I know some people cringe at cross posting, but I just need to know SO badly...
"Maybe it's just because my knowledge is so limited, but lately I've been a bit bored with the BDSS. I still love em and they're awesome, don't get me wrong. But I keep catching myself searching on places like youtube for other troupes and dancers. I guess I"m trying to find my style, and there are so many it's impossible to know about them all.
My question is, what other great dancers are there?!?!
So far I've been able to identify 'some' aspects of the style I want to perfect. And the dancers who inspired me include:
-Amani Jabril- www.youtube.com/watch - I LOVE how different this is, so far away from the traditional cabaret costume or the tribal costume... isn't there more like this out there?
-Aziza- www.youtube.com/watch -I love her enthusiasm and her bright smiley kinda energy. Not too keen on the music though :p
It's so hard to explain, but are there more dancers like these? I had started liking tribal fusion a bit, but then it became too... I dunno... rehearsed, I guess. I think tribal fusion performances are beautiful, but they don't have that "kick" I"m looking for, like that Amani video... now THAT'S got kick.
I need a KICK! lol HEellpp!!! "

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 8:53 AMI can help, at least with the Amani clip:
www.youtube.com/watch
Hopefully that works :)
I love that clip too, it's really unique and a very successful fusion.
I had seen a clip quite a while ago of someone dancing to an old christmas song (Something about Santa and wanting diamonds and such) in a bar - it was quite amazing! Unfortunately I can neither remember the song nor the dancer, and I haven't been able to find it again. Does anyone know which clip I'm talking about?
I'm really not sure what to suggest in terms of finding a style, because I'm still just trying to figure out how to put movements together :) -

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 11:44 AMYes, that's the one! I like that one quite a bit because it looks like the dancer is having a lot of fun - and it's definitely not the usual bellydance music! For some reason, songs in that style seem to go well with bellydance, and I enjoy seeing people bring that out of the music. -

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 8:56 AMYeah, the links are just to the homepage and I had to do a search but I found the dancers if not the specific videos you are looking at.
Personally I think your best bet is to attend lots of all-day or weekend workshops with big name dancers. BDSS is far from the only source. There are literally 100s of truly top dancers. Pick up some GOOD videos and attend workshops to learn new moves and techniques. Then pick and choose what works best for you to create your own look and style. Adopting someone else's style never works out as well as you hope. -

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 10:29 AMReading the subject of this topic, "Searching for that special something out there...", prompts me with a different answer for that question: "that special something out there" you are searching for is *your self.* You are searching for your own inner urge to create, to find that urge embodied in dance, but as the old wisdom says, if you don't find it within, you will never find it without.
Someone along time ago, I don't recall who it was at the moment, said that a writer is really looking for something she really wants to read. And this is true I think of all artists -- we have some urge, impetus, daemon, that is just itching to take form. We search around for books, poems, paintings, sculptures, dances, songs, that are going to reflect that urge within ourselves to find some means of expression, and we find examples, they are close... but... not 100%.
So we look at some kick-ass dancers... different styles... Cabaret has some maybe, or maybe ATS or fusion really rocks our boats... but then maybe something is missing too... Because what we are looking for is really what it is we need to create! And until we do, it will not exist, because the universe is waiting for us to create it. We learn dance as a child to learns to speak... grammar, vocabulary, and so forth, prose or poetry, becoming literate, but then through it all it is up to her to say what it is that *she* has to say. No one else can say it for her.
Here is something I come back to, from time to time, as an important message for life in general and at the moment for dance in specific -- for me to hear again as well: "For millions of years," Irish poet and philosopher John O'Donohue writes, "before you arrived here, the dream of your individuality was carefully prepared....Each of us has something to do here that can be done by no one else. If someone else could fulfill your destiny, then they would be in your place, and you would not be here. It is in the depths of your life that you will discover the invisible necessity that has brought you here. When you begin to decipher this, your gift and geftedness come alive. Your heart quickens and the urgency of living rekindles your creativity."
A different answer perhaps! ;)

This is exactly what I needed to hear today. I'm going to set this up with a gorgeous picture and have it framed for my desk at work! Thank you for sharing. -

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 11:33 PMThe quotation, BTW, comes from O'Donohue's book *Anam Cara.* The title is Gaelic, meaning "soul friend," and it occurs to me that the book itself is kind of like that... a wise companion. Its a book I cannot read through and be done with, as is the case with most books I read... it is one better to be opened in the middle at the moment strikes and read a paragraph or two or three and reflect on them. Like an oracle. It is *so* rich, and re-reading the same passages many times there are still gems to be unearthed within them.

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 12:08 PMThank you everyone for your replies :)
Karen, your reply touched me deeply. And it makes so much sense now that I think about it. I need to look within for inspiration, not search for it on youtube... although that does help a lot lol But I want to especially thank you for taking the time to post. That really made a difference :) -

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 2:21 PMYou're welcome... I'm glad it is of use. Actually, your question prompted me to make my own understanding clearer. These discussions can work that way -- we are all mirrors for one another. So when I am responding to something you said, I am also telling myself what I also need to be hearing.
I also have spend much time on YouTube and elsewhere searching through stuff. Some things are awesome, some are ok... a few lame altogether of course... but what really rings for me is what resonates with what I feel wanting to emerge. I haven't (alas) painted in a long, long time, though I even went to art school for a while, but still the paintings that really ring for me are the ones that make me want to paint again. It seems like that for dance as well... the one's that really ring make me long to be able to dance in that manner. I may not yet know how, of course, but man I want to learn! I want my body to do that!
Currently, some of the dancers inspiring me include Rachel Brice/Indigo (yeah, go stand in line, of course ;) ), Indie Kumari (I wish I could find more clips of them! They were supposed to be doing a workshop down here, too, but it got cancelled... damn!), and some of the clips I've come across recently of FCBD, and some Odissi dance as well... things that make my heart perk up and go "ooohhhh.... :)." ;)

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 1:36 PMKaren's description is lovely! I agree with many of the recommendations already mentioned, for example WORKSHOPS!! Take as many as you can from various teachers, and I'm sure they will inspire you in many ways. Some of my favorite youtube clips feature UNMATA from Sacramento and Circus Tribal from Ashland-check 'em out! Of course, there are MANY more...

Re: Searching for that special something out there...
Sat, February 24, 2007 - 9:24 AMKaveri... it would be my suggestion that the title of this post be changed to "Searching for that special something within myself..."
The most rewarding finds in life are always inside of ourselves. We search everywhere outside and when the discovery happens we are surprised to find it inside... there it was all along. IT is always in you waiting for you to get to a point where you are ready for it. Then you miraculously find it. Whether IT is strength, talent, knowledge, compassion, empathy, love, acceptance, adventure, spirit or whatever else you're searching for, there it is, waiting patiently for you. Self discovery is the most rewarding experience in life.
Good Luck on this journey of discovery. The Goddess of Dance awaits within.
