Honest.? I'm not sure I've ever read such an honest account of all the crazy sick bs that goes on in relationships. As a writer I'm stunned by his capacity to reveal himself so openly. The details, the details, the holy details...I don't think I have that kind of courage. But I do know that feeling, when you really get something down, something true and see yourself etched there in ink and paper.

Tonight I just finished Big Sur. It's 2:44 am and I'm a little afraid to go to sleep, afraid I'll have nightmares about the human race being swept by the wind into the ocean of death, or of a little boy screaming "No, no, no" at the side of a hole dug by his mother in just the shape of a grave that would fit him. I am in a state of horrified awe at his ability to write, at the intensity, drive, and passion he is able to convey.

I am self publishing a chap book of poems and need a critque in order to get it in shape. Here is a sample and tks for your time.

bar talk

to Cathy Merris-McNealy

sun setting in the breeze
kids need supper
wife in bed with cramps
taxes due by midnight.
the phone rang
the wife took it.
it was mom.
i could hear the Jackals laughing again
and my bones knew it was my sister.

the one who looked like an Indian princess in Manhattan
before she returned to small town Illinois.
the one whose back broke
from stocking bars and working kitchens
in two different states for 20 years.
whose doc finally said nothing could be done,
just disability and dope.
whose tongue two weeks before
was so dope thick that
when she called me honey
i cried.
that one
had O.D.
and now was in withdrawal.

in the town of her birth
in the town of her mother's birth.
the town of her grandmother’s birth and death
in the town where her grand father
drank in sweating silent red brick streets and
danced other women in full moon snow still nights
while the Jackals of the Whorehouse of Death
circled laughing.
and now his granddaughter,
my sister ,
is looking in their eyes
to see if she wants their laughter
or her life.

I am working on an audio documentary related to Kerouac's On the Road. Finding My Kerouac is about road trips, their meaning and significance, and how a mid-life road trip can help reinvent a life. The site and blog I've created asks for bloggers to share road trip stories. Please, everyone, check it out and pass the word. I hope to get some traffic at the blog - blog.findingmykerouac.com or www.findingmykerouac.com.

"(The Museum owner) is a collector: books, manuscripts, magazines, records, posters, pictures, memorabilia. He opened a Beat museum on Franklin Street in Monterey a couple of years ago, but the Monterey Peninsula was not exactly ground zero for the Beat generation. So this month, he moved four truckloads of stuff to upper Grant, which is the scene of the scene."

it was nice to have this little shop in monterey while i lived there. i'd recommend hitting the new sf digs and saying hey to jerry if you're in the neighborhood.

"On the Road" in San Francisco

I went to see the "On the Road" scroll at the San Francisco Library this evening.

I just love the opening sentance,

"I first met met Neal..."

I think the reason this sentance caputures my interest so much is the fact that there are so few typo's, gramatical or spelling or otherwise in the manuscript. Just one long, never ending, unparagraphed scroll of continous words. Sure I had read that Kerouac wrote "On the Road" on one long scroll and didn't want to edit it, but I never conceptualized it for the amazing feat that it was until I acctually saw it. I was so amazed that he never seemed to change his mind in the middle of a thread. Never had to cut and paste a paragraph from here to there in order have better flow of thought. His stream of consciousness was so succint and driving that he didn't digress from his orginal thought. Almost like he was taking dictation and therefore never needed to edit. It was like the "met met" was the back fireing of an engine before warming up, like a literary clearing of his throat before a soliloquy. Its the imperfection of the perfection that facinates me.

I know, I know, first thought best thought. Whatever!~....Whatever would I do without backspace and delete. And there before me is this literary work of art that I am drawn to time and time again for prose and poetry and liberal inspiration looking flawlessly back at me. It almosted mocked me as I am forever obsessively editing all. Perhaps it will set me free, although I doubt it since I've already edited this line.

Most of the rest of the exhibit was filler in my opinion and we saw a talk by Bill Morgan that was pretty much "History of the Beats 101", but all in all I'm pretty glad I went to see a piece of art I so admire.

"On the Road" is in town until Sunday. Doesn't take much time to see and is free. Check it out if you get a chance.

Just saw this straight-to-video indy movie, based on a letter Neal Cassady wrote to Kerouac. Its one of those things that's good and not good at the same time. The actor who plays Cassady is amazing--full of gorgeous, manic charm and not entirely balanced. The rest of the cast (Keanu Reeves!) was also pretty darn good. The directing and camera work, on the other hand, were entirely annoying and intrusive in that whee! look at me! I'm an indy director! I have a camera, whiz, whiz, whee!! I am making an alternative statement, look at me!!! kind of way.

i just moved from big sur to portland oregon after only a few months. kerouac's sur is much more dead on than miller's optimistic view of this once errupting community of artisans. sad to say it, but hey even buddha had to die.
by the way, if you want to help me wake the dead of big sur this summer at the big sur beat revival. email me.

Kerouac Quote--where to find it

Anyone out there happen to know exactly where, in Visions of Cody, this quote comes from?:

"Come on Boy, Go thou across the ground, Go moan for man"
"Go thou and be little beneath my sight
Go thou and be my newest seed in the pod
Go thou, Go thou, thy hence
And of this world report you well and truly"

I like this quote a lot, but I can't find it , anywhere, in Visions of Cody, and I know that it comes from somewhere in there. Thanks.

Yes

So its really worth seeing the On the Road scroll at the san francisco main library! there's a very cool exhibit along with it.

Today in the chronicle there is an inspiring article and pix about the people who came to the openning of the exhibit.

(One thing I didn't know -- jk used peoples real names in the manuscript that he wrote, and they were changed before publication)

article link:
http://tinyurl.com/9tmgv

also tomorrow at noon (thursday) there is a free movie at the sf main
The Coney Island of Lawrence Ferlinghetti
(1996, 60 min.) - Poet and publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti expounds on the roles of poets and authors of dissident literature in American culture. The film includes conversations and commentary with Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Ed Sanders, Amiri Baraka and others.

Hello,
I'm not meaning to spam my tribe but I created a tribe all about anything William S. Burroughs related.
http://tribes.tribe.net/burroughsinterzone

I figured that it would be ok to post this here since Kerouac was a friend of Burroughs.

Rhino put out a 3 disc Kerouac box set a few years back, this is what got me into him.

It is one disc of him reading poetry/prose solo, one with steve allen on piano and one with zoot sims(?) on sax.

It really did me good and if you don't know anything about Jack, this may be a good way to appreciate his work.. It is very raw and inspiring.

Took the coast up to San Francisco this Thanksgiving. Stopped in Big Sur for a moment and took some photos.

In San Fran -- of course made a trip to the City Lights Book Store and got lost for a few hours within the stacks.

What a great bookstore...first time I have been there. I bought the pocket Poet series "The Scripture of the Golden Eternity". After Jenny reminded me about it. I figured I better finally buy it! One of my favorite lines is below :

Kerouac on Burroughs

Kerouac's portrayal of Burroughs has always seemed the most honest to me. As much as I respect Burroughs as a literary icon, he was a twisted man and Kerouac, more than anyone else, captured that essence in nearly every book he included him in.

Newsman Lucien Carr Dies at 79

By Martin Weil
W
ashington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, January 29, 2005; Page B05

Lucien Carr, 79, who was a friend of the Beat Generation writers since their college days and who spent decades as a mainstay of one of the major news wire services, died Jan. 28 at George Washington University Hospital.

Mr. Carr, who lived in Washington and was retired after 47 years at United Press International, had cancer, according to his longtime companion, Kathleen Silvassy.

Accounts of the founding of the Beat Generation often credit Mr. Carr with bringing together such celebrated figures of the movement as Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac.

Kerouac and Ginsberg, like Mr. Carr, were students at Columbia University in the 1940s, and Mr. Carr knew Burroughs from their prep school days in St. Louis.

Kerouac is said to have typed the manuscript of his landmark novel "On the Road" on a scroll of teletype paper provided by Mr. Carr.

"He and Jack were extremely close," said Jon Frandsen, a former top editor at UPI.

The Beats, who seemed to exist on the edge of propriety in their search for experience, won renown for their willingness to defy convention in pursuit of literary truth.

Mr. Carr's days as the colleague of these freewheeling figures might seem at odds with his image later in life at UPI as, in Silvassy's words, "a newsman's newsman."

But if the goal of the Beats was discovering or portraying truth through fiction or poetry, Mr. Carr's long career in news was, as his son Simon described it in an interview, also devoted to truth.

His work at UPI, where he became assistant managing editor for national news, "had a very abstract but conceivably attainable goal of telling the truth," Simon Carr said.

As an editor and manager in an organization providing news to millions, Mr. Carr, in the words of his son, was "very no-nonsense." He enjoyed the often colorful and idiosyncratic people who worked for him, but he insisted that they abandon what he saw as fluff and foolishness and "get to the essence of the story."

Said Frandsen: "He really believed that journalists were about the business of finding out the truth as best as they could."

Mr. Carr was born in New York and raised in St. Louis. Before entering Columbia, he was educated at private schools that included Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass.

He is said to appear under fictitious names in works by Kerouac and some of the others.

In 1944, according to published accounts, Mr. Carr, in his late teens, fatally stabbed a man who reportedly was making an unwanted advance. He was imprisoned for two years but, according to his son Simon, eventually received a pardon.

Silvassy said Mr. Carr started at what was then United Press as a copyboy in 1946 or 1947, rose through the ranks and transferred to Washington in 1983. She said he was particularly excited and enthralled by the moon landings and "was up day and night" supervising coverage. He retired in 1993.

According to his son, he was married three times. His other children are Ethan Carr of Amherst, Mass., and Caleb Carr of Cherry Plain, N.Y.

Mr. Carr's last years were "devoted to his family," including his five grandchildren by whom he was "much loved," his son said.

I'm new here... Hi. Everyone. Anyway, I thought I'd contribute by posting some food for thought...

I just picked up a book called Door Wide Open, A Beat Love Affair in Letters, 1957 - 1958. It is a series of letters written back and forth between Jack K. and Joyce Johnson.

Just wondering if any of you have read this book... I find it interesting because it includes letters not included in Jack's books of 'Selected Letters' but I also find the book kind of sappy... A memoir from a girl that could never quite capture the man she loved... *sigh* ( I should just shut up with the making fun, because I can't say I've never experienced the unrequited love thing... )

So, anybody know who Joyce Johnson is? She seems to have been involved in the whole beat scene, but I've never heard of her until now.

I just got "Windblown World" (The Journals of Jack Kerouac 1947-1954). If you do not know about this get this. I read some years ago they were going to release some of his journals. This is the start of the writing that would become "On The Road" and some more.

sound of silence

"Then I suddenly had the most tremendous feeling of the pitifulness of human beings, whatever they were, their faces, pained mouths, personalities, attempts to be gay, little petulances, feelings of loss, their dull and empty witticisms so soon forgotten: Ah, for what? I knew that the sound of silence was everywhere and therefore everything everywhere was silence."
--Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums

As I read this passage a couple days ago, it suddenly struck me-- could these lines be the inspiration for the Simon and Garfunkel song?

Anybody got the answer / care to speculate?

since there's been such debate/scrutiny and heightened interest/venom on the subject:

i will have to concede that there were some days when kerouac (pre-excessive booze/smoke/rightwing ravaged face) might have rivaled me as the world's finest looking author since byron.

who are we kidding? my magnamity never ceases to amaze.

I just discovered this tribe. I graduated from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa Unversity in May 2003. Anne Waldman and Allen Ginsberg founded the writing program/the Jack Kerouc School in the early 70s. It was an amazing experience. I took classes with Anne and Steve Taylor, who played guitar with Ginsberg for over 20 years and current member of the Fugs, was one of my main teachers. Are there any Naropa people on this tribe or is any one familar with the school?

When I read Desolation Angels and Jack was describing his time on Desolation Peak, those rare moments he spent there left a lasting impression on me. I longed to identify with and share in that experience and was grateful that he wrote about it.

What are some Kerouac literary moments that left a lasting impression on you and why (if you want to elaborate that far?)

Anyone know what ever happened to the supposed Coppola production of "On the Road"?

Anyone had the opportunity to check out this book. Keroauc did a great open to the book and the pictures speak on the same level as his books.

Did anyone give a listen to the tribute CD put out on Keroauc a few years back? I think it was simply called Kicks Joy Darkness. Anyway, there is a track on there read by Johhny Depp which I think is an amazing read.

Kerouac Changed my Perspective

Before I read Kerouac about 5-6 years ago, I didn't see life the same way I do now. It was like I had been just living, not experiencing my moments. As a writer, I became aware how stale my own work seemed in comparison to Kerouac's fresh perspective.

How did Kerouac influence your drive and vision?

Have you read "Women of the Beat Generation," ed. by Brenda Knight? It's a great introduction to many influential and tragically overlooked writers of the generation...if you haven't, you're missing out :)

Favorite Bio's on Jack

Anne Charter's "Kerouac" is a really good one for she got to hang with him in Lowell, Mass. I believe when he and his Mother moved back home. I am pretty sure. And Jack showed her his archives. It is the first on him and pretty real. But over the years there are some good ones that have come out the woodworks. I like Gerald Nicosia's "Memory Babe-A Critical Biography Of Jack Kerouac" which is like is like 698 pages. If you have not read it you should. Another more recent one is Ellis Amburn's "Subterranean Kerouac" which is a real good read. Which also throws out that he was Gay and slept around a lot when drunk. Which is a trip. I think "Memory Babe" mentioned that also too? Those are my recommendations.:)
