The call is out for you to join the tea party this Sunday!!!!

this is an annual celebration of
Lewis Carroll, his works &
his effect on popular music.
please attend as one of the
characters from wonderland.
bring tea & cakes to share
& bottles marked "drink me".
a song book & album will be
available to interested parties.
those attending may be asked
for a modest donation:
$5 for those in costume & character
$10 for those simply in costume
& $20 for those who can't
be bothered to dress the part.

cheshire rock opera

will be hosting 2 meetings next week in oakland from 6-9. if you are interested in learning more about the show and performance with the rock opera, please try to attend. I will be going over the script & music for the show & hopefully will be able to get all the parts filled and/or written in as the case may be.
odins day jan 10th at the owl's roost in west oakland 1527 8th st. between henry & chester.
thors day jan 11th at the panther's lair in east oakland 3057 e 7th st. corner of lancaster.

Wow, am I glad I found this group. I have always said that wearing hats is our most human behavior- it's the only thing we do that nothing else in the animal kingdom does. (Except for there's this one little species of bird in the Amazon that makes a little sort of hat out of leaves. But that's the only one.)

I am desperately looking for basic instruction on millinery using sinamay. Can anyone recommend a book/DVD/instructor in the bay area or even in the US. In addition can anyone recommend a good supplier of Sinamay in the US? thanks!

Hatters' Ball in NYC -25 Feb

Anyone else planning to go to this? It's a benefit for the Convent of the Sacred Heart's Creative Arts scholarship fund. I haven't seen an invitation yet, but I think the ticket price last year was around $80. I think a lot of the attendees are graduates of the program, but it would be fun to meet more local hat people. There's a band and open bar and good snacks and silent auction, and of course, a hat contest with nice prizes! Last time I went I won a basket of more hair care products than I'll ever use in a lifetime. Someone else won a trip to Jamaica.

Ok girls,
Hi I'm Randy the felt hat maker - Bitchin Hats.
And I see we have not been talkin since in August.
Ok tis the season to be felting.
No, just the other day I was over to my friends house and we talked wool, carded and got the spirit sturred to make felt.
Well, he had just put together this fabulous piece to sheep wool and camel hair. What makes it so exquisit was that it was the guard hairs mostly. It's not as strong but I think it will hold up.
Then it may shed fibers everywhere.
I like leaving alot fiber trail.
Anyway,
What is your latest project? I just pulled out a sweater that I haven't knitted on for over 2 1/2 years.

I see a lot of photos of things here that I wouldn't exactly call hats... more like head-pieces... is a dog collar a hat? So I'm wondering what exactly constitutes the acceptable definition of a hat here. Is there a formal interpretation of hat-ness?

Do tiaras count for example? Or are we simply too mad to care?

By the way, for those who happen to be interested in the idiomatic origins of the mad-hatter...

I have heard hat euphemized to mean condom. "He wasn't wearing a hat, the bastard," s/he said to the STD counsellor.

Or as synecdoche: "The Hat finally announced the theme for this year's Burning Man." Larry Harvey's stetson represents him in conversations among inner circle burners.

Other instances? Our President is all hat and no cattle?

Hat songs

Growing up, I learned this simple little song

My hat it had three corners

and had it not three corners
it would not be my hat!

It is possible this song drove me around the bend so that I became a mad hatter!

i own 3 of those southeast asian bamboo hats that look like slightly crushed ice cream cones. i've left 1 plain. the other 2, i've decorated with collage. no representational imagery on either, though 1 has a sticker that reads THINK PECULIAR THOUGHTS.

When did you become a head hat?

I use to hate hats when I was younger. My Mom use to make me wear them, I never wanted to wear them cuz it would mess up my hair so I never wore them. Recently within the last year I started wearing them....screw the hair. Now I love hats!
