Things I Didn’t Like About Rakkasah 2008

topic posted Sat, March 22, 2008 - 3:50 AM by  Lisa
These are some of my thoughts about Rakkasah 2008, presented in no particular order.

•The seating. Not enough, and the chairs in front of the speakers were useless and uncomfortable. I saw some people wearing. A center aisle is needed in the food building. Was tough to get in and out of the middle.

•The placement of the speakers. Awkward for the audience to sit in front of them

•The class I took had to contend with maintenance person changing lights during the instruction. Our instruction was accompanied by the beep-beep of the reach equipment moving around to complete the task. Should have been done another time. Really took away from the class, which already wasn’t that great.

•Stage lighting in the food building was too orangey and yellow.

•Pretty unimpressed by Suhalia’s performance on Sunday. Too long and kinda blah.

•The Gem Show people were annoying.

•There seemed to be less vendors and some of the ones that were there had fewer products.

•Cranky vendors. Several of the vendors I had dealings with were cranky. Not sure what that was about, but it makes it hard to patronize someone’s business that doesn’t seem to have the time or perceived desire to assist with purchases.

•Naming of the stages. Just call them by the building names. I missed a couple of performances I really wanted to see because I got the stages mixed up.

•The distance between stages. I felt like two separate events going on because of the distance between the buildings. I ended up not spending as much time in the other building because of the hassle of going back and forth. While the weather was great this year, what about subsequent years if there is inclement weather? That dash between stages will be uncomfortable and awkward.

•Paying for parking. Not only do I have to for over $12 to get in, but an additional $5 a day for parking for $17 a day entry fee. Even with an advance ticket, the extra $15 for the three days has just cut out an entire vendor or food purchase. I understand that the event doesn’t get this money that it goes to the fairgrounds, but that still doesn’t mitigate my budget.

•The shoe police guy at the after party chasing people down who weren’t wearing shoes around the lobby area. Heeelllloooo….we are belly dancers here…..part of the outfit dude. I understand it is a safety and health issue, but sheesh.

•Vendor parking and pack up was a nightmare. Definitely need some reorganization here.

•No seating for food court. If it hadn’t been nice outside, it would have been much worse.

    Hey,

As with any new venue there are apt to be some things that can be improved upon, and believe me we were making a list through out the weekend!

*Seating was underestimated we could use more in both buildings.

*Speakers, I thought were just fine in the East Building but West for sure needed some fixing.

*The lighting will be different for next year, we are thinking of using different colored gels n' some other less harsh lighting.

*Please e-mail me at rakkasah@att.net - I would lie to get you feed back on the classes you took.....

*All performances are subject to your opinion. Everyone has one.. Though officially it did run over and we'll try to keep that form happening again.

*Gem show people - no control there

*Lots o' vendors perhaps the bigger space made it look smaller? Many of the vendor took booths in both building. Look for a change on that next year.

*Happy pills - point them out and well give them happy pills. Honestly that does suck but again I have no control over people moods. Next year stop by (although I think ya did..) the Alankara booth, we are always having a good time!

*Stage name perhaps you may have something there..

*Well..... I really do not think they will let us move the buildings! It is incredibly difficult to find a venue to house such a large event and keep the prices reasonable. We had over one hundred umbrellas on stand by that were going to lend while walking between buildings. That's something......

*Were oh were can we be price and what not...For example there was place in SF that was large enough but the cost of the building was so high we would have to charge $35 per person to get in - that is unlikely - and parking was $30 day day.

*Shoe police hahha I actually was not accosted by the shoe police. I'll talk to the hotel and tell them to lay off for next year. We had the same issue in NJ a couple of years ago - once they got straightened out (I called the manager) we had no more problems.

*Vendor parking - I think this was a first year issue. Once We had some 'conversations' with the fair ground staff it seemed to get better.

    *Seating see the first one.

    Cheers,
    Michelle

Thanks for the response Michelle. For future reference there is a supplement called "Happy Camper".

I ditto the stage name thing. I was confused most of the time. Just said I was in the food building.

Good idea on the umbrellas. Do I see some sort of routine being developed here?

Venues are very hard to come by and paying for parking does suck, but what are you to do? Kudos on the Raks staff for finding a really good venue. I was glad I only had to drive a mile from my friends house.

As a fellow sponsor, I know how hard it is to find a new venue and how hard it is to please everyone. My main concern was the lack of lighting at night between the buildings. I know of at least one injury in the dark, so I'm hoping some lighting can be set up between the buildings next year.

I'm also hoping that the music issues can be resolved by next year in the Exhibition building, lots of screaming mikes and complaints about the acoustics. I also heard from dancers that they couldn't hear their music on that stage.

I think some vendors were cranky especially on Friday because it was all new and different which causes stress. The good news is they were let in early which really helped the stress of setting up in a new place and location in the room.

Overall, for the first time at a new venue, I think things went very well and you deserve kudos.
      See you next year,
      Mezdulene

I agree on the building names..Exhibition and McCormick.. keep it simple and the names are on the building.

As in any stage show.. sound and lighting always don;t please everyone... Red and Yellow gels was out the red lips us dancers always have and in film looks like there are no lips...

Speakers.. this way the audiance hears the music - like at a concert.

I loved the hotel closeness and the after parties - and I found the staff nice and wanting to please.. never had a problem with the shoe police =-).. and i rarely have shoes on.. I guess sometimes and some days for some people.. you have problems.

I do however miss the aumbiance of the theatre.. but to give that up for bathrooms that worked the whole weekend = priceless

Hope ya'all saw my other posting about the things I DID LIKE!! No offense meant, it is the Libra in me coming out. Got to balance it all out, you know. I know that some of the things are out of control, like building placement and performer choreography. A new **anything** (venue, baby, boyfriend, husband, friend, job) all require a period of adjustment. Sometimes having feedback about what you did right and could use improvement on can only serve to make whatever you are doing better. Really looking forward to attending next year.

well, i was expecting the parking to be a lot more, especialy for a fairground location! i hope it stays that way. i think, id rather pay $5 to park and not have to worry if my car will be there when i get out or if ill get mugged!

i agree there needs to be seating near the food area.

i also agree the building names are better then east or west

Sound on the West stage was pitiful -- I guess I'm spoiled. ;-) Could hardly hear my music when I was dancing Friday night. Luckily I knew it by heart, so I just played it in my head.

West stage was not the best all weekend... On my vid you can tell there is a stero issue.. not all of the music from the original was picked up. It took me a while to figure it out.. then Like you Latifa.. I realized I knew it so well that I hadn't heard it until after 10 or so views of the DVD.

Oh, and for next year, could we have some food for vegetarians? Even a cheese sandwich would be good....

        My complaints about this year:

        1. Vegetarian food, please!
        2. LIGHTS between the two buildings, even free standing lights--I had first a cane, then a cyst broke in my foot which took out a TON of pressure so I didn't need it, but dude! It was dark!
        3. Vendor parking was a nightmare indeed, but again, first year, things get worked out.

So, all in all, I think it went pretty darned smoothly! Or..so it appeared!

    Hi,
I'm sorry you encountered some "cranky" vendors ! I hope I wasn't one of them, but I could have been :-O
Standing on a hard cement floor for about 30 hours sometimes takes the smile off your face...
I actually found the parking , loading in, and packing up to be much easier than at Richmond, where for the
last couple of years we had to dolly our boxes across the street, fighting traffic, and carry boxes up the stairs.
The location in Vallejo is much nicer, and the drive is certainly much more pleasant from where I live.
    (in Santa Rosa)
I don't care for the two building venue, but I suppose I'll get used to it.
It was a little too far to walk for me, (as a vendor, I can't be away from my booth for too long) ,when I
wanted to see certain dancers perform, or visit some friends who were vending in the "other" building.
I thought that certain vendors should not have been placed so close to other vendors selling the same product.
There were two booths with virtually identical Afghani jewelry directly opposite each other ,and
two booths both selling similar DVD's and CD's directly opposite each other, just in my immediate area.
(This might account for some less than happy vendors).
I also wish that there were some sort of food booth in the first building, also, to equalize the two venues.
And, I really wished there were a few more innovative, and Tribal , troupes on the bill.
I suppose, with the call-in, it's the "luck of the draw", but it did seem as though there were a) mostly cabaret style dancers,
and b) less "headliners" than in the past.
(Which could have been an optical illusion, because of the two building venue, and my not getting to see half of the show ?)
Lastly, since Suhaila always gets such a big audience, I wished she'd done one performance in each of the two buildings.
Just my two cents, Susie (Coin Belts by Susie)

The dancers in my troupe had a very hard time with how slippery the East stage floor was. Several of us lost our footing and we also saw other dancers nearly fall. Is there anyway to make the stage less slippery next year? Rosin perhaps?
    Thanks!

I didn't like that it was over 3000 miles away and in California. Rakkasah West should be in Somerset NJ and Rakkasah East should be on Long Island. Right?!! :D

Okay, okay, so maybe that's a bit too selfish.................... Rakkasah East should be in Brooklyn............yeah, that's good... :D

Well, It is what it is and it looks like it's going to be our new home. I almost cried though, when I found where my booth was located, but with the help of my booth partner, really was able to turn it around and be positive about the whole thing! Even brought 80's prom dresses to wear and I did manage to talk Siwa into wearing one with me as she helped out in the booth! You know the old saying "If life gives you lemons, wear sequins and you'll feel better!" Aruba
