My area of expertise is on insect derived drugs. check this one out:
Black-widow spiders may improve sex life
Chilean researchers say they aim to develop a new pill to combat impotence that would have the added bonus of being a male contraceptive, based on experiments with the venom of black-widow spiders.
The spider, famed for the female's tendency to eat her mate after sex, makes a poison that can produce muscular seizure, acceleration of the heart and even death.
The scientists, working at University La Frontera in the southern Chilean city of Temuco, have been studying the effects of the venom's various properties for the past seven years.
By isolating these elements, they could reproduce them synthetically in drugs to strengthen weak hearts and help men with erectile dysfunction.
Last November, they discovered by accident that one ingredient in spider venom could not only facilitate male erection in a way similar to the popular Viagra pill, but also render sperm infertile.
"This new drug could help the functioning of the male erection without having to worry about the partner getting pregnant," Fernando Romero, director of the research project, told Reuters outside his lab filled with the dangerous spiders caught in southern Chile.
The feared black widow has earned its place in Chilean folklore. A womaniser is said to have been "bitten by a spider".
Mr Romero said the contraceptive effects of the drug could last up to 20 minutes, depending on the dosage.
Mr Romero and his team have won funding of $US970,000 from the Government and the university for three years of research, which they hope will end with a drug patent. Brazilian experts and Chilean pharmaceutical company Laboratorio Silesia are also involved in the project.
Mr Romero said they were aiming to eventually produce a drug that would have a similar effect as Viagra but without any potentially harmful side-effects such as an accelerated heart rate.
He said they would isolate and eliminate the agents in the venom affecting the heart.
Viagra works by blocking an enzyme called PDE-5 that affects blood flow to the penis.
Several Chilean doctors contacted by Reuters were slightly sceptical of the project before seeing scientific results but in general welcomed the research.
"This is a good project with a solid scientific base. I think it is government money well spent," said Raul Vinet, a pharmacologist from the University of Valparaiso.

Re: Bug Drugs
Tue, May 29, 2007 - 4:07 PMcool. you are the only other bug medicine person i've run across. i have used a blend of wu gong (centipeda) with peony, licorice, poria. for the same purpose as the spiders. but now i look at my spiders differently. -

Re: Bug Drugs
Tue, May 29, 2007 - 6:29 PMThere is a diference between herba centepida and scopolopendra. E Bu Shi Cao is great for sinus infections while Wu Gong is great for paralysis and severe channel blockage.
Are you an acupuncturist? You sure seem to know your shit. Have you ever seen the seven forest product "eupolyphagia"? It has leech, cockroach, gadfly and earthworm. Amazing for migranes but not as good as the one with scorpion and aconite lateralis! -

Re: Bug Drugs
Tue, May 29, 2007 - 11:53 PMi was using centepida in a slang way. i meant centipedes. and its intresting, works well. no, i haven't heard of that blend, but it sure is intresting. Poison medicines are another of my long intrests. no, i am not an acupuncturist. My knowledge derives from practicing pre taoist, 'earth genii' medicine. it specializes in using medicines for opening conciousness channels. -

Re: Bug Drugs
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 1:01 PMI agree, Herba Centipeda is the plant Centipeda minima (A.K.A. e bu shi cao, shi hu wei, die zai cao or man tian xing) used for allergies, arthritis (wind damp) , etc. ... . The centipede insect (wu gong, tian long, chi zu wu gong, chuan zu or bai zu) as mentioned is used for channel blockage, internal wind, fire toxins, etc., ... . I've used the 'Excessively Limp Efficacious Remedy' (kang wei ling) mentioned above and it did work well for awhile, perhaps because I tend to run a tad blood deficient. Perhaps I should also mention, I wasn't actually excessively limp at the time, I just made a hobby of trying formulas like this for fun. It might not work as fast for people who are more severely deficient. It doesn't smell too good in the blender, either, so you might want to look for the pills if you want to give it a whirl. -

Re: Bug Drugs
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 1:07 PMI am back to epimedium and deer horn. previously, the epimedium was to heating for me, but now that i have a strong yin foundation, it is working wonderful, especially with the addition of a spoonful of bee pollen, morning and nite.
some of the ancient aztecs had a penis enlaregment method based on a blend of herbs, and stinging your 'stuff' with live centipedes. -

Re: Bug Drugs
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 3:08 AMDeer antler on it's own can be too heating for me too, but mixed right it can be pretty amazing, I think. Luckily enough of the common plants will work well for me but it's hard to beat the action of some of the animal drugs, that's for sure. Hey, I guess real cordyceps is a bug drug too, of sorts. That stuff can rock kind of like antler but as you know, can also be too warm on it's own. I've cooked it with chicken (duck is traditional and would be better as it's more of a yin tonic than chicken, and the extra fat helps the steroidal compounds get absorbed by the body) and pears. You should have seen my buddy's face when he bit down on one of the larvas that didn't get ground very well. I don't think I'll be cooking up much now that it's $2,000-$3,000 a pound, though. -
-
Re: Bug Drugs
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 9:49 AMcordyceps is now grown as biomass, so high quality amounts are now affordable. -
-
Re: Bug Drugs
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 3:32 AMYeah, I regularly use an extract of the biomass grown mycelium but it's not quite the same as the fruiting body with the larva. Even though it's 'standardized' the quality varies with manufacturer and substrate as well. Rice, other grains and duck 'byproducts' (guts and such) are some of the things I've heard of it being grown on. Even though the mycelium has most of what the fruiting body has, it doesn't have everything. It's also hard to make cordyceps fruit.

Re: Bug Drugs
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 1:07 AMI think "excessivly limp" refers to facial paralysis bells palsy. I have BLOWN AWAY a trigeninal neuralgia with a centipede and scorpion powder with typhonium and arum.
How wonderful to hang with people who know this stuff!
I love this tribe! -

Re: Bug Drugs
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 2:52 AMIt certainly could be helpful in paralysis caused by blood deficient internal wind but Fratkin's 'Chinese Herbal Patent Formula' he doesn't mention internal wind or paralysis. He says about the formula '" ... A strong tonic for male impotence, premature ejaculation and lack of sexual drive. High clinical effectiveness rate for impotence reported in China".

-
Re: Bug Drugs
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 6:27 PMTravis, could you get me some info about that? It puts the herb "bee balm" in a new light! seriously, I want to know who makes it and what they use it for. (and how it is made if you can)
It makes me curious as to what it is used for. -
-
Re: Bug Drugs
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 8:58 PMNext time i go get some ointment, i will save the label address for you. In traditional mexican healing, bee venom ointment is for rheumatism.
It is frequently mixed with coyote grease, for muscles, or snake grease for skin afflictions. Apply standard tcm methods of evaluating the taste. but take into account its venom is more healing than wasp, with a slightly more tonic effect for earth. make a standard to strong strength ointment like you would of anything else. fresh bees, dried fresh, ground and cooked. venoms sometimes may need a little stronger cooking than herbs, you have to guage that by trial and error until you get it right.
and the advice came from a flamer, go figure. -

Re: Bug Drugs
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 2:52 PMEarthworm is said to do these things Travis. It is supposed to decrease sperm motility or something and it also is known to be a peripheral blood mover. I'll look it up and get back to yall.
Celastrus oil is supposed to make men's sperm less viable and promote learning. I could see women trying to slip that into their guys food! -

Re: Bug Drugs
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 3:03 PMHere you go Guys:
The present invention relates to a novel sperm immotility protein isolated from an earthworm, Pheretima posthuma, belonging to the phylum, Annelida useful as an anti fertility agent, and a method for the isolation of an active factor in the Coelomic Fluid (CF) of commonly available mature specimens of the earthworm, Pheretima posthuma belonging to the phylum, Annelida useful as an anti fertility agent.
It also is rumored to maximize penis size.
Time to invest in earthworm futures.
