Re: lovin' the new album

Re: lovin' the new album
10/27I haven't had enough time to properly absorb it, but my initial impression is that it's not one of his better albums. It really doesn't sound finished to me. A number of the songs seem strangely lifeless. I'd probably rank them:
Elliott Smith
XO
Either/Or
Roman Candle
Basement Under a Hill
Figure 8

Re: lovin' the new album
10/27i have to give the new one more time to sink in, but i tend to agree
i rank them like this:
Either/Or
XO (damn near a photo finish)
Elliott Smith (or as I call it "Kill Rock Stars")
Roman Candle
Figure 8
from a basement on a hill (the ranking of these last two may change as i get more of a chance to listen to basement... i suspect it will change, as to me, basement sounds more like his prior work then fig 8 does... before basement came out, fig 8 was by far my least fave elliott album even though there are a few tracks i really love) -

Re: lovin' the new album
10/28I don't know if Basement can ever sound *right* to me because I'm sure that it would sound differently (and have different songs) if Elliott were here to mix it (and choose the songs). I have spent a good amount of time listening to it and I still like all the others more, but my favorite songs on the new one are probably A Passing Feeling, The Last Hour, and Little One. -

Re: lovin' the new album
11/01Haven't got it yet, but did you cry the first time you listened? I'm scared I'll get all kinds of emotional when I get it. -

Re: lovin' the new album
11/02I can't remember if I cried the *first* time I listened - I was doing lots of crying that week anyway. I bought the album at the midnight sale the night before, so I think that I was maybe just too tired by the time I got it, but it definitely brought on a flood of emotions - mostly something between disbelief and denial that he's gone. -

Re: lovin' the new album
11/13OK, I got it this week and love it already.
Woke up with "Fond Farewell to a Friend" in my head this morning, so that's saying something.

Re: lovin' the new album
11/17Yes I love the new album too... it is sad and beautiful, all the more because we know how real his pains were.
Finally got a chance to pay my respects at the "Figure 8" wall on Sunset. I've added pictures to my album if you want to see them :)
