According to my best friend who is 1 of 4 paying students at the Bayanihan Community Center in Vallejo, there class got shut down today. They've been recieving letters of complaints from Tom's Tae Kwon Do stating that the Arnis class is SEVERLY impacting the business of Tom's Tae Kwon Do of Vallejo California. From what I understand, a huge majority of Tom's students are Filipino and the school is doing very well. I just want to spread the news that if Tom wants to be a successful business man in a huge Filipino community like Vallejo...maybe he should treat Filipino's with respect. Spread the news. Don't train at Tom's Tae Kwon Do of (Vallejo California).

Wed, August 23, 2006 - 12:05 PMDeal. I refuse to train at Tom's in Vallejo! LOL
I'm sure the Arnis class can meet somewhere else and continue. Sounds kind of petty of Tom's though. Is that even legal to do? -

Wed, August 23, 2006 - 12:51 PMYes, I am all for backyard escrima. I encourage you all to keep up with the class, "informally." Besides, in the Philippines, there are plenty of schools taught out in the open, in the dirt, grass, etc.

PS- Tom sucks! Booo for Tom!!!

Wed, August 23, 2006 - 11:48 PMHey backyard bangn' is where its at anyways. Ive done more learning that way, than in peoples stuffy studios, its a little more relaxed.
Sometimes training with the sun in your eyes, gets you ready for when, well . . . you have the sun in your eyes! And how else are you supposed to work on that island tan?

Re: A tiny harmless Arnis class in Vallejo got shut down by Tom's Tae Kwon Do school
Sat, October 21, 2006 - 4:26 PMso here's a question...does Tom demand that all the other forms of martial arts being taught in Vallejo cease and decist as well? I am not sure how many schools there are and who is teaching what but it seems that if he cannot withstand a little competition or respect someone elses art that it's "HE" that needs to be shut down. If this "community center" class can be shut down then other classes could also be shut down on the grounds that it impedes the flow of business for "x" business.
My suggestion, start semding letters of complaint directed to Toms Tae Kwon Do that he is impacting the ability of the Communit Center to generate honest revenue which could eventually make it difficult for the communit center to remain open! this in turn negatively affects the Vallejo Community as a whole. If Tom is having difficult retaining students, then perhaps Tom needs to reevaluate his business plan and teaching methods as well as his customer base. If Filipinos are gravitating to learning a Filipino art instead of a Korean Art then that's their choice and too bad for Tom

Re: A tiny harmless Arnis class in Vallejo got shut down by Tom's Tae Kwon Do school
Sun, October 22, 2006 - 10:17 AMInterestingly enough, I looked up Tae Kwon Do studios in the Vallejo area and found not less than 5 schools dedicated to that art within a 10 mile radius to Toms place. this is not including other arts that may be in the area.
My wife suggested that Tom is perhaps holding a personal grudge of some sort against this class in particular. Perhaps one or more of his students decided that a Filipino art was more appropriate to their needs and took up this class instead of his art.
Seeing that there are at least 5 other TKD studios in the area, I wonder again if Tom has petitioned, threatened or cajoled any of them to shut down on the grounds that their existance impedes his ability to generate business.
What it sounds like is the big dog is pissing on the little dogs fence post and trying to muscle out any "potential" competition that is not already well established. This Arnis class was of "zero" threat to him but it sounds like he's just taking revenge for losing a couple students to an art they thought was more appropriate to them. either that or they just though Tom was an asshole and left.
I still think that a letter writing campaign to Toms TKD stating that his demand that this class stop is a threat to the Bayanihan Community Center as well as the Filipino community in Vallejo. I am very much wanting now to advise my Maestro Jon Bais who was VP of the WEKAF in 1992 that this moron from Toms TKD is threatening the continuation of FMA in his own town. -

Re: A tiny harmless Arnis class in Vallejo got shut down by Tom's Tae Kwon Do school
Sat, February 17, 2007 - 8:01 PMIf he tried to shut me down from teaching Filipino Martial Arts I'd give him a good old fashion beatdown. Seriously, Tae Kwon Do? Are you kidding me?!! They don't even fight compared to Kali. It's all high kicks and Bullshit. WTF? You call yourself a Filipino Martial artist and back down from a TKD guy? Hang up your stick, dude. That's embarrassing. As soon as he high kicks you(and he will) destroy that leg w/a gunting and deliver a vicious Kali elbow to his face. I don't know what kind of FMA you are studying but c'mon! You think John Lacoste or Floro Villabraille would back down to some TKD clown? You should be shutting him down. Puhleze!
