Hi,
at the moment I am extremely low on iron. I faint and am dizzy all the time. I have been a vegetarian, sometimes pescatarian, for 16 years now. The iron level in my blood is so extremely low at the moment that my doctor asked me to eat meat 2 times a week during a month.
I have eaten my first portion today and it was horrible. It doesn't feel right.
Do you maybe know other ways of getting the iron back up?
Next week I have some Suhaila Salimpour workshops and I already dread them, I will probably be sitting more than dancing. :(

Re: Low on iron
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 2:49 PMBeing nearly Vegan, all I can say is nasty nasty stupid doctors. I have never head of prescribing mean or animal products for Iron. Unusually crappy not so good iron supplements are prescribed. Actually if you can eat them, legumes/ beans have far more assimilable iron in them, then meat. Many veggies have iron in them, so I have to wonder why you are iron anemic. Either your not eating a healthy Vegetarian diet or you have other issues.
I grabbed this online just now, it should help: www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm
Iron rich spices: www.ferralet.com/Patient_I...pices.aspx
Other approaches to anemia and fixes: www.mothernature.com/Library...5/58.cfm
Some good advice and good to be aware of, to get more iron in your body. books.google.com/books
My X mother in-law and wife had problems with Anemia, they took Nature Sunshine brand of herb. Barbary root, and it solved their anemia in 6 to 8 weeks.
I am also a Empathic Medical Intuitive; I sense you have low stomach acid, which seems to be caused by low B-12 in your body. I have that problem, but i t is caused by autoimmune problems, so I have to take 2,000 a day in oral tabs from the health food store. B-12 is needed to repair the myelin sheaths on your nerves and you can get MS like damage if it is too low. But you need B-12 to produce stomach acid. Without enough acid, you will not be able to digest minerals and heavier foods. Meat eaters need twice as much B-12, to be able to produce enough acid to digest it. If you are deficient in B-12, you will deplete your B-12 twice as fast.
There are quite a few factors involved with absorbing B-12, and if anyone is missing, it does not happen. I have lots of B-12 in my blood, but not able to use most of it, so I have to take high amounts daily.
If low on B-12, that alone can cause fatigue and weakness and a clouded mind, and alter you mental state, to be more nervous, fearful, anxious, depressed and what ever.
Does this make any sense?

Re: Low on iron
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 3:24 AMThe doctor explained to me that the iron in meat is more easily absorbed by the intestines, iron in vegetables and herbs aren't that easily absorbed. I have never had any iron problems, but last April I moved and renovated a house, so I ate very unhealthy for 1 month. I think that caused the low iron.
She also subscribed pills, but it takes up to 3 months before they have an effect. Fainting a few times a day isn't very practical. That's why she asked me to eat meat, so my iron level increases faster. This way the fainting could be stopped.
I do have enough B12 in my blood. So that couldn't be the problem.
Thank you for your advice! -

Re: Low on iron
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 2:51 PMNot saying B-12 is also a factor, but I have tons of B-12 in my blood, my body just cannot use it, I guess like a type II diabetic, has lots of insulin, but is not able to use most of it,
Hopefully the home you renovated was not old and had lead paint on the walls. Lead has been know to displace iron in the body sometimes, but it does not seem it would take effect so fast.
Being you are Vegetarian, you may of been low on iron reserves, but ok on blood tests, especially if you have heavy Menes and not eating right, that can change quickly. I am not asking, that is your private business. My X wife was like that, she had a hard time keeping enough iron, if she did not eat well each month. Part of her problem too, was her body was storing it all over, especially in her liver, and when she reached 40, it all hit the fan. She starting have extreme liver pains from it. Hopefully none of the above is the case. They diagnosed gall stones which she had, but they were not reason for the pain. -

Re: Low on iron
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 4:33 PMI have a friend who is so low in iron her colon is giving out on her. Please be careful. She is to the point where none of the medications she has tried will work and if she doesn't find a way to get her iron up, she will have to have at least part of her colon removed. It's very scary. I'm almost never one to say "eat meat!" as a solution and would only do so as a last resort, but my friend tried everything else (cooking in iron, beans, etc.) and nothing was working for her. So she has resorted to eating buffalo, and I don't fault her for it. She says it's hard for her and she feels guilty every time she eats it. It's sad but sometimes your health is more important. (I feel guilty for saying this, actually.)

Re: Low on iron
Wed, July 8, 2009 - 10:28 AMThank you for the help! I haven't eaten any meat since my last post. I have never been low on iron in the 16 years I am vegetarian. I have always made sure I ate balanced enough. But at the moment I keep fainting all the time, and the doctor no longer thinks the Iron is causing it... So I'll have to wait until the test results come back. Wish me luck! :) -

Re: Low on iron
Wed, July 8, 2009 - 6:19 PMYou still might want to look at my first post above, I still sense a B-12 usage or deficiency problem When you don't have ought B-12 or are using what you have, it can cause all kind of problems, For me, it caused nerve damage like MS, lack of stomach acid, I became deficiency in many things, because my stomach was not digesting them. It also make me light headed and weak, and it affected my blood pressure, it was often 89/55. It also caused vertigo, if you know what that is.
You could also be intolerant of Wheat and similar grains and gluten, I am picking up something about this too. Do you have IBS and etc, Wheat could be doing it, along with some other food intolerance too. There are a lot of food intolerances which slowly creep up on us in life, and they are not like full blown allergies and Celiac Disease . www.foodintol.com/wheat.asp
Like myself, I am finding others my age, in their 50s and 60s, who have suffered all of their lives, and now finally find out what it is that has eroded their strength and mind all of these years.
It is worth a look.

Re: Low on iron
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 1:07 PMI have been eating lots of green veggies, drinking juice and eating fruit for vitamin C and combining green veggies with lemonjuice to get more iron from them. This in combination with a great healthstore elixir which contains iron, vitamin B & C, etc. my iron has finally gone up! There are 3 different kinds of iron and 2 of them have already gone up to the minimum level you need! Yay! :) I'm so happy! :)

Re: Low on iron
Mon, July 13, 2009 - 9:45 AMSeaweed is a great source of iron.
Also, spinach doesn't have as much iron as people think. When the initial testing was done, the scientist accidentally put the decimal in the wrong place, making it look like it had tons. By the time they caught the error, it was already public minds that spinach had a lot of iron, so it's never been corrected. -

Re: Low on iron
Mon, July 13, 2009 - 10:15 AMSpinach also has other compounds, to keep it simple, which bind up the iron, making it unavailable.

Re: Low on iron
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 12:48 PMLast Fall I found out I was very low iron and B12.
Phooey on iron supplements "not being enough." That is a load of crap. I took iron supplements daily and my iron level was up in just a few weeks and has stayed up ever since. I take Slow-FE from the drugstore.
Supplements are fine. Especially in the beginning when you need to get some iron in your body NOW.

Re: Low on iron
Sat, August 29, 2009 - 6:02 PMI've noticed a lot of people have already mentioned foods that have iron so I'll just add on some extra tips that I remember from when I had probs with anaemia due to my endometriosis (was not because of my vegetarian lifestyle).
When having your iron enriched foods, also have something rich with vitamin C such as orange juice or blackcurrant juice. Vitamin C helps your body to absorb iron. So if you're low on Vit C, having lots of iron still may not help.
Now caffeine has the opposite effect - it reduces iron in the body. So if you're one of those people who like to have a coffee with their meal, it may be a good idea to change it to a juice instead. If you drink a lot of coffee, it may be a good idea to cut down.

Re: Low on iron
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 8:46 AMhi i was the same way until i started taking a supplement called "floridix iron and herbs" its a high quality "vegetarian" supplement and it helped me out a lot. another thing that keeps my anemia from coming back is juicing carrots and orange juice all the time... these two simple things got rid of it, also another excellent product is concentrace minerals, when its that time of the month i feel the dizzy spells because im very prone to anemia all the time and i just take my liquid sea minerals and it gives me a lot of energy. hope this helps. :)
