Press release: Whittingham Breaks World Record by Pedaling to 82 MPH
Battle Mountain, Nevada—On Thursday, September 18, Sam Whittingham of Quadra Island, BC, smashed his previous human powered vehicle world-record by pedaling his homebuilt, recumbent speed bicycle to 82 miles per hour, or 132 KPH, on flat ground.
In so doing, the 36 year old owner of Naked Bicycles and Design, and resident of Quadra Island captured, after over fifteen years of toil and training, the coveted $25,000 Decimach Prize, a longstanding reward for the first human being to go 0.10 mach, or one-tenth the speed of sound, under their own power.
Thank you to everyone who made this seemingly impossible feat possible.

Recumbents are built for speed especially the high-end Titanium and carbon fiber "long wheelbase rocket types" with enclosed nylon "windsocks" around the rider.
Even on my Sun EZ-1 SX wich is an entry-level 37 lb long wheelbase 24 speed Bent I have done 64mph on the downhills. and the bike only has a 16 inch front wheel and a 20 inch rear wheel, with a 700cc rear wheel,I'd be doing 70-75 mph becuase the larger wheel's rotation would be greater travel per rotation of the 52 tooth crank.
Regardless of what all the "roadie purist's" will say about "those damn stupid bents"(recumbent bikes) they ARE in fact superior to any upright standard style Road Race Bike.
This is why they are banned from Racing and also why the World Landspeed record for human powered transportation is broken every single year by an athlete on a Recumbent rocket. NO "racing bike",even the LIGHTEST and Fastest of them has ever even come close.
