Hello there.
I am wanting to work on making myself more tribal costumes. I love the look of cowrie shells, but don't love the idea of using them. Has anyone found a bead or something of the like that looks close to a cowrie?

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:28 PMHey Liberty, good for you on wanting to use something besides cowrie shells. I have not seen beads that look like the shells. Might I suggest a seed pod of some sort? Get your creative juices flowing and soon others will follow. -

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 2:17 PMYeah, after falling in love with them and buying bunches of belly belts and jewelry with shells on them, I decided to do more research into the matter and discovered they are NOT just found. At least, not from what little I could find. Does anybody have any more definite evidence that animals are killed to get the shells?
I haven't bought anything since, but I am wondering whether or not I should even be wearing what I already own when I dance. -

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 10:03 AMThey are now "harvested' for the shells. Used to be that they were a "found" item, thus their value.
It is up to you if you want to wear them or not. I find, for me, that it puts me in the position of having to explain why I would wear something from another animal when I am a vegan. Ususally I have had the item for over 15 years and it still works. If I can get by without the item then I give it away and get a replacement. -

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 3:20 PMI don't know about specific shells, but in general, when you buy shells they are by-products of the horrible seafood fishing industry.
They rip animals from shells and kill them for food and then sell the shells.
This is a huge topic for me, because I'd love to have a tribal costume with shells and feathers...But, both are inhumane to buy.
In Miami, on the beach recently...I pondered the idea...What if I collect a bunch of shells from around the beach and use those?
But, I know that animals search for a new shell when they outwear or outgrow theirs, and so it kind of disrupts nature to take the extra shells away. So, I thought, maybe if I just collect them from up near the trees, far from the water, that might be okay, and maybe only if I take a couple handfuls instead of tons of shells...I felt guilty collecting and cleaning out empty shells to take home, so I only left with a few small shells from far away, near the trees and roadside.
I won't even use them for a costume, they're too small.
I thought maybe for jewelry.
But, as someone mentioned, I also feel too guilty because if other people see me wearing shells or feathers, whether fake or real, they don't know where I got them from or if they are real. So, wearing them is promoting them, and people will go buy them from some bad source.
I was thinking, if I could find synthetic shells and feathers, I could wear those, but put a page on my website about how I only wear cruelty-free clothing, and include photos, links, etc. to lead people to buy humane versions.
To do this, I need to FIND the humane versions...and I don't want them to look crappy, I want to find some that are synthetic but BEAUTIFUL. If anyone finds links for such things, please e-mail them to me at info@pittsburghbellydance.com, if you don't mind.
It's beautiful to honor nature's creatures by wanting to look like them, wrapping ourselves up in leapord print, seashells, feathers, etc. I love the idea...But, of course, ONLY if it's not from a real animal. Someone mentioned the environment...Once again, if it's synthetic, I want it to be good for the environment and not made of harmful chemical sprays and earth-sad material.
Isn't someone out there crafty enough to start a company that makes organic and beautiful stuff for us, like sea shells, feathers, animal print fabrics, etc.??? I'm surprised it doesn't already exist. Or does it? Anyone know? -

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 1:20 PMI made a few items a few years ago (see samples here: www.aliarnold.com/shells.htm) all will found items. And in fact, I still have two HUGE bins full of shells and bags of feathers. If anyone wants to come to New Orleans, I'm happy to share!
much love.

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Sun, September 14, 2008 - 5:59 PMI am soooooooo glad I just joined this group. At last - I have found other people who think the same!
I too have never liked the idea of wearing cowrie shells and have even been laughed at by other dancers for my views. 'But the animal's already dead' they say. I think that is a very naive thing to believe. I'm sure these dancers picture some young woman skipping along a beach and gathering shells, placing each one lovingly into a basket. LOL
I did research through the internet and I found some sites (wish I'd noted down which ones they were) that said that the biggest threat to the animals that inhabit these shells is harvesting for jewellery.

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Sat, December 5, 2009 - 4:54 AMZahira, I think a bellydancer who says "but the animal is already dead" isn't being very soulful, and should re-consider what she's doing...Because bellydance SHOULD be a very soulful dance, a key essential dance element, which dancers like that are missing.
Unfortunately, dancers who laugh at another dancer for such things are probably the same dancers who carry a negative, competitive attitude around with their dance ego. It saddens me to hear of such mockery. I hope you also have some supportive gals around!
I am going nuts trying to find some vegan feathers and sea shells, it seems like a never-ending battle!
I wish someone would start a vegan, eco-friendly shells and feathers for bellydancers business!!!!!
Anyone????
Hugs and shimmies,
Amethyst

Re: Cowrie Shell alternative?
Sat, December 12, 2009 - 11:44 AMIt's always been a wonder to me that people laugh at compassion. I think it's out of mostly guilt or frustration. Most people don't have the willpower to even attempt to live a compassionate lifestyle. SO then-the best defense becomes laughter.
I have to admit-I was one of the naive ones that imagined some terribly peaceful releiving of the homes for the cowrie shells. But after I had bought a massive bag of them for an insanely low amount of money-It occured to me that it simply could not be the case.
I sold nearly all my cowry shells back. I'm keeping the items I already have after much deliberation. But when I have a fully functioning dance wardrobe-I'm going to pass those along too.
When I mentioned that to dance friends-well, they know me better than to laugh. But you could tell they didn't understand at all.
