Aloha kakou,
Below I am condensing information from a flyer I was given at the Berkeley Indigenous People's Festival a couple weeks ago. I want to tell everyone about this because this is an amazing effort and I hope it can receive widespread support and kokua from the Hawaiian culture community here, as well as allies in Hawai'i. The spirit of this effort by the first people of Turtle Island also seems very resonant as we enter into Makahiki season. Please circulate this email to all who might be interested.
Abbreviated and paraphrased info taken from flyer:
A Sacred Site-Shellmound walk is being organized in SF Bay Area from Sogorea-Te' shellmound in Glen Cove, Vallejo to Emeryville Huchiun Shellmound (Bay Street Mall) from Nov. 7th-25th.
Indian People Organizing for Change and the Vallejo Intertribal/SSP&RIT are organzing this walk to visit and pray with the ancestors at various shellmound sites in the Bay Area, particularly in places where these sites have been desecrated by development
For more information, including a list of the various planned destinations and dates, please contact:
Corrina Gould, (510)453-9002
Johnella Sanchez (510)772-8332
or email
shellmoundwalk@yahoo.com,
savetheshellmounds@hotmail.com
sfbayshellmounds@yahoo.com.
The walkers will need places for people to stay the night at the various destinations, groups to provide evening meals, donations for food supplies, the use of vans and trucks at various spots for supporting walkers and the elderly if needed. (My note: I bet messages of encouragement and hope would be nice too!!!)
Mahalo for your attention.
Amy
