so, does anyone know what gear kraftwerk might have used for most of their early years?
i've never actually researched it and they never really mention their studio equipment in interviews, etc...

Re: their gear
Mon, November 10, 2003 - 4:51 PMthey used a Mini Moog , a string synthesizer , -
also , a kind of sample playback machine/keyboard
that had choir and voices all stored on optical
discs of a sort. also "Echolette" tape loop
delays , about as analog as you can get. -

Mon, December 15, 2003 - 11:06 PMEmil Schult was the guy's name who did alot of the actual Custom Electronics for Kraftwerk. If you look closely on your
Kraftwerk Albums/tapes/CD's , you may see a credit in his name. -

Re: their gear
Mon, December 22, 2003 - 9:18 PMKraftwerk doesn't talk much about their gear. A lot was custom, some were stock synths with mods. When synths were analog, you could actually mod them fairly easily.
Their classic period (pre-Computer World) gear included a Minimoog, Micromoog, ARP Odyssey, EMS Synthi, Prophet 5 (you can see it in the video for The Model) and of course, the Senheiser vocoder. Some of these you can actually see on the album cover art.
They didn't really have optical discs for audio back in the 70's, but they still use old Sony videodiscs on stage for the visuals and have been since the '81 tour, I believe.
As for the strings, in the 70's that type of sound was usually done on a mellotron, which had dozens of little tape loops, one for each key. I think Kraftwerk used a similar tape-based device called an Orchestron rather than a mellotron. -

Re: their gear
Mon, May 23, 2005 - 8:46 PMoh , yes - I stand corrected BTW : A mellotron with Choir loops
was ~prob.~ used early on , The 16 Channel VoCoder inputs were manipulated
to sweep harmonics such as in "Europe Endless" listen and you'll
hear a voltage control sweep of the voice input as it relates to the
analyzer filter/envelope follower banks. Pretty complex effect even by
todays standards. TRUE DAT ! fellow Kraftwerkian's ! there were ALOT
of mods with the analog stuff ! Sweeeeeeet ! Theremins were also used at
some points as well. Theres a guy now that does stuff like VCO's made
from vacuum tubes ONLY !!!! also Sweet !!!!!
