Making dark ceilings lighter?

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for how to make a dark beam ceiling lighter without making it look cheap? The entire house has these beams which I think give it a cozy, almost cavelike feel, but are making it very difficult to find a buyer.

    depends on if it is the natural color of the wood or are they painted/stained?

    You could sand and use a light colored stain or paint. Light colored stain and or natural wood tones give a much nicer earthier feel to a room.
