Hello

I wanted to take a moment of your time to tell you about a new Sayoc Kali DVD (www.sayoc.com) that was just released by Personal Tactics NYC (www.PersonalTacticsnyc.com).

In March 2008 Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc, Head of Sayoc International Group, invited 12 instructors to a special week-long training session in Knife Combatives at the Sayoc training facility in Florida. The session, called Camp 505, focused on the Sayoc training methodology usually reserved for family. The goal was to radically improve speed and accuracy over a short period of time.

Camp 505 Documentary DVD (2-disk set)
• Explores the “How” and “Why” of the Sayoc Training Methodology
• Demonstrates how instructors at Camp 505 learned to isolate their Quick Twitch Skeletal muscles to increase speed
• Closely follows 3 Instructors in their breakthrough journey through the 1week training session
• Features Extensive Interviews with
• Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc
• Tuhon Carl Atienze
• Tuhon Felix Cortez

Camp 505 Training DVD
•	View detailed, step-by-step demonstrations of all the training in the 505 Documentary
•	Train yourself in the 505 Methodology on your own time
•	Learn the complete DCAT Flow Drill as seen in the Documentary
•	Practice along with two additional training sessions only available on this DVD:
• Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc teaches “2 Knives vs. 2 Knives”
• Tuhon Carl Atienze teaches “Single Knife vs. Single Knife.

The DVD’s are available from www.sayoc.com

Hope you enjoy them.

Whats your experience with purchasing bladed weapons? Share...

Whats up FMA family,

I am planning to purchase a few bladed weapons by years' end and since I am a serious student I am using discretion before I buy ANYTHING.

I am planning to purchase some weapons along the lines of:

Ginunting (first choice)

Sundang Kris

Talibong

Espada Y Daga (Visayan)

Kris Daga

and, if that wasn't all, I really want a:

Lampirong

...

My concerns are Balance, Quality of Steel, Craftsmanship, and overall authenticity of the weapon as well as Scabbard.

Not to mention I don't know the laws regarding importing and purchasing weapons from the P.I./Indonesia/Malaysia to Northern California where I eek out a living...

One consideration I've had is ValiantCo. as well as Kris Cutlery.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Share your experience with us...

~John.

I have been a FMA player for some time now engaging in traditional play and competing in padded and live stick tournys. I recently watched a day of bashing and smashing done by the SCA (Renaissance) Peeps. Pretty interesting, all armored up and using huge rattan weapons. Has anybody tried thier stick skills and concepts with the SCA?
Watching them made me want to play too! What do you guys think?

A tiny harmless Arnis class in Vallejo got shut down by Tom's Tae Kwon Do school

According to my best friend who is 1 of 4 paying students at the Bayanihan Community Center in Vallejo, there class got shut down today. They've been recieving letters of complaints from Tom's Tae Kwon Do stating that the Arnis class is SEVERLY impacting the business of Tom's Tae Kwon Do of Vallejo California. From what I understand, a huge majority of Tom's students are Filipino and the school is doing very well. I just want to spread the news that if Tom wants to be a successful business man in a huge Filipino community like Vallejo...maybe he should treat Filipino's with respect. Spread the news. Don't train at Tom's Tae Kwon Do of (Vallejo California).

Please note the following:

1) Striking is directly to the hand, head and leg. There is virtually no "banging of stick to stick"

2) Positioning and zoning using circular footwork to attack to the side and behind the back of the opponent

3) Finesse, focus, contronl and elegance vs. muscularity and straight line movements.

4) Footwork vs. a stationary triangle

Hey all, I just picked up "Filipino Weapons Training Vol 1&2" by Ron Balicki and his wife Diana Lee Inosanto (yes, Dan Inosanto's daughter), and Filipino Knife Fighting as well.

I have only gone through and looked at the first couple lessons in the stick training and the knife figting DVD's but I have to say, of the training vids that I have picked up so far, this is one of the best I have seen. Team Balicki and Inosanto explain each lesson fully and go through the movements several times from many different angles while explaining what the purpose of the movement is for and how it would be applied in a real life situation.

Ron Balicki has trainge under Dan Inosanto for over 20 years and you can imagine Diana has trained since she was a small child so both bring nearly 50 years combined experience to the table.

No training video or DVD is a substitute for an actual instructor but this DVD set is about the closest thing to it I have found in terms of quality of instruction and presentation of subject matter.

The concepts in the DVD's are based on Filipino Kali and Jun Fan Gung Fu (JKD) as taught by Dan Inosanto and Bruce Lee.

I highly recommend these to anyone interested. You can get the set, Filipino Weapons Training Vol 1 Intermediate and Vol 2 Advanced along with Filipino Knife Fighting at www.centuryvision.com

I had a chace to have a one on one lesson from her and I have to say that her style and the way she teaches is very good. I had a chance to meet Jason at the Kilohana this year in Califorina and he gave us training in block an flows. again another great person to recieve training from. Priceless.

Sayoc Kali WHIP Picnic in Central Park NYC

Hello everyone.

Very few of us in NYC have enough room to practice with our whips at home, or even at our schools. So what better way to get some practice than to have a small Picnic in Central Park, get some training in and maybe sit in the sun a little.

I will be instructing in Sayoc Kali 3 of 9 whip technique.
However
Anyone who wants to practice with their whip or share techniques is welcome.

The Picnic will take place at 2 pm on SUNDAY AUGUST 20TH.

I will not know what space is fre in Central Park until I arrive at the Park.
So I will leave a message with the exact location on my school answering machine.

The location will most likely be in the uptown region of the park. (80-120th street)

Please call (212) 647 1175 on the day to find the exact location.

Look forward to seeing everyone there.
Point sparring vs. Continuous sparring

In the weapons sparring arena we see 2 main types of sparring for points for the win. There is point sparring, where the fight is stopped everytime there is a touch or some type of hit that scores, and then fighters are reset. Then there is continuous sparring, where the fight goes for a set length of time and the fighters go at it uninterupped and judges keep track of scoring hits and also affective defensive techniques.
Neither of these types are perfect and hold pros and cons.
Also there is a reason, or philosophy why one would use one or the other in a compition.
In western fencing, the SCA, and the Cold Steel Challange there is the adherence to more of the point type system.
In Eskrima you will see both, where in Dog Bros you will usually see continuous sparring.
Ones tactics and strategies will be differnet for either.
Though we have been doing this for years, is there a better way thats do-able? Can we modify, hybridize, or embellish these rules so sport can more imitate combat?

Has any one done the Cold Steel Challenge in Ventura, CA? It will be at the beginnin of Oct. Its a good chance to try ANY of your techniques (well. . . no take downs) in the ring using knife and also sword! Its a sort of padded weapons match, so armor reqs are minimal; head gear, and gloves.
Len Thompson is talking about doing some different weapon types this year like halberd, and sword and dagger, we'll see.
You can check it out on their web site. Last year it was dominated by filipino practitioners, with some fencers, kendo guys, and even a couple of SCA guys.
Its a blast, and a good oppertunity to see some different approches to fighting.
Some cool demos too, our very own JKD Ron Baliki did some fighting sarong and silat blend stuff, pretty slick.

Folks,

I am going to be performing in a routine that involves combat with torches (which I am designing... involving bits of zumbrada, a few sinawalis, etc. etc.) and need some tribal/drum based sounding music that serves as background for this. Anyone know any good warrior beats or drum tracks?

Kali Klub sa FilAm ARTS (Semester II : 06.12.05 - 07.17.05)

Kali Klub sa FilAm ARTS (Semester II : 06.12.05 - 07.17.05)

The Warrior Arts of the Philippines, still a flourishing art, is very
much alive and well. Secretly practiced during the periods of Spanish Colonization, American Orientation and Japanese Invasion, it has been handed down from one generation to another and eventually made its way to the US.

Commonly known as Kali, Eskrima and Arnis, it is easy to learn yet quite difficult to master. The names may vary but the basic principles for this product of Filipino creativity remain the same and all techniques are based on a set of movements or patterns that all attacks must fall into.

There are some systems which specialize in long range fighting (LARGO), while others specialize in medium range fighting (MEDIO), and still others which specialize in close range fighting (CORTO). An acronym for the synthesis of the three ranges of combat (LARGO, MEDIO and CORTO) were combined to form LAMECO.

LAMECO is a dynamic system of martial art representing some of the best of the Warrior Arts of the Philippines. It acts as the focal point or vortex of these proven and effective arts of defense, harnessing and combining their individual strength and power, creating a dynamic system of combat, both armed and unarmed. LAMECO was founded by the late Punong Guro Edgar G. Sulite and this accelerated course, combined with art, culture and heritage, is primarily based on his fundamentals and theories.

Founded in 1999, they have consistently delivered the annual presentation of the Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) since their early beginnings in 1992 and has now added two other programs: the California-statewide Pilipino Artists Network (PAN) and the Eskuwela Kultura Neighborhood Cultural School.

Kapisanang Mandirigma, a federation of warriors from different
disciplines of the Warrior Arts of the Philippines was founded in 1998 by Guro Hospecio "Bud" Balani, Jr., Guro Arturo "Dino" Flores, Guro Arnold A. Noche and Guro Hans Anton Tan from Lameco SOG (Sulite Orihinal Group). This unique federation has an ever-growing but extremely selective membership representing numerous progressive fighting styles. The ideas that interchange create a dynamic foundation for continuously keeping the Philippine Combat Arts alive with integrity for future generations.

Kali Klub, an award-winning project of Kapisanang Mandirigma, initially started as a positive diversion against drugs and gangs for youths in the Temple-Beverly corridor, now known as Historic Filipinotown. Now entering their 7th year, they have expanded to teaching Children (ages 5-12), Youths (ages 13-17), Adults (ages 18 & over) and Elders (ages 40 & Over) the Warrior Arts of the Philippines in a non-commercial, non-political, combat-realistic environment where art, culture and heritage are integrated into their curriculum.
