The Rak West Friday and Saturday night afterparties were amazing!

I'm sure we had over 100 dancers on Saturday night! Thanks to all the dancers!

I want to thank the Superband (Rakkasah All Star Band?) which was:

Pat - Oud/Vocals
Denise - Keyboard
Carmine (that's me!) - Cumbus and musician wrangling :)
Brad - Doumbek and Theramin (that space ship sounding thing)
Pete - Beat Box and Djembe
Melissa The Loud - Hurdy Gurdy (that wooden box thing that everyone is wondering what it is)
J.D. - Accordian

There was another doumbek and riq guy whose name I forget and a WHOLE BUNCH of GREAT doumbek players from my classes! They all played for 2 to 3 hours a night!!!

These are some of my thoughts about Rakkasah 2008, presented in no particular order.

•The seating. Not enough, and the chairs in front of the speakers were useless and uncomfortable. I saw some people wearing. A center aisle is needed in the food building. Was tough to get in and out of the middle.

•The placement of the speakers. Awkward for the audience to sit in front of them

•The class I took had to contend with maintenance person changing lights during the instruction. Our instruction was accompanied by the beep-beep of the reach equipment moving around to complete the task. Should have been done another time. Really took away from the class, which already wasn’t that great.

•Stage lighting in the food building was too orangey and yellow.

•Pretty unimpressed by Suhalia’s performance on Sunday. Too long and kinda blah.

•The Gem Show people were annoying.

•There seemed to be less vendors and some of the ones that were there had fewer products.

•Cranky vendors. Several of the vendors I had dealings with were cranky. Not sure what that was about, but it makes it hard to patronize someone’s business that doesn’t seem to have the time or perceived desire to assist with purchases.

•Naming of the stages. Just call them by the building names. I missed a couple of performances I really wanted to see because I got the stages mixed up.

•The distance between stages. I felt like two separate events going on because of the distance between the buildings. I ended up not spending as much time in the other building because of the hassle of going back and forth. While the weather was great this year, what about subsequent years if there is inclement weather? That dash between stages will be uncomfortable and awkward.

•Paying for parking. Not only do I have to for over $12 to get in, but an additional $5 a day for parking for $17 a day entry fee. Even with an advance ticket, the extra $15 for the three days has just cut out an entire vendor or food purchase. I understand that the event doesn’t get this money that it goes to the fairgrounds, but that still doesn’t mitigate my budget.

•The shoe police guy at the after party chasing people down who weren’t wearing shoes around the lobby area. Heeelllloooo….we are belly dancers here…..part of the outfit dude. I understand it is a safety and health issue, but sheesh.

•Vendor parking and pack up was a nightmare. Definitely need some reorganization here.

•No seating for food court. If it hadn’t been nice outside, it would have been much worse.

•The location with regards to getting there. From Northern Nevada it was I-80 all the way, and then less than a ¼ mile jaunt to the hotel drive way.

•The hotel was very nice. My room was comfortable and clean and quiet. The staff was very nice and accommodating.

•Nearby convenience store for my Pepsi fix and other dining options.

•Walking distance to the event. For the most part it really was, except late at night it felt unsafe. I think that was mostly because I was in an unfamiliar area.

•Safety. Heads and shoulders above Richmond. I didn’t feel like I was going to get mugged or worse every time I stepped out of the building.

•The stages. I really liked having the side and front views of the stages. Nice to have a different perspective, instead of just straight on.

•My Rakkasah shirt, which I have already blinged up. Photos to follow.

•Taking my friend to her first Rakkasah and hearing her comments during and afterward. Always fun to see it through the eyes of a newbie.

•The afternoon sun coming in through the windows of whichever stage it was and bathing the performers in sunlight. The dancers and costumes in natural light were really beautiful.

•The Knights of Santiago. Helpful and professional as always.

•Weather for the drive home. I know no one has control over it, but it was pleasant not to have to fight a blizzard on Donner.

•The after party at the hotel was great. The band was high energy the crowd was well mannered. The military guys were a hoot. I really liked being able to hang with everyone and then know that they and I would be able to safely make it back our rooms.

•The secured location of the fairgrounds made it comfortable and nice to be able to take a breather outside and feel safe.

•Bathroom facilities a little scant, but hey, they worked and were well stocked for the most part.

•The dressing area for the dancers was nice. Great to not have to try and dodge the people in the bathroom.

For this year's show on the West Stage, I recorded 29732 photos, about 160 GB worth. Everyone who danced there has many high-resolution photos available to them.

So far, I've been able ship out 22 sets of disks for requesters, and have received notification variously that these were received. Currently my unfulfilled queue is down to 10-12 most-recent requesters to image disks for. I have a photo shoot in New England this weekend, so I will return to disk imaging and shipping again early next week to get these out as well, plus take on additional requests. In the interim, you may start to see photos that were sent already appear here on Tribe, and elsewhere, and clearly more will emerge. I will also be shipping a complete collection of all of the photos to Rakkasah on a disk drive very soon. Subsequently, at a later date, a subset of these will start to appear on the official Rakkasah website, for the West Stage.

If you have not contacted me yet for your photos, please PM me with your dance slot information and your ship-to address, so I can create your disk for you. I'm reachable on Tribe, or via email: mab@cruzio.com

Wish you well.

Blessings and Light,
Michael

Just wanted to let you know I started a new tribe called, "North Jersey Drummers" http://tribes.tribe.net. I will organize a weekly drum circle in the Bergen County area. Over the spring and summer I will post a park name and location every week. Over the winter I will try to get space like a church hall or something like that. The events will be free, and you do not need a drum I will bring some extra drums.

I will be photographing you on the West Stage. I would like to send a general call out to you to obtain contact information. This is so that I can ship you a digital photo disk after the show. You will receive every single photo I take of your performance. The total number will vary with set length and dance style, but it generally ranges from something like 75 to as many as 300 photos or more. All of these photos will all be in high-resolution.

If you would kindly PM here on Tribe, or via email (mab@cruzio.com), I will more easily be able to construct a database for for disk imaging and then shipping. Please provide me with your shipto address information, and when you are/were on at the show. That way, I can find you in the photo collection, and ultimately send you a disk. You can contact me as soon as you like. I generally ship out disks in the order I was contacted ... so your contact immensely helps me with organization for such a large project.

I do regret that I cannot provide this content to you in email form, nor as prints. It's much too much data to host online inexpensively, or to transmit via email. Last year, I created 160GB worth of Rakkasah photos, 22132 of them. You will most likely be receiving your photos on DVD media, because CD media is generally too small to fit all your photos on a lone disk. You can take this DVD to any photo store to create your own prints, and it's certainly readable on most late-modern computers for creating posters, art cards, business cards, flyers, or for web posting use.

If you absolutely cannot use DVD media for your computer, please do let me know in your PM. I'll work something out for you. I am contemplating not accepting CD requests starting in 2009, however.

As you may know, my belly dance photography is a gift of artistry to the belly dance community. I do not accept money for this work. The photos are available to you for unrestricted use at zero cost, without licensing encumbrances whatsoever. My policies are designed to promote the art of belly dance, to support woman-owned business and arts, and to expand opportunity.

I am doing something a little different this year though, with my "Dance for Life" promotion. This year, when you receive my photo disk of your performance on the West Stage, at that time please consider making a donation to Susan G. Komen For The Cure. If you want to do this, just think of an amount that is whatever you think the photos are worth to you.

Here's a link to my "Dance for Life" poster, which you will also see in the Official Rakkasah Program:
http://tribes.tribe.net/michaelbaxter/photos/8fe4700f-310f-4a18-9daa-cc05e973e8dc

Wish you all well, and looking forward to everyone's performance!

Blessings and Light,
Michael

We are pleased to announce that we are going through the final bits of recording and editing before we send our tracks off to be mastered and mass-produced! Hopefully we will have the LP ready to sell sometime in April.

We are very grateful to those of you who have prepaid the LP for being so patient with us. We really tried to get this thing finished this winter, and we apologize that this didn't happen--we want to provide you with the best possible recordings, so instead of rushing the album out we decided to postpone it.
That being said, we are VERY pleased with the results so far and will be delivering to you a professional product.

Once we release the album we will be putting together a CD release party and will be available for touring around later this year.
I had a great time this Rakkasah East despite a physical setbacks. You would think I would be sated from all that excitement and dancing to last me until next year. Instead, I want more and I'm feeling a little down. I guess I'm just greedy. After three full days of dancing, shopping, eating, and great fellowship, it's hard returning to a comparatively mundane life. I'm already going through painful Rakkasah withdrawals. Rakkasah it's so welcoming and inspiring. Doesn't everyone want those feelings of creative inspiration to never end?

I've got to say I loved Sadie, an older Black woman in Saidi dress with cane on Friday night, who absolutely rocked the house. My god! The crowd exploded when she finished. And believe it or not, before she went on stage she said to one of the other volunteers "I'm not sure how to do this. I've never performed on a stage before."

Aneena's "Razzle Dazzle Them" was hillarious! She's did double veil, cane, and then double cane and dazzled the crap out of me. hehe She got a standing ovation. Nice.

And oh my god, the chocolate cake!

I worked as the Stage Manager for the majority of the event, so most of what I experienced was back stage. The volunteers this year were a great bunch of people. And I think we ate half of all the chocolate cake ourselves. hehe

Rakkasah East is looking for some volunteers to help us back stage and at dancer check in.

We are asking for a 2 hour minimum to volunteer but would love if people could do more. No experience is necessary. For every volunteer, admission is free for the day you volunteer. There will also be free food vouchers for those who volunteer 4 or more hours in one day.

The positions open are Back Stage Manager, Announcer, Runner, Timer, Back Stage Dancer Check-In, and Front Door Dancer Check In. Volunteers are needed Friday the 12th (6pm - 11pm), Saturday the 13th (10am - 11pm) and Sunday the 14th (10am - 8pm) of October.

If you're a new volunteer with no experience, there's nothing to worry about. All of the jobs are pretty simple, and training will be provided. Volunteering is a great way to see what goes on back stage and a chance to meet some excellent people!

If you do want to help out, I'll need to know what day and time (start and finish) you're available and contact info (full name, address, phone and an email). If you prefer one position or another please let me know, and I will try to honor those requests based on available.

Let me know if you have any questions! My name is Suzanne and feel free to contact me through Tribe or at shushanna at yahoo.com.

The acts were on such a high level that it is difficult to start singling out any specific dancers for fear of leaving somebody out. I've always admired Dallia Carella, but her performance took my breath away. Jeniviva made those ostrich feather fans come to life and her drum solo to Raquy's piece was a benchmark. Just watching Sarah Locke move the way she does is a priviledge... and Ashara .... what can I say, but dancing Goddess. Vadalna and Manhattan Tribal stole our hearts. I don't know the dancer that did the dance with the glass stemware, but OMG what a spectacular performance. Willow is probably the most wonderful improvisational dancer that I've ever seen and was a vision to behold.
Aepril closed the Friday night show with a dance that no dancer would ever want to follow.......Holy Moley, Batman! What a great act.
There, I went and did it again, I fried my brain just trying to remember all of the wonderful dancers and dances I saw and there were just so many that my brain is on overload. Souhailla has always been the benchmark for a a great soloist, but the dance trio that she did was also breathtaking, they danced magnificently and played those big hunkin' zils like they were advanced percussionists...while dancing...WOW!
The musicians (especially Djinn) were extremely kind and generous with their time and hosted an after-party Friday and Saturday nights where everybody showed up to make music and dance, Bravo!
I know half the performers that were on stage and I can't mention them all cause I'm overwhelmed. The last couple of days my head has been filled with memories of some stellar performances and I keep remembering more and more.
This was quite the event. It MUST be an annual, it must happen again and again!!

Hello wonderful Rakkasah West 2007 belly dancers,

I have 22132 high-resolution digital photographs of every belly dancer who danced on the main stage. No one at all was missed from Friday's opening with the sounds of Pangia to Sunday's closing by Ava Fleming.

If have not already contacted me, and you would like your photos, please PM me here on tribe, or send me an email (my email address is at the bottom of this message).

I will provide you every single photo I took of your performance in a digital form on disk media, but I cannot make prints, and I cannot possibly email you the photos. Please indicate in your message your shipto address. Then, I need to know what kind of media you can use, either DVD or CD. Photos on DVD media are readable by a computer equipped with a DVD drive, but will not read on a consumer DVD player for a TV. This because the DVD contains image data, not movie data. DVD is more convenient for me because the photos are very large, and a lot more of them fit on a DVD. If you don't have a DVD drive on your machine, no worries, just let me know, and I'll send your photos on CD(s) instead.

The full collection of 162GB of photos is going to Rakkasah soon. Once this is done, I will be starting disk imaging for all dancers. I will need a little time to ship to everyone, but everyone who asks will definitely receive their photos. It would be helpful if troupes could please generally accept one copy of the photos via a single contact person. On the other hand, there is a large amount of data, so (for example) if you have troupe members in separate states, and only one set of media would be greatly inconvenient for you, then just let me know that in your Tribe mail/email, plus then indicate the additional shipto address and media requirements.

My belly dance photography is a gift of artistry to the belly dance community. You do not pay me. The photos are for your unrestricted use at zero cost, in any media, for any number of copies, without licensing encumbrances whatsoever. Free, as in freedom.

Blessings and Light,
Michael

Which dancers did you you like? The dancers that stood out for me (and I'm not even going to *pretend* I saw everyone!) were:

Fri, main stage:

Naimah, from Baltimore. I've always enjoyed her performances, but this one (viewed from the wings) seemed even better than usual. Great control, strength, musicality.

Leila Haddad. Lovely understated feminine oriental style.

Ahava. Very nice style, really grabbed the audience. A pleasure to watch.

Haleema from MO did a very nice cane dance, and I plan to steal several of her moves! (I've already warned her.)

Sat, main stage:

Suzanna del Vecchio is such a pro -- she really knows how to pace a show. Her dancing is lovely if a bit restrained, marked by control and symmetry. As always, a beautiful costume that totally flatters her body.

the band "Mirage" was really good. Great qanun player and wonderful singer.

The Bal Anat (Jamila and Suhaila) show was amazing. I loved the circus-y atmosphere of having all the performers on stage, clapping for whichever groups had stepped forward to perform. The set started with some very nice Turkish karsilama dacing, went on to hip-hop fusion, then the token male dance with a snake, which he handled very gently and effectively. There were Ouled Nail dancers who were fun to watch, and Isabella did the drum solo Suhaila had taught that week. The most amazing dancer to me was the soloist who danced on glasses. (Is this Tiffany? She looked familiar from the Sunday dinner show.) She did what I consider normal glass-dancing stuff, but boosted it up several notches with her fab technique and isaolations. Then she balanced on the balls of her feet on 2 glasses, held on to the third one in front of her for support, and did a split. Wow. There were jaws dropping all over the hall!

Mesmera's show was nice, I definitely like her better as a performer than a teacher.

Hadia was amazing. I think her oriental was one of the best shows at RakW.

Ansuya was lovely, too, although I worry about her knees. She really gives them a workout. Her shows are all high-energy and flash. Her workshop was pretty amazing, too, although the basic Ansuya posture just about killed my back. Can't do that leaning-back stuff. ;-)

Loved the beginning of the set performed by "SeSe presents Baktiari and Intisar," which had dancers in apricot costumes doing floorwork that made then look like sleepy odalisques. Very effective use, throughout this set, of large groups of dancers, and the overall set was well-paced and well-done.

Sat, cabaret stage:

Lotus and the NDC were even more amazing than usual! A real production number with lots of entrances and exits. They used black canes that looked like they were straight out of a Fred Astaire movie, and the troupe wore modified sexy black tuxedos while Loutus glowed in a white costume. The minute this dance was over, I wanted to see it all over again!

Sun, main stage

I have to say that I was surprised by Suhaila's set. I was expecting a jazzy Vegas-style number, and she danced to traditional Arabic music with a great little band. Little Isabella continues to amaze! She did a very nice Sa'idi number to "Ya Ain al Moulayatain."

Ma'shuqa Mira Murjan is a lovely dancer, and she delighted us with two sets of wings: large diaphanous pleated ones, like many dancers use, and then smaller silver wings that were attached to her costume. Very nice show.

Jim Boz is an amazing performer (although I like him even more as a teacher). He can always get the crowd going, and I always enjoy watching him.

Naheda from Germany... what can I say about someone who entered wearing a mask and a costume that looked very bondage-ish? She's a good dancer, much more jazzy than oriental.

The last dancer I watched was Leila Haddad on Sunday night. I was planning to stay to see Ava F, but my brain was too full and I had to leave! I was really looking forward to Leila's show and it did not disappoint. She performed Algerian Ouled Nail, incorporating new material and music she acquired during her recent trip to Algeria. Lovely....

Hi all!

Just got back from my first Rakks, and I was astounded that it is held in such a sketchy area! The venue is nice and all, but I was scared to walk from the train station to the venue past all the drug dealers and the ghetto-Donald's where they have to buzz you in to the bathroom! I came up in the hood, and am typically OK in such places, but I didn't like it at all! Plus, I know at least one vendor that had stuff stolen from their vehicle.

Any chance that Rakks will move to a less-sketchy area? Or start having shuttles from the train station so that dancers don't have to walk past packs of noisy rottweilers? Or have decent food in the area so that I don't go insane from eating my 80th hotdog or plate of chicken because there's nothing else? ESPECIALLY since the fest runs so late?

Just checking...

It so amazing how you can lose yourself in the moment - feeling like it'll go on forever - like it's the only reality that there is and the next thing you know you are on a plane going home and all you can think is brutpointnhgzingsmitch.(at least that is what it sounds like to me)
From our booth space we were lucky enough to be able to see the stage, (if you are on a chair). I must say wow wow wow! It was all there some of the most fantastic dancing on the planet. There were amazing performances the pros as well as dancers that I have never heard of before (but am sure I will hear about in the future!).
My mind is al twirl with new costuming and choreography ideas. One would think after 27 years we would have seen it all, but I am still floored by the beauty and freshness of belly dance.
I can't wait for Spring Caravan. for more more more!

I have only two questions ... Jim have you seen my bag? And…. Does anyone have Carmine’s number?
Cheers everyone for a successful and wondrous West show! Thanks for the enthusiasm and positive energy.
