How about Danish licorice? Have you had it? It's like acid--it'll burn a whole through your stomach!

Danish licorice is good. We have some really good licorice in Sweden too. But nobody beats Finland when it comes to licorice. Try Panda or Fazer for exemple.

Hahaha.. Jimmy you must be the only adult swede alive that has not tasted danish beer ;) - and yes, it is that good - Carlsberg's slogan is "probably the best beer in the "', and has not yet been contested....

      Ha ha ha.

Yes, Danish beer is good, very good. But, my favourite is Murphy's Irish Stout.

I have had both the Carlsberg and the Tuborg beers from Denmark. All my Danish friends say Tuborg is the better beer, but it's too sweet for me so I like Carlsberg better. Although Tuborg is more smooth in texture and taste though.

I love the Carlsberg and it's offshoot, Elephant but, I can't seem to find any Tuborg here in the states. That sucks because everyone tells me Tuborg is better than Carlsberg. Do they even export it to the states?

Danish butter cookies are one of my favorite hiking foods. The French petite burre (spelling?) are also pretty good.
    • The water in Denmark

Please pardon my idle curiosity. I've heard that the water in Denmark is quite "hard", i.e. it has a high calcium and/or magnesium content. The hardness is supposed to make Danish water taste better than the water in many other areas, and to cause major plumbing problems. Supposedly, the idea of using zeolite-based water-softening units is repugnant to most Danes. Is the rumor true, or is it just another urban legend?

It is very true - however the danish underground varies a lot - so you will find somewhat softer water in western Jutland.

The reason for not wanting to soften the water is as follows:

First of all, the waterpipes is given a thin layer of depositing calcium during years of usage. This makes it more difficult for heavy metals and other 'stuff' from the pipes to get into the water.

Second - a use of water softening remedies would also require the use of cleansening the drinking water in the pipes. In Denmark the drinking water is pumped directly from the underground. It undertakes an oxidaxiation and afterwards a filtering or two. Afterwards it is going to the pipes. No cleansening chemicals are added, such as chlorine etc.

Only in a few places are chlorine added - mainly around Copenhagen. The reason for this is, that there is not enough underground water - so they have to use surface water as well, which requires a bit more from the water-stations.

Of course we have accidents for polluted drinking water from time to time. For 4 years ago, Aarhus - the second largest town, had to boil its drinking water for 3 weeks, due to a pollution of birdshit into a watertower (a transmission antenna for cell phones had been put up - and of course they drilled a bit to much into the concrete).

And yes - it is hell for coffeemachines and other household items - but we have gotten used to it.
