"a patriot should always be prepared the defend his country against the government."
this was on a bumper sticker on an old millitary jeep with a kayak sitting in the back at a music festival after seeing it i found the owner shook his hand and thought of this tribe. id like to see somemore quotes from him, ive read a couple books he wrote but passed them on after finishing them.

Re: edward abbey
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 12:44 AMI had never heard of Edward Abbey before. However, I found a bunch of his quotes on the Internet. Of the ones I found, here are the ones I enjoyed the most:
"Abolition of a woman's right to abortion, when and if she wants it, amounts to compulsory maternity: a form of rape by the State." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"Anarchism is founded on the observation that since few men are wise enough to rule themselves, even fewer are wise enough to rule others." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"Love implies anger. The man who is angered by nothing cares about nothing." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"One man alone can be pretty dumb sometimes, but for real bona fide stupidity, there ain't nothin' can beat teamwork." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"Our 'neoconservatives' are neither new nor conservative, but old as Bablyon and evil as Hell." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"Society is like a stew. If you don't stir it up every once in a while then a layer of scum floats to the top." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"The idea of wilderness needs no defense, it only needs defenders." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"The tragedy of modern war is that the young men die fighting each other - instead of their real enemies back home in the capitals." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"There is science, logic, reason; there is thought verified by experience. And then there is California." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"When a man's best friend is his dog, that dog has a problem." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)
"Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit." - Edward Abbey (1927-1989)

from edward abbey to an earlier environmentalist
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 2:42 AMTo find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter; to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.

Re: from edward abbey to Rachel Carson, environmentalist
Fri, September 19, 2008 - 6:45 PMIf I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life.

If such a wish came to pass, it would give us back paradise, wouldn't it? We'd be free to re-enter the Garden of Eden.
