Lowe's, Home Depot, or none of the above?

I'm often frustrated with the selection and the quality of help at big box hardware and builder's supply places. When I can, I go to an old fashioned hardware and supply place that I know. It's great - the old timers there give the appearance of just hanging around, but they can be really helpful and they know their stuff. Also, the store stocks (semi-obsolete) things that you just won't easily find at a big box store. The problem is that this temple of hardware is about a 3 hour drive away from my house so it is not at all practical to really use. Finally, for a DIYer like myself it just makes me peevish to walk away from a conversation with a nitwit at one of of those big stores who tries to hide his nitwittishness by acting scornful and contemptuous. In the past, I've wasted more than one conversation with one of these guys before figuring out that the person who really doesn't know what he's talking about is the guy who is supposed to be helping me.

So, does anybody have any preferences for one big box place over another? If you aren't lucky enough to have a real store in your town, have you found a way to steer some of your business away from the big boxes? Do you have a "test" for identifying a good hardware guy?

My choice is Lowe's. Many factors influence that decision.

It's closer to me, a tad cheaper than Home Depot, and less politically active than Home Despot. I try to vote with my dollars and always check up on a company's politics, if I can.

Unfortunately, all the local hardware stores around here are owned by people who's political compass points as far away from my own as one gets, and its hard to give them money, even in my desire to support local biz.

As far as service... I have had better experiences at Lowe's than I did at Home Depot before I had the Lowe's option, but that may be because I felt that I was forced to go to HD to do some of the projects I needed to do when they were the only big box game in town.

      I like Lowe's.

One time, this guy came up to me at Home Depot and started asking me what I was looking for.. i was so amazed.. someone helping me at Home Depot! But when he gave me a half-ass answer to my questions, he went on to try and sell me a Home Depot credit card! arggg! that was the worst thing ever. The only help I ever got at Home Depot was them trying to sell me their credit card.

      Lowe's!

I have worked for Lowe's in the recent past and I'll tell you that their primary cooncern is customer service. If you are willing to follow a few common sense guidelines, you will receive good to great service at Lowe's.

      1. if you really want personal attention go in at non-peak hours
      2. don't bother people useing equipment
      3. never, ever be on your cell phone while interacting with an associate
      4. please remember that the guy or girl in the red vest has heard it all
      5. the store manager is pretty much the final say person. store managers will do all he or she can for a reasonable customer.
      6. have good measurements, not a guess

As for politics, Lowe's does offer domestic partner benefits.

        Osh.

They actually have people who will help you find products! And out here in California, they are almost as big as home depot or Lowes (they are usually just missing the lumber and building materials sections)...

        Other than them, Lowe's.

But then again, if I'm gonna be buying some 12' lumber that's going to be sticking out of my window as I drive home, I'll take that 3 minute drive from HD, over the 45 minute drive from Lowe's or Osh any day.
