I like Elliott's voice. It's not "perfect", but I really like it (and maybe being "perfect" isn't what you want). It's quite sweet, but not in a saccharine way (I can't think of a lot of saccharine pop voices, but as an example - Dolly Parton's).
What other male voices (or maybe even females) would you say could affect you like Elliott's voice could? He don't have to sound *the same*, but you'd put him in the same class as Elliott, as far as the effect the voice has on you.
I like other male singers' voices, but I can't think of one that I'd put in the same class as Elliott's. As for a fellow pop male singer whose voice I've seen praised a lot, that'd be Jeff Buckley. I think he has a nice voice, but it's not one of my faves. I like some of his songs but am not really a fan (I still wonder if a good part of his wide popularity is 'cause of his mix of good looks & talent).
There was a period of time when I'd put on Elliott at bedtime and drift off to sleep, as if to lullabies... ~ ahhhhh... ~ :)

Re: Elliott's voice - others' as nice? (for those who like his voice)
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 6:48 AMOn "Twighlight," Elliott's voice sounds to me like a violin. It resonates through every song, though, carrying a hushed, delicate, fragile passion.
As far as other voices that carry some weight:
John Lennon - On "Real Love" from the new Acoustic CD, you can almost hear Elliott being influenced.
Jeff Tweedy from Wilco has a wonderful voice.
The aforementioned Jeff Buckley's voice soars.
There's this lady named Myshkin who moved to Portland a couple of years ago from my neck of the woods. Great, especially live. www.myshkinsrubywarblers.com -

Re: Elliott's voice - others' as nice? (for those who like his voice)
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 8:59 AMhmmmmmmmmmmmm i probably should think on this and come back... and I might do....
but right out of the gate, I'd have to say Ray Davies of the Kinks is right up there... he actually has that sort of hushed, sweet quality you speak of, but with perhaps a hint of acid Elliott doesn't have (if you've only heard the early hits, You Really Got Me, etc, you will have NO clue what I am talking about... but if you've heard their best work, the albums from 1966-1971, you'll know exactly what I mean)
Anyway, listen to "Waterloo Sunset" or "Days" or "The Village Green Preservation Society" and you'll see what I mean.
and for that matter, his brother, Dave Davies, he didn't often get the opportunity to sing lead for the band, but one song in particular where he did is "strangers" on the Lola vs Powerman and the Money-go-round" album....
the song is called "Strangers", and his nasal, plaintive, high-pitched, yelpy whelp gives me shivers every time... his singing on "Death of a Clown" has a similar effect, as does "Susanna's Still Alive".... his voice is certainly not classicaly beautiful, but it is emotionally affecting
and I agree about John Lennon, his cover of Roxy Music's "Jealous Guy", or his own song "Imagine" amazing....
and, yes, for sure Elliott loved the Beatles... they are clearly his number one influence, head and shoulders above any other influence he may have had... if you took out the vocals and just listened to the music on some of the songs, you'd swear it WAS the Beatles!! I'm speaking mostly of his music, not so much so his lyrics... though lyrically, he was closer to John, then to Paul, I'd say... and musically, exactly the opposite

Re: Elliott's voice - others' as nice? (for those who like his voice)
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 9:15 AMlol how could i go on and on about the kinks and not mention the connection between them and elliott?
though he was clearly most influenced by the beatles, the kinks weighed in heavily as well... again, i'm not speaking of their early guitar-shredding days (which are excellent in their own way) but of their "prime" period - 66-71.
I have a bootleg of an elliott performance where he does a Kinks "mini-set" 5 kinks songs in a row... and he OFTEN included a cover of waterloo sunset in his sets...
hehehehehehehe see elliott is my fave solo performer and the kinks are my fave band... so don't get me started!!
Ray Davies stands along with Elliott as one of the great songwriters of all time...

Re: Elliott's voice - others' as nice? (for those who like his voice)
Sat, January 1, 2005 - 10:27 AMWell, thanks alls for your input. I will have to investigate some of those leads - esp. that "best of" Kinks period.
Additional discussion on the topic is still welcome (and prob. would be even more good readin'...)
