from Hamburg....

I am escorting someone to Hamburg (July or August) then going off on my own for two weeks, returning to pick up the "bundle" and coming home to San Fran.

I haven't traveled in YEARS! Never around Europe alone. Single white female 42 traveling alone. What tricks are there for:
finding a place to stay (out of the norm-house sitting, share, no hotels). I am thinking of going to Prague and maybe another spot. Do I travel by car, train, ??? What other places should I consider. If you have any insight, opinions or experience you would like to share, please do... looking forward to hearing your stories.

Thanks.
Francesca

OK..I know this is insane but I have to do it. Probably not this year but the next.
Go check out the "Rickshaw Run" section of this website

http://www.instituteofadventureresearch.org/

I'm looking for a trusty partner, to navigate from South India to Darjeeling in a two week Rickshaw race for charity

How cool is that? Sadly I don't have the time to do the Mongol Rally (London to Ulan Batur in a car under 100cc's!!)

hi. myself and a pal are flying to kona on the 10th of may. we'd like to know if anyone would like to meet up with us there or anyone who lives there who might be interested in showing us local spots and treasures. We are two very socialble girls. we love meeting new interesting people.

We will be camping and staying in local hostels unless we can find some awesome people who might let us stay.

We are clean and keep our own. And we would love to cook for you as a measure of thanks for letting us stay.

i am planning a road trip from LA to Joshua Tree to Zion ( or Grand Canyon).

I need your expertise:

1. What's the best way to go about this, best route to take etc.
2. I have 4 days, does it make sense to go to Zion or Grand Canyon
3. Hot springs along the way??
4. Where to stay in Joshua Tree and Zion/GC?

5. Anything else you think I absolutely need to do/see/play/explore/conquer/awe at...

Thank you in advance good folks!!

I'll be traveling alone (American, Jewish female) from 8/18-9/7. I'm looking for places to stay & things to do on a budget (any suggestions would be greatly appreciated) as well as travel partners (females preferred). I'm flying into & out of Warsaw w/ a 3.5 hour stop-over in Zurich on my way back to NYC. I'll be spending approx. 1 week each in Warsaw (have a place to stay already), Prague & Budapest. I already have a friend cat/housesitting for those three weeks, but anyone interested in doing a house swap, lemme know. I have very eclectic interests/tastes. I love art & history, relaxing, music, dancing. Please check my page out to see if we might have some things in common.

Skiers can rejoice as it is that time of year again and the slopes are covered with skiers and boarders looking for the next great run.
Located less than 75 minutes from Seattle, Stevens Pass offers a great variety of runs for skiers and boarders of all abilities.
The resort is complete with a Nordic center, Pro Shop, rental area, and plenty of restaurant, bars, snack areas and shops.
The resort offers free parking and after walking to the ticket line, my assistant and I were ready to go in a few short minutes. The helpful staff was able to equip her with the needed rentals in no time and we were on the warm up slope in less than 15 minutes from parking. If you have your own equipment as I do, I was able to be on the slopes in 5 minutes from arrival.
The slopes are well groomed and attractive and have good visibility. I generally take a few runs on the Daisy slope before heading up the mountain on the lifts. The Hogsback lift is a good bet for advanced skiers as it is a high-speed trip to the top that allows skiers a choice of runs of various skills from Double Diamond to below.
What sets Stevens Pass apart from other resorts is not just the great staff and runs it is the fact that boarders and skiers exist well on the same runs unlike other places I have covered where boarders run wild and often are a hindrance to skiers.
If you want a break from the slopes, I highly suggest Tube City where you can ride a tube down three different runs at amazing speeds. For more information check out www.stevenspass.com .

Six Flags Enchanted Village offers a great mix of attractions for visitors of all ages. For the younger guests, there is a very nice section that offers age appropriate attractions that will keep children busy. For the more daring riders, Timberhawk Ride of Prey has opened offering the largest wooden coaster in the state.

The newest ride is the impressive coaster Timberhawk that is very smooth for a wooden coaster and takes riders on a spectacular trip filled with drops, turns and a great view.
When combined with the recent additions such as the Timber Axe, Lumberjack Falls, The Gambler, and the bumper cars to name but a few, it is easy to see that Six Flags is serious about upgrading the local park and making it a destination of tourists to the great Seattle area.
Those are but a few of the many rides as the Shockwave looping coaster is still thrilling riders as are the paratrooper, Ring of Fire and many more.

If a change of pace is needed, I suggest checking out the water park where all manner of slides, wave pools, and attractions will cool off and delight guests of all ages.
Of course there are a variety of shops, shows, and restaurants, make Wild Waves/Enchanted Village a must visit attraction for any visit to Seattle.

Magic Mountain

Six Flags Magic Mountain offers a great mix of attractions for visitors of all ages. For the younger guests, there is a very nice section that offers age appropriate attractions that will keep children busy. There is also a petting zoo for when something other than rides are needed for the younger guests. For the more daring riders, Magic Mountain has the best collection of thrill rides anywhere.

The newest rides at the park were the impressive coasters Déjà vu and X. Both are looping, and twisting coasters but X has an impressive twist where riders are able to rotate during the course of the ride. Riders start out looking backward as they ascend the launch only to change their point of view during the ride making for a unique and enthralling ride.

When combined with the recent Goliath where riders take a 61-degree drop from 255 feet into a 120 foot-long underground tunnel shrouded in total darkness at 85 MPH before heading into a series of turns and zero gravity drops, it is easy to see how the best has just gotten better for thrill seekers. Of course the classic Colossus is still there tough it was closed for renovation on my visit. Still, there were many other coasters such as the Batman ride and the looping free-standing Riddler’s Revenge.

Those are but a few of the many coasters as the classic Viper, Revolution, Ninja and Gold Rusher are there as well. Not to be missed is the Superman The Escape attraction where electromagnetic motors hurtle riders from 0-100 MPH in seven seconds as they ascend a 41-story tower and experience 6.5 seconds of weightlessness before they ascend backwards.

I am a big fan of water rides and Magic Mountain offers those in abundance. I love the log ride here as it has an extended trip out and around before a long drop at the end. The Jet Stream is a great mix of a mild coaster and a log ride as riders zip through turns and twists before taking a plunge. The roaring rapids ride and the falls will soak riders completely cooling off visitors on even the warmest days.

Of course there are the bumper cars, standard rides and a variety of shops, shows, and restaurants, make Magic Mountain a must visit attraction for any visit to Southern California and a thrill seekers delight.

Disneyland

Disneyland is often thought of as the standard for all theme parks to aspire as it has played host to millions of guests including heads of state and celebrities since it opened in 1956. Over the years the park has changed with the times, but the same charm that captivated you as a child still remains in the present.

One of the nicest new features to Disneyland is the Fast Pass system designed to reduce wait times for the more popular attractions. Here is how it works, instead of waiting 35 minutes in line for Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, I inserted my park ticket into a nearby Fast Pass machine and was given a boarding time for the ride roughly 45 minutes later. During this time, I was able to get on Splash Mountain and The Haunted Mansion before returning to a special Fast Pass line that by-passed the main ride for Indy and had me loaded in a couple of minutes. By using the Fast Pass I was able to ride three rides in the time that it would have taken to ride one.

I was also able to use Fast Pass on such rides as Star Tours, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Autopia, Big Thunder Mountain, and Splash Mountain. While I would have liked to have had The Matterhorn included as a ride option, it is still a great system that will help guests especially those with children better manage their day at the park.

One of the amazing things about the park is the incredible detail that is paid to the sets in the rides as well as the costuming and lighting. Despite the age of some of the rides, they still are as vibrant and lively as they were when I first saw them many years ago. The Haunted Mansion has had a nice makeover as new projectors have been installed making the ghostly residence seem to come alive. I was fortunate to get on Splash Mountain as it had been scheduled for maintenance the week I arrived, but it was postponed for a week later allowing me to get in several rides during my stay. The big drop at the end of the ride never gets old and the opportunity to get a picture of your expression at the rides end always makes for fun as you can see your expression on the big display monitors.

The classic rides are all still there and the new Bugs Land is open taking little guests into a playful area that was envisioned from the classic film “A Bugs Life” as well as the very popular Toon Town based upon “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.

With great rides, food, and a fantastic series of parades, Disneyland is still the best value in theme parks and while it does not have the thrill rides of other parks, it has the best atmosphere and tone of any park on the planet. You have to try very hard not to have a great time at Disneyland as the helpful staff and the vast array of things to see and do make this a must see attraction when visiting Southern California. For frequent quests, I would suggest looking into the season pass that is now offered as it is a great value for frequent visitors.

Pan Pacific Vancouver B.C.

Located on the gorgeous waterfront in downtown Vancouver B.C. The Pan Pacific hotel has long been a favored destination for business travelers, conferences and vacationers to this scenic city.
I have stayed at many of the top hotels the world has to offer, but I was swept away by the elegance of the Pan Pacific shortly after walking through the front doors. The spacious conference area was in full swing, as large crowds of people were proceeding through a security checkpoint to the function within. The layout of the facility allowed for a very large crowd to queue on one side of the hotel, while the other side of the hotel maintained a very spacious and easy flow to the elevators and to the escalators to the shopping level and the receptionist desk.
The check in went very smoothly and the staff was very helpful without being snobby as is often the case in hotels of high standing. I appreciated the fact that I was able to have my questions answered, check in, and be in my room in less than 5 minutes from when I approached the counter.
Upon arriving at the room, I was amazed at not only the stunning view of the water and mountains, but by the sheer size and layout of the room. Not only were there two bathrooms, but also there was a separate tub, and shower in the master bathroom. The living room had a full-sized desk, a living room table, two couches, and an entertainment center complete with a cd player and a selection of classical music. The real treat was the bedroom that had its own television, ample closets, as well as an in room sink. I had only a few moments to take in the room, as a pressing schedule required me to run some errands downtown prior to returning to the hotel.
I returned to the room not two hours later to find that a full turndown service had been preformed, complete with a robe and slippers being prepared on the bed. I had a relaxing dinner in the room, and then decided to try some of the spa facilities that the hotel offers. A few moments later I was enjoying a very warm out door hot tub adjacent to a heated outdoor pool on the eighth floor terrace. The view from the tub was easily the best view I had enjoyed from a hotel tub as the lights of the city as well as the passing boats allowed me to truly relax, and get away from the troubles of life.
While I spent the rest of the evening enjoying the room and watching television, I found the bed to be very comfortable as there was none of the usual adjustment to a new bed, and I was able to sleep very soundly.
Sunday morning was just what the doctor ordered, as I was able to relax in the room with in-room coffee and watch television to catch up on the news of the day. In most hotels, maid service is attempting to get into the room around 9 Am, but the Pan Pacific staff let me relax and start the day when I was ready. With a Noon checkout, I was overjoyed that I was able to relax and enjoy my morning without feeling rushed.
Checkout was like everything else, very easy and relaxed and was as friendly and efficient as everything that I experienced during my stay at the Pan Pacific Vancouver. My only regret was that I did not have more time to fully take advantage of the numerous features the hotel offers from a full service spa and exercise room, to business services and a dazzling array of dining opportunities. That being said, the Pan Pacific Vancouver is a rare mix these days, a full-service hotel, that is ideal for business, yet is perfect for weekend getaways where you can do things at your own pace with the knowledge that the helpful staff and abundant services are there when you need it. Top marks all around.

Located on the gorgeous waterfront in downtown Victoria B.C. The scenic Empress hotel has long been a favored destination for business travelers, conferences and vacationers to this scenic city.

I have stayed at many of the top hotels the world has to offer, but I enjoyed the old world charm of the hotel as well as the modern conveniences it offered.
The check in went very smoothly and the staff was very helpful without being snobby as is often the case in hotels of high standing. I appreciated the fact that I was able to have my questions answered, check in, and be in my room in less than 5 minutes from when I approached the counter.

Upon arriving at the room, I found it to be a comfortable and practical room. There living area was not overly spacious as a bed couch, table and desk were all located within the living area with the bathroom and ample closets nearby. The Gold Level of the hotel does offer more spacious and luxurious rooms, but for many, I am sure the room I had will more than suffice.

I returned to the room from a few hours of shopping in the downtown area to find a cheese and cracker tray in the room and after a relaxing dinner in the room, I decided to try some of the spa facilities that the hotel offers. A few moments later I was enjoying a very warm hot tub that is in an atrium style area that also contained and indoor pool and was overlooked by a weight room.

Sunday morning was a busy day as I had an appointment to view the wax museum and do some further shopping in the area before High tea at the Hotel. The tea is a traditional British tea complete with scones, cucumber sandwiches and tarts. It was the perfect capper for the trip.

Checkout was like everything else, very easy and relaxed and was as friendly and efficient as everything that I experienced during my stay at the Empress. The hotel is located in easy walking distance from the numerous shops, restaurants, theaters and attractions of the downtown and waterfront areas. The Empress is a rare mix these days, a full-service hotel, that is ideal for business, yet is perfect for weekend getaways where you can do things at your own pace with the knowledge that the helpful staff and abundant services are there when you need it.

Located in scenic Surrey British Columbia, the Aston Pacific Inn is a fantastic place to stay for a relaxing weekend away or a full vacation. Located just 8 miles from the U.S. border, the Aston Pacific Inn is adjacent to the scenic White Rocks area and is within easy access of Vancouver.
The Aston offers quality family dining at the Pantry restaurant and a fantastic Sunday brunch is part of the impressive menu options. There is also an after-hours club with music and dancing for the night owls.
The Aston also includes a full work out facility and spacious locker room facility. I enjoyed the comfortable indoor pool as well as the spacious hot tub set in a gorgeous red rock setting.
The rooms were spacious and offered all of the standard amenities. For younger guests, the Aston offers an arcade and Internet access stations. Visitors can also rent mopeds for travel to White Rocks for an afternoon of shopping and dining in a scenic setting.
The Aston also has a currency exchange office on site and is just another example of the amenities that are offered to guests. For more information please visit their website at www.pacificinn.com and make a reservation for a high quality and relaxing visit.
