Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 11:00 PMThanks Goth;
I haven't attended one of your memorials so I don't know how it goes. Do you play music in the background? If so, I wouldn't mind putting together some of Caleb's favourites to play as background. -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 11:05 PMYea, put something together and we will play it ahead of time. We haven't done a memorial before per say, we will do it Rue Morgue style no doubt. Bring tequila. -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 11:33 PMHold it. Did I hear "tequila"? Tell me how much you need for the bar, too. -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 2:02 AMCertainly tequila would be very important! and lemons and salt!
What format should I put the music? Burn a CD or put a play list on an MP3? What form of player do you have handy there? Or shall I bring a player as well? -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 7:52 AMWell we are still looking for a PA but we have ipod as well as cd ability with a small stereo we have so far. The PA is 200 bucks which we just dont have right now. (le sigh) Any PA donations out there? -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 9:29 AMFor background sound for the memorial, we could use the small stereo. I'll burn a CD.
If a PA is necessary at your camp beyond the memorial, that may be a different story. -

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 3:04 PMHere is what I've printed elsewhere about all the activities to honour Caleb's memory.
How to remember Caleb Schaber this year at the burn. Playa time being what it is, pick the one you can fit in to your schedule or that helps you to say goodbye:
• Bring a “found item” like a piece of wood that he might have painted on to add to the on-playa Outsider Art sculpture that we are creating. If you have one of Caleb’s paintings, photocopy and bring that to put on the sculpture. Bring that email that haunts you still. Heck, Caleb once created a piece of art from a pizza box! There will be basic tools to assist and some paints to apply your note – bring burnables only please. It is your sculpture of your memories of Caleb and we will burn it after the memorial on Thursday evening. Check at the ARTERY for placement location.
• Make an origami crane with the assistance of the crew at Rue Morgue (9:00 plaza) early in the week to place either on the sculpture or in the coffin that Rue Morgue puts in the Temple each year. Write your goodbye to Caleb on the crane. This is a drop-in anytime activity.
• Meet on Monday evening at 6PM at the Black Rock Beacon on Evolution Rd @ 5:30, to help us swarm the city's porta potties. We have created a Mental Health survivors Guide to the Playa and printed 500 on sticky labels for the porta potties. In Caleb's memory, let's help those who are suffering to have a safe burn!
• Eat breakfast on Wednesday morning at 8AM and until the food runs out at Toon Town Disco. We’re hosting the Breakfast of Mental Health Champions. We are going to be sooooo politically incorrect as to knock mental health stigma out of our society’s lexicon on Caleb’s behalf. There will be good food to fortify us, heck, Rhino is even bringing GRITS! I’m crazy; you’re crazy too, come dance with me at the disco!
• Memorial at Rue Morgue, 9:00 plaza at 6PM on Thursday followed by the burning of the sculpture once the sun sets. Bring your own “shooter” glass, tequila might be involved. Heck, bring some tequila so there’s lots.
• Visit the Temple and leave your memories there. A poster has been created with some photos of Caleb. His name is on the Memorial Burner Plaque. One page in the book of memories in the center of the Temple is for Caleb – read about his life. Add your notes nearby.
• Attend Temple Burn this year, watch the coffin full of cranes enter the Temple and remember that crazy email Caleb sent you as the Temple goes up in flames.
• If none of these fit your schedule or your personal connection to Caleb, crack open a PBR and drink to his memory. Don’t be surprised if there’s one less PBR in your cooler – his spirit will be there all around us hopping from camp to camp looking for a brew and deep, spirited conversation. When he shows up at your camp, love him or curse him for leaving us all behind to carry on without his crazy, wild, genius. -

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 3:22 PMGoth;
After our chat the other day, I was able to reach quite a few people to help out.
Saffron Lee has given me the low down on registering for the Walk-In Placement of art, which is what we would be classified as. I requested a spot just off of 9:00 plaza so we won't have far to travel with tools, etc.
Larry Breed (Ember) is the expert on burn platforms and he is making a list of stuff for me to get so we can have easy clean-up. I will pick this stuff up at the Lowe's in Fernley.
Gary Ahnefeld (Colonel Ingus), a long time friend of Caleb's at Winnemucca, is going to assist with the creation of a basic sculpture that vaguely resembles a half-size Samurai, constructed of plywood. He has a ranch property just outside of Winnemucca. He has next Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday off work (regular rotation of days off) and will create this basic sculpture for others to add their stuff to. It won't be fancy but it will look like a Samurai. The Colonel is happy to help as he can't attend the burn this year because he's working straight through burn week.
Another friend of Caleb's named Robert, also from near Winnemucca is going to create a man figure like he built for the Frog Pond memorial earlier this year. It will be about six feet tall with the FU finger and we can put it on the roof of the Samurai. Robert builds stick figure type creations that won't be a wind hazard at least not anything that a couple of pieces of rope couldn't handle.
I will pick up the sculpture and man in Winnemucca, borrowing a small utility trailer from Colonel Ingus and stop at Fernley for the burn platform stuff then head into BRC, probably on Saturday morning.
Then we just need to get our actual placement by physically going to The Artery, signing in and we have to speak to the Fire Safety person there too before they give us the placement. Saffron Lee will try to coordinate that we get the spot I suggested. I don't know anything about the Fire Safety aspects of a burn so I would appreciate having either you or one of your fire people to assist me with that safety chat so we can assure them that we know what we're doing on that aspect.
That's all I got for now.

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 3:35 PMWait, one more thing. Colonel Ingus is the proud owner of the skeletal remains of an infamous Goat created by Caleb. It is stored on his property and has been since it left the work ranch.
Since I never saw the original art project of the goat, I don't have a clue what its all about. Here's a photo I found in the BM tribe collection.
bm.tribe.net/photos/d3cb...534913e9ebdb
Just warning you ahead of time for next year. The Colonel and I will rebuild the Goat and then we'll figure out what to do with it for 2010. The picture I saw was impressive.

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 3:55 PMYo.
Rue Morguers around the Sembazuru burn from last year should have their fire safety creds. Well, I do anyway. I could come in with you on Saturday and help out. -

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 5:38 PMSweeeeet, Rhino. Nice to know when I'm getting my first playa hug from!
I would embarrass us if I was alone. Complete lack of knowledge of procedure. I do however have a bit of common sense in crisis but I couldn't bs my way past their Fire Safety guy. Much appreciate your offer, sir. -

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 8:50 PMProcedure is simple. Plus, I have a fire extinguisher behind the seat of the pick-up. Last year, it came in handy when iRONic and I stopped at the Blackwater exit in Missouri at the site of an overturned 18-wheeler. We pulled it out, shot it at the engine (which was on fire) and I got the driver out of the truck cab. Saved his life, most probably.
But back to you. I've been the fire safety officer for Sphyre of Prometheus, a fire performance arts group out of Columbia, Missouri, for more than three years now. I know the NAFAA code (actually made a suggestion or two to Tedward prior to its adoption) and encourage all fire spinners, hoopers, and breathers to GET YOUR SAFETY ACT TOGETHER before you practice your art, and never do it alone. And you're not alone, Deb. You've got the Rue Morgue and the Radical Life Institute and the Black Rock Beacon at your call. We should have a good turnout of safety-minded people. -

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 7:16 AMYea the Rue Morgue is pretty well checked out on fire issues. Heck me and ironic did last years clean up as well on Sembazuru. Bring anything you need to drop off to the rue morgue. If it's early in the week place items toward the back area of our space so it dosent interfear with the early arrival teams morgue build thanks. Great job Deb. Really. Well done u rawk.

Sun, August 23, 2009 - 10:07 AMHoly Moly...
Great job pulling all this together, Deb!! -

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 10:46 AMDeb, I'm coming the same way down I-80. Do you want to meet anywhere? Do you need me to haul anything?
We of Rue Morgue and friends work as a TEAM. We want it done, we DO it. All it takes is our camp director (Gothalot) and camp manager (Mitzo) to point out what needs to be done. It's a true DO-ocracy. (As much as Gothalot says it's a dictatorship, we all work together to achieve a result.)

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 1:29 PMBite me Rhino, you will now spend one day in the Dungeon next to the bog of eternal stench. Mr Sassamafrass. Off wit yer heads! Let em eat cake and other assorted tyrannical sayings. -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 2:20 PMBite me, too, you Chicken John poser. It's the reason you cut your hair, isn't it?
"you will now spend one day in the Dungeon next to the bog of eternal stench"
Why would I want to spend the day in L.A.?
You confused hippy. -

Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 2:46 PMOkay, boys, that's enough, there's work to do!
These are the instructions from Larry Breed (Ember)
The summary is as follows :
- use corrougated iron or something else that won't let fuel and other
stuff leak through it. You can also use straight sheet metal
if you RIVET the sheets together.
- place your metal platform on Breeze blocks
(or concrete block, cement block or foundation block)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breeze_block
- make sure it is 8-12 inches off the playa
- bring rakes and other items to keep the fire under control
- burn and enjoy.
-----------------------------------
Rhino, if you know where to find 4 -6 cement blocks AND have room to haul them that would be a huge asset. But if you can't then I guess I should be able to buy these at Lowe's in Fernley.
I'm having Wheelgunner check into the DPW stock at the ranch for the corrugated metal - if I can re-use something that's already there then I won't even need to buy that.
Next do you guys agree with Ember's idea. It sounds reasonable to me.
Goth, as a Chicken John poser, curious folks want to know when you'll be running for mayor? -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 2:55 PM(shakes head) dont listen to Rhino on that. Chicken J WISHES he looked as good as me. :-P
At any rate, I was hoping for decomposed granite. If you guys want to do a metal platform cool but I like the sand. -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 3:08 PMoh, okay, where do we get decomposed granite? -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:23 AMMost likely we don't due to the cost of it unless the org donates it. Not to worry. -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 11:11 AMSo do I carry on with the other plan then? Unless I knew who to ask for granite, I can't really go down that path. -
-
Re: Caleb's memorial thread
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 12:22 PMDeb, I'll get you 6 cinder blocks, and bring a rake.
G-man, I'll donate a few bottles of tequila to the cause (I hope Pepe Lopez is OK).
