Alright, as I'm new here I'm sure this question is a tad redundant, however I couldn't find anything similar.
So.
I have to choose where, as a transfer student, I want my single to be on campus.
I'm currently trying to decide between porter and crown, stevenson being my first choice but unfortunately certian ex's of mine would be in danger of losing their more prominent reproductive organs if we happened to *bump into eachother, and he has taken root and infested that region of the campus.
My concern, mostly, is that I'm there to work my arse off in a double major for History and theater, and perhaps a huge social life is the last thing I need. It's more likely for my first few quarters at least that I'm going to be more involved with my history major, most of the classes being around Crown/Merrill etc.
I hear the crown rooms are teensy tiny, and that porter kids are awesome but a little on the dramatic/stoner side. Not that I'd know anything about it, being a humble community college student.
Can I beg you for your opinions?
Peace out,
Kayt

Re: It's time to choose housing.....
Mon, May 22, 2006 - 4:05 AMif you're a transfer student...er...the frosh dorms might not be the best place for ya. It depends on what you're looking for. Crown really is more nerdy and science oriented while porter really is artsy and theater based. If you're looking for peace and quiet crown may be closer to what you're looking for(as quiet as freshman dorms can get), porter may be more interesting to hang around as an older student. Room-wise singles are pretty much small wherever you go (the village being the exception...NOT THAT I RECOMMEND IT). Don't worry about walking from porter to crown or vice-versa..once you know your way around you can walk across campus in 15-20 mins *shrugs* personally I prefer the smaller three story buildings of crown (plus basement) and four building quads of crown to the MASSIVE vertical sprawl of porter's A and B buildings (but there quad is a much cooler hang out spot). Lastly crown really is conveniantly located cardiac hill gets you in shape and it's always easier to convince yourself to go to class when you just have to roll out of bed and walk downhill versus the reverse. And YES I am avoiding writing a paper. Two papers. Due in four hours. *sigh* goodluck though, hope you get housing you like -

Re: It's time to choose housing.....
Tue, May 23, 2006 - 9:32 PMThat's pretty much what I was thinking ^-^
I always liked living on a hill when I was a kid, and prefer the smaller settings to Porter's appartment building feel.
I've also come to the realization that I'm a little sick of art kids; everything is such a big drama with them and, honestly, anyone spending their parents money on a degree at a UC that they aren't going to be able to use (unless they really apply themselves and are serious, or get very lucky) aren't kids I want to live with.
At least the art kids here are a pain in the neck that way (*sigh, I take nine units and live with my parents and don't work, life is so stressful :)
Thanks for the kickass insight, and good luck on your paper (I'm procrastinating against an anthropology final myself).
