I tested friday in Inayan escrima (Thanks Mike E., for teaching and Fred for training with me). Anyone interested in getting together for some training? It'd cool to exchange with someone who does another style.

Re: Training in Oakland
Tue, October 31, 2006 - 9:01 AMAlas my friend, I wish you much luck. I had been living in Oakland and training in Kali for several months and repeatedly asked/inquired if anyone was interested in training with/exchanging knowledge of styles and got absolutely nowhere and no response.
Congrats on the testing, keep up the training and Mabuhay FMA -

Re: Training in Oakland
Tue, October 31, 2006 - 5:45 PMHang in there, i study Kali and may be moving to Oakland before long and i'd love to get together with other FMA practitioners. I'm in SF at the moment, so If anyone is ever on the peninsula and would like to cross-pollinate tactics with a student of Sayoc Kali, then say hello.
There really should be a bay area FMA gathering. We'll have to work on bringing the different schools together.
best of luck, goldie -

Re: Training in Oakland
Wed, November 1, 2006 - 1:02 AMI agree 100%, but can it truly happen? I personally try and reach out to peeps from different systems- sometimes with good results, and sometimes... well, lets just say I've had a few near run-ins. People, saying their art is better, or maybe they choose simply not to acknowledge your art in any way by smirking when you mention it. I mean, we're talking about an art that continues to be seriously competitive. The message will have to be "FMA Unity." Any thoughts? -

Re: Training in Oakland
Wed, November 1, 2006 - 8:32 AMahhh yes, the "My Monkey love kung fu is stronger than your Funky chicken kung fu" syndrome. Hello people, love your art and respect others arts and lets get together "without" the attitude, learn a new trick or two and have some fun and some unity. Save the competition for the ring...When it comes to competition, It's not a matter of whether your art is better than mine, it's a matter whether you are better at your art than I am at mine and if you want to be better at your art, get together with folks that are studying something different and learn a few new things to incorporate into your own style.
The days of "My master can beat up your master "should" be long gone and left to cheezy kung fu movies from the early 70s.
As for a Bay Area FMA group, there are already a couple out there...the Oakland Eskrima club for example...However, for those of us who are lacking in "funds" to join a big club, lets see if there can be a little unity and start a smaller, informal gathering of east bay FMAers for knowledge trade and general training and practice...that would fantastic. I only wish I could be there to join in but I have gone and moved out of state and there is NO ONE here that does FMA to my knowledge and those that do anything similar have stupid rules about being of x rank in an "empty hand" art BEFORE being allowed to train with weapons....damn! -

Re: Training in Oakland
Wed, November 1, 2006 - 12:37 PMYa I would like to see that. Some very friendly groups I've corresponded/trained with include Salinas Balintawak (Jojo) and Kamatuuran Kali (Gura Michelle, Tuhan Joseph, all of em), Guro Garry Bowldes (old school Inayan), Guro John Peterson (same- currently an instructor at the San Jose area Inayan Academy), and not excluding my guros Andrew "Limbas" Ma (the Garimot system) and Bob Manalo (IESA Serrada Eskrima), both great guys to train with 100%. Imho I feel that being comfortable with who you train with is important, and you can usually tell that you'll get along good with peeps. I try and cultivate that sense of unity within the local fma community, and have often thought about doing something cool such as a picnic, potluck, or what have you. It'd be a great thing simply to see all of us together in unity. -
