Arcata!!! Recycle your STYROFOAM!!! ... please...

I'm inviting you Arcata/Eureka fam. to RECYCLE YOUR STYROFOAM!!! You may be thinking to yours'elf... "but... there's no where to recycle styrofoam in Hum. Co.!"

Great point!... only, there is!

My good friend and business partner, Roger Pryor, is currently designing a Green Community up off of LK Wood. He is using styrofoam to make the wall systems (insulation) within the houses... and he's collecting YOUR styrofoam!!! He's primarily collecting the rigid chunks used in packing around electronic equipment and appliances, and for inexpensive coolers... rather than peanuts, drinking cups or other flexible foam materials.

The Styrofoam Recycling Centers are located at: The Arcata Post Office --or--

1798 Golf Course Rd. in Bayside -- you'll see the collection box at the end of the driveway. There are information sheets available at both sites describing exactly how the styrofoam will be used.

Here's a bit more about the walls FYI:

The Styrofoam Wall Systems will use reconstituted Styrofoam (aka EPS or expanded polystyrene) as the middle insulation layer of structural insulated panels - SIP's. The process involves shredding the Styrofoam with a large circular cheese grater style shredder and also cutting the chunks into 1" cubes with a hot wire grid cutter. The small pieces and cubes are then combined with Portland cement, water and acrylic adhesive and placed into wall forms to cure. It's like super light weight concrete using the EPS cubes instead of gravel and the small EPS pieces instead of sand.

The wall systems will be used in a new home in Del Norte County starting this fall... and starting next fall on several homes in the Trillium Creek development in Arcata (trilliumcreek.org).

The ultimate goal is to develop and demonstrate practical and effective uses of recycled materials in construction; to reduce the amount of material currently going to land fills; to reduce the transportation of recycling materials out of the area and remanufactured materials back into the area; and to make information on processes, tools and techniques available free to the public especially the recycling and construction industries. Exploration projects also in progress on the use of carpet backing and shredded cans and paper. An "open source" design process is available at: trilliumcreek.org and humboldtplanitgreen.com

Humboldt Spin Co-Op fundraiser!!!

The HSC is planning it's first fundraising event!! There will be DJs & samba drumming & a fire show & dancing & poi for purchase & fun & joy & did I mention joyful dancing fun!! More details to follow, but for now...
Plan to come out on:
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH. Doors at 8:30. DANCENTER ARCATA. Sliding scale starting at $3 (remember, it's a fundraiser to help us all!). If you sign up for membership, then the event is free!!
Membership is $25 & not only gets you into the event, but will allow you access to the Dancenter (mirrored indoor studio space) Mondays 8 - 10pm for SIX MONTHS for practice, learning, sharing, networking...whatever as long as it involves spinning!! We're in the planning stages of providing members with some other perks ;)

Hey Folks,
Just thought I'd throw this out there for your edification. Check back for show updates, images, video, and whatever community we want to create around our newest venue/ cafe to return to the Arcata scene. We are all glad to be back, to provide something new as well as revive the old things we love about this spot. Thank you for all your support while we regenerate a very special place for our community.
