Trying to be more vegetarian but.....

So I have been slowly working toward being more vegetarian. I don't eat red meat anymore, fish mostly and chicken ONCE in a blue moon. The issue is that I am living with and dating Bacon Boy. He LOVES his bacon and as some have told me Bacon has broken many a potential veggiehead.

I try to stick with more ethnic style foods such as Dahl and Rice, Hummus, things with lots of herbs and taste.
Fall tends to make it a little easier.

Any suggestions on how not to break when I am around the boy? He doesn't force me to eat it.
Also please understand I am choosing a more vegetarian eating style for health reasons. This is not a moral issue.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I went for a year or so without eating any sort of pork (lived next to a pig slaughter house for a while, that was horrifying) and then I found when I tried to eat bacon and pork again, the bacon tasted really weird to me and pork chops now mess up my stomach and give me digestive issues, so if you can hold out for long enough, your body will reject it.

You could try a more psychologically based trick, too. Get one of those videos about what goes on during the slaughter process (I'm sure someone with PETA would love to tell you where to get one), watch it, and perhaps the mental images will help deter you from the bacon.

Alternately, you could visit a slaughterhouse or pig farm.

There's a slightly more icky and unhealthy trick, which I don't suggest in seriousness, but I've noticed that anyone who's ever eaten bad meat or gotten food poisoning off a certain type of meat aren't able to eat that type of meat afterwards. ^_~

If you really want that horror of seeing animals killed to help you not eat meat.....vegetarian times website has a vegetarian starter kit. I think they send you a video with all that nasty stuff. PETA probably does too....

When I started out going veg, chicken was my biggest problem. I gave in and bought morninstar farms fake chicken products. Its seriously creepy how much it tastes like chicken.

As for the "bacon boy" thing, I can completely relate. I am full veg, my fiance is full meat. He won't eat any veggies except french fries deep fried to point of no potato taste. Yeah....that bad. So all he eats is meat products, I've just learned to deal. He won't push his meats, I won't push my veggies. We occasionally joke around like he'll say "mmm, I could go for a salad" or I'd say "mmm, I could go for a big juicy steak tonight" and it's funny :) It's just something we've learned to deal with. Also though, I was veg for almost 2 years before I started dating him...that could have probably helped quite a bit.

My husband is a complete meat eater - only eats two veg (potato and carrot). Anyhoo, I'm just not tempted to eat meat so that's not a problem for me but when he cooks his bacon, I do ask him to cook it in the oven (rather than in a frying pan) cos I really don't like the smell of it cooking (that and chicken curry in a packet - gross!). I'm wondering if that may help you? If you can't smell it cooking, you may be less tempted.

And perhaps you could also ask him if when he buys it, if he could only buy exactly enough for one meal for him - then there won't be any sitting in a fridge crying out 'eat me, eat me - I was made just for you...'

ooh - I forgot to mention. Have you tried Not Bacon? I'm not sure if it's called that in US but it looks like bacon and I think it's meant to taste like it too. I can't tell you cos I can't remember what bacon tastes like but it's kinda salty (the Not Bacon that is).

It's a tough thing, definitely, and I'm so glad you are trying!

I would suggest trying the veggie bacon. Morning Star makes some, and you can find it in almost any grocery store.

Also, try Bacos. Most of the cheap bacon bits are made with soy and have no real bacon in them. Read the labels - you'd be surprised! I buy those a lot and use them on my baked potatos, omlets and salads.

For me (since I live in Buffalo), the hardest thing for me to let go of was the chicken wings - especially since I worked as a waitress and had to serve them all day. I struggled for years with it, until one day. I finally realized that what I really craved was the hot sauce and not the chicken at all. So I started using hot sauce on french fries, pizza, veggies, whatever! It worked like a charm and I haven't looked back since!

Find what it is that you really crave about bacon - the saltiness, the crunch, the grease - and find something to replace that with. Maybe some veggie tempora or an egg roll with extra soy sauce.

    Good luck!!!!!

So, Luna, if it is for health reasons that you want to give up meat for visualize this: The cholesterol and fat in that bacon just swirling around in your arteries, not going anywhere but waiting to laminate to the walls of your arteries. Meat products killed my dad and that is only one reason I don't eat the flesh of others.

BLTs used to be a real treat to me, back in my carnivorous days. I hadn't eaten them for years, obviously, when I discovered tempeh fakin' bacon. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yummy!!! It's basically strips of tempeh smoked and marinated. It's got a good, hearty, smokey flavor and is DIVINE on sandwiches! It's a different texture than bacon, but is the best alternative, flavor-wise, I've found. I even prefer it to what I remember bacon tasting like now, because it's the flavor without the grease or fat strips (which I used to cut off because.... seriously, EW). :)

Check it out! I don't know what kind of health food stores you have near you but I get mine at Whole Foods.
