Hi,

Has anyone come across a good substitute for feathers to make masks/headresses etc??? One solution I know of is to sew and "feather" fabric. Are there any non-animal sources of feathers?

Thanx

Feathers are so cheap, as byproducts of the meat industry. I doubt if there are any reasonable substitutes for this reason alone.

Feathering fabric is a good idea. What specific kinds of feathers are you talking about - ostrich plumes, etc.?

This doesn't include a source to buy them, but is an article I found about how synthetic feathers are being chosen over real ones often:
      www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu...50300.htm

Craft stores should have synthetic feathers, and should be labeled as synthetic.

Sorry I'm not much help, but I think craft stores should have them.

When you say synthetic feathers, are they harmful to the environment, I mean ecological?

          Ooooh, good question!
          I hadn't thought of that.

I don't know what they are made out of, exactly, or how they are made.

Please post anything you find out about it.

I'm sure it's entirely possible and easy to make ecological synthetic feathers...but, does anyone make them?

If you drop by your local zoo maby they will have natural shed feathers(ours will give them free) then you can spend the$$$ you would have spent on a donation to help keep the pets...

Except, of course, many vegans will not visit zoos. I personally won't unless it's strictly a refuge for injured animals unable to return to the wild.

I pick up most feathers I see--esp. crow, seagull, which I often find in my local area, and turkey and peasant when I visit my parents. Some folks worry about mites and such, but I don't because I don't pick up feathers that appear to have suffered from mite damage (which is pretty obvious).

I do worry that if other dancers see me wearing feathers that they might feel inspired to wear them too and then acquire them in less than ethical fashions, so when other dancers ask me about them, I always try to explain that buying feathers supports industries that abuse and kill animals. That said, lately the issue has worn on my soul so much that I may stop wearing them altogether.

    love.

p.s. Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I'm a new member and this one caught my attention because it's an issue for me right now.

I pick up found feathers too. We have a bird sanctuary, for rescued birds, so you might check around to see if there's one in your area, rather than going to a zoo. As for the cleanliness, I simply dip the feather tips in alcohol to clean them off, and you can take a alcohol-dampened cotton ball to brush over the feathers. However, it that's all too much work, you can just make sure not to stroke your feathers, then stick your hands in your mouth. ;-]

I am lucky enough to have several exotic birdie friends. They naturally shed their feathers. I do incorporate their feathers in my costumes, as I know my friends are well loved (and spoiled) and that their feathers are a gift of love.....but I do question about wearing them as I do not want to promote the aquiring of other feathers in a less than humane fashion.

All this time later, I am STILL going nuts trying to find vegan feathers. I don't want to use found feathers. I'm getting sad, here, trying and trying so hard to find some great vegan feathers and synthetic sea shells.
