Re: Thanks
Wed, June 3, 2009 - 2:12 PMIt was a blast helping you folks out again this year. I'm glad I got to assist the set up and see the engineering behind the Haul. It gave me a lot of ideas for our stage design.
And I was really serious about building my own calliope. Probably not as portable as yours, but I'd like something with the low end notes :-)

Re: Thanks
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 10:43 PMI am working on low end notes myself, the next step is to build the automatons that Shannon wants to go with the music. I plan to get the guts from a player piano and set up the calliope to play tunes via piano rolls. I will most likely have to come up with my own format, and I don't think they have TMBG tunes or Eno's "Put a straw under Baby" on piano rolls anyway. -

Re: Thanks
Fri, June 5, 2009 - 12:23 AMRather than trying to deal with paper rolls...
Have you considered using one of the MIDI systems that modern street and band organs are using?

Re: Thanks
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 10:20 AMI had thought of that, but I am more interested in something strictly mechanical. I am looking at a midi driven roll puncher.
I also am going for at least 36 notes, and I would also need more channels for the figures ,so I need at least 45 holes to drive music percussion and figures. -

Tue, June 9, 2009 - 3:24 PMI'd like to say thanks to the Haul ... for being lovely hosts ... I was only able to be there a couple of hours and on my own dime - which I hope supports next year's Fair. I felt welcome and had a great time.
