Marriage between American and Danish

Hey is there anyone out there that is familiar with the laws regarding a foreign marriage in Denmark? Do you have any insight into which country is better to get married in? USA vs. Denmark. Basically which country is not going to punish you by their standards, by the laws. I recently heard that USA has placed a new law stating that if a US citizen gets married in a foreign country then they cant live in US for 5 years. Trying to locate this law. Has anyone ever gone through the procedures of marrying a US citizen in Denmark. What was your experience like? Do you know of any loopholes, websites, knowledge that would help in this decision! Any information would be appreciated! Thanks!

I am no expert but I know that marrying a foreigner poses problems for Danish citizens in regard to which country the couple is allowed to live in. We have a fairly right wing government and they have introduced laws stating that a couple should live in the country 'they have the most in common with' - and obviously that is a matter of interpretation from country to country. This basically means that a Dane who has lived for two years in the States and has married an American might not be able to move back with his wife or husband if the authorities say they have more in common with the US than with Denmark.

The law was apparently made to keep people from Third World (read: Moslem) countries out and has been softened by making bilateral agreements with Western countries, whose citizens are then treated better. I dunno the exact laws when it comes to Americans, but you will have to check it out before doing anything, obviously.

Thanks for the info and yes it does get a bit sticky in some areas but its not like it has never been done before. Its just a matter of weighing all your options. Makes for an interesting battle of loopholes and paperwork, but worth it all if it is something both are after!!

hi my name is lisa ..i am australian and married to a dane ..i think the best thing to do is get married in the place you want to live together we found that the easiest ..so we got married in denmark and i am now living here ..i have a friend who married an american and i know once you get married you cant leave the country for some time so i think thats actually true..but i have to say when i tried to get imformation from the danish embassy in australia it was all very confusing ..it was better for us that i came to denmark and got married because only the people at the embassy here could really help us ..be prepared though you will probably have to start your whole education over again like i am having to here in denmark..but of course if your planning on living in america together it might not be necessary..
